No Man's Sky

So I want to buy this game, but I'm hearing the PC port is a mess.
That is the talk. However if you are curious about whether you an run it, you could buy it off steam and play it for 2 hours. If it doesn't work, you can get your money back if you return it before eclipsing two hours of play.

Any one else (PS4) having issues with the day/night cycle?

I started the game while the Day One patch was downloading, I had a day and night cycle on my first planet. I played for a little bit, installed the patch later and played again.

Since then, I have not seen night again, at all.

I know I am not the only one from perusing GameFaqs and reddit, but there isn't a whole lot of info on it at the moment. Somebody mentioned the same thing, (started playing before patch was installed) and he had to delete his first save, starting a new file post-patch seemed to fix it.

I'm hoping I don't have to do that, and that it might be addressed in that upcoming patch?
I've stayed on planets for hours to test it out and night never comes. I've tried flying around to the dark side of planets and still bright as day when I land.

I may start a new game on a different profile to make sure.

lol minecraft has some decent depth though. you can't actually craft buildings in this game, just items. i guess its rumored you can build a base later on but if you cant return to a visited planet i dont see the point in building an elaborate base just to leave it.

im hoping we can eventually build our own ship though or a freighter and be able to walk around within the ship. Have storage within the ship, etc.

Hello Games has said that Freighters and Bases are coming in a future update.

Wait, you can't return to planets you've already visited?

You can, but it becomes very easy to lose track of your course through the universe, since the game unfortunately doesn't keep track of the route you've taken. Hopefully they add that in an update.

There's a lot of things that would be nice in the game bit at the same time aren't exactly necessary for the way it functions now. You aren't supposed to be stockpiling stuff and settling, keep moving forward. Or left or right.

Have you guys noticed the different colored stars? Requires upgraded warp drives and apparently hold more elusive items.

It's an artsy game for art's sake.

That's odd! I would have expected some sort of reference map. Or maybe not a map, but perhaps a list of the places you've visited and like, the ability to click one and have an arrow point you in the direction. Maybe with a distance meter to your selected target.

I hope Hello Games continues to add new features (for free!) as it sounds like there's a lot of relatively basic features it could do with. Sometimes it might just be things players want, or cool ideas Hello just didn't think of. In the case of some kind of reference tool though, that feels like an oversight.

This is pretty much how the map works right now, in terms of selecting a star and seeing the distance to it. Starting the game, you have three options when you open the Galaxy map:

1) The Atlas Path. This shows the direct (more or less) path to the Center. The path only shows you the way forward from your current location.

2) Free Exploration. No paths. Just pic a star close enough to you and go.

3) Way Point. This gives a you custom path to a system of your choosing. You could in theory set your way point at your first planet, and use this to be able to retrace your steps later on. Though this would likely get overwritten if you chose a destination outside of your main (Atlas) path.

There are a few more options in the Galaxy Map, but they're locked out until (I assume) you reach the Center. There is also a screen that lists all the systems, planets and other things you've discovered, for you to rename and upload, but it unfortunately it not connected to the map.

Hearing some pretty bad things about this game, especially if it is a full priced game.

Perhaps it is a good thing it is not on Xbone or I would have got it when released.

On the surface it seemed like it might be something to help me get through nights while working (work from home and it is very slow).

It's minecraft in space with a bit of a choose your own adventure element. If you go into it knowing that is what you're getting, you will have fun. If you're looking for more than that, get Elite: Dangerous.

I've been having fun with the game overall, but have also been fighting boredom with it. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up how the game ends to see if it was worth continuing. I'm glad I did:

1) Atlas Path Ending: Once you reach the final Atlas station, you are given the opportunity to create a planet. That's it. You don't visit the planet; there are no other rewards. And you can only create this planet if you still have all the Atlas shards, so if you've sold any of them, you're screwed.

2) Center of the Galaxy: There's no special area; no new items; not even a cinematic. Reaching the center simply transports you to the edge of a new galaxy where all of your items and ship are broken again; it literally just starts the game over.

So my desire to "beat" the game is pretty much dead. It looks like No Man's Sky has become a "I have nothing else to play or do, so I guess I'll pop in for a little bit" type of game. It's a shame.

I bought it knowing there is no clear goal or path, or narrative, and with the intention of playing it occasionally, not constantly. It never seemed a game to binge on.

That being said, I didn't play it for about 3 or four days after playing hours every day during launch week. I waited for the new patches, and played yesterday for a bit. Started a new save file which took care of some of my glitches but has made me enthusiasm wane a bit.

Still, I think it's fun, I think there's a lot to still see, I think the game can only improve and that it will surely do so over time.

Hopefully the first real update comes soon, would be nice to get an indication of how we can expect the updates to alter the game.

That seems to be what I've noticed. I haven't played it yet, I traded systems with my brother and he's been playing it regularly since it came out. I wasn't really following the press stuff, but he seemed to know what he was getting, ie: no real narrative, or no storytelling, etc. Just flying around and exploring, and that seems like enough of a hook for him because he hasn't gotten bored yet.

I'd be interested to see what this game looks like a year from now, with a couple of updates and maybe even paid DLC? I have no reason to think it'll become something crazy, not some neo-Mass Effect or anything. But, just adding more stuff, which seems to be the common complaint, could all go a long way for most.

Do you actually discover anything in this game? Are you ever actually the first person to find a planet? I have seen videos about the game and there are already robots on the planets. Also there are spaceships floating near the planets.

You are pretty much always the first player to discover a planet. However, each solar system has a space station for trading, and each planet has a series of small outposts (usually abandoned). The spaceships you see in videos are NPCs.

The game needs more of they promised which can be done with DLC, it just sucks that so much that came out of Murrays mouth is not in the game.

What about pirates and factions fighting for territorial control?

The Jimquisition released today nailed the hype for this game and how the studio fed it, falsely.
