No Man's Sky

I'm still going to wait and see what the word is, but if I had to go off that trailer alone I'd say: It looks like the coolest thing ever.

I'm still on the fence about this, but that trailer has nudged me in the right direction. ;)

No Man’s Sky possibly delayed (again) on the PC

July 25, 2016 28 Comments

The last time No Man’s Sky announced a launch delay, it caused no end of a ruckus on the internet from disgruntled fans. Now the playerbase’s patience will be tested once again, as the August release date is being adjusted.

The good news is that PlayStation 4 owners will be able to access and enjoy No Man’s Sky on the same date of August 9th in the US and the 10th in the EU. The bad news is that the PC version, which originally was going to launch simultaneously with the PS4, won’t come out until August 12th.

There seems to be a little confusion over the change of dates, as no formal announcement has been made over it. Rather, players have noticed that the official website quietly made the date change for the game’s PC version. It’s also interesting to note that platforms such as Steam still show No Man’s Sky unlocking on August 9th.

No Man’s Sky will operate free of PlayStation Plus

One of the downsides to getting into online games on consoles is that you have to worry about whether or not the titles will require a premium membership to access. Happily, No Man’s Sky console fans won’t be needing a PlayStation Plus subscription to enjoy this buy-to-play title when it releases next month.

“PS Plus won’t be a requirement to play online, however you will need to connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas,” a PlayStation representative told Game Informer.

As the article notes, players won’t be bumping into each other very much in the game, interacting mostly by leaving and reading atlas entries of their discoveries.

Perfect. Now I can remain without reason to purchase a subscription.

That trailer did nothing for me. Luckily I already own the game but I just hate the ads.

People are playing this game and well... well it is what it is apparently. Someone already got to the center of the galaxy in 30 hours.

Didn't we always know it would take around that long if the player went pretty much straight there, how long it took to get there never seemed to be the main point to me.

Yeah, I’ve been reading some of that **** storm on reddit.

The player in question was basically playing a speed run of the game; his sole intent was to get to the center as fast as he possibly could. For a game about exploration; seeing as much (or as little) of the galaxy as you want, a 30 hour speed run is a non issue.

This happens whenever an early copy gets out in the wild: people freak out over bugs that will be fixed in the inevitable Day One patch and people freak out over the play time, completely ignoring the fact that the early player is typically finishing the game as fast as possible and missing out on a lot of what the game has to offer.

I’ll take the complaints with a grain of salt and see for myself.

This does mean that I now have to actively avoid looking up the game now though, because spoilers about the center are about to be all over the place.

I am reading that as well. Doesn't sound like a speed run. There are glitches and errors that need to be fixed which have effected the progress, but the player is "exploring". He emphasized stopping going forward to simply see what the game had to offer. That doesn't sound like a speed run to me.

He also pointed out one of the basic problems with not heading straight for the center. The gear in the game gets better as you get closer to the center. So the game incentivizes you to progress forward as quick as possible. Otherwise you are wasting time collecting resources that are much easier to get the more you progress.

So after seeing the latest Star Trek I decided I really want to explore ****ing space so I pre-ordered ****ing No Man's Sky so I can fly my own ****ing space ship. The hype train ran my ass over.

I mean, is 30 hours...bad? That seems like a pretty solid experience to me. Unless people really bought into the whole, 'it's so infinite, it's beyond infinite, and everything is infinite forever' bit they were trying to sell.

It's not like the center has to be viewed as the end of the game either, there's still no shortage of places to go after you get there.

If we’re talking about the same guy…he has said that he skipped a ton of content; he was only doing the bare minimum exploration (ie: visiting as few planets as possible and spending as little time as possible on each planet); he only did a little bit of trading; didn’t do any of the NPC stuff (learning languages to communicate, battles etc), skipped any pirate and other division activity, and as you said, used the overpowered item to fast track it to the center. Yes, in this instance, I would call this a speed run.

He also pointed out one of the basic problems with not heading straight for the center. The gear in the game gets better as you get closer to the center. So the game incentivizes you to progress forward as quick as possible. Otherwise you are wasting time collecting resources that are much easier to get the more you progress.

Every game is like this, though. RPGs wil give you better gear and stats as you progress through the quests and/or enter new areas. It’s your choice to hang around lower level sections and do side quests, or skip all that and progress to get better gear. That’s not a design flaw; that’s giving the players a choice like every other open world game. And there’s nothing stopping you from getting better gear and back tracking to explore more if you want.

We also need to keep in mind he's playing the (technically) broken, pre-Day One patch version of the game, and as Hello Games has said, the Day One patch adds a lot of fixes, tweaks, and new content not on disc. All things considered, I'd say this guy's experience with the game needs to be taken with a big grain of salt. We'll find out what's up in a few days :)

still on the fence about this.

gonna wait for the reviews to start coming in and see if there's a general consensus.

it certainly looks promising.

All I know is, I have the game preordered, paid off, and I will be a happy camper on Tuesday.

No game is entirely what you anticipated during it's production. I've never felt hugely let down or lied to about a game once I had it in my hands.

Thing is, a game this unique, and ambitious, needs to be supported. (well, I mean, if you dig it) Variety is getting harder to come by these days, especially with so many gamers dismissing the indie market, where a lot of the innovation can actually afford to be.

I'd love to see the effect this game could have if it ends up being a success, whatever the game itself ends up being, the idea of it is something that I'd love to see taken to its limit.

A lot of games never really turn out to be what they are hyped or promised to be. However, sometimes, things get discovered coming out of those games that the developers didn't expect that can turn out to be pretty cool. Or pretty condemning.
