The Dark Knight Nolan more excited about Hoffman than Penguin

Spotted this at C2F. From a Christopher Nolan interview with Esquire.

ESQ: The Internet thinks you're casting Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.

CN: [Laughs.] Not true. I'd be more excited to have Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film than to have the Penguin. There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. The Penguin would be tricky.

Yup if its so that Penguin is not in the movie then that means a lot of those rumors probably aren't true either. Or are they? I'm confused.

It's bizarre, because we got a "Penguin confirmed" Plus, Hoffman is/would be a great penguin, so you could have both. Also, Penguin, to me, seems like one of the easier villains to do

Ok, there can be 2 varients of what Nolan is trying to say:

A) There is no Penguin in TDK and all those rumors weren't true.

B) There is Penguin in it, but Hoffman won't be Nolan's choice.

C) Nolan hasn't decided yet.

We already know that Joker is the main villain, and Harvey Dent has some screen time, so a Penguin appearance would serve as little more than a cameo at best.

Either way, BOF drops the ball again.

You know, I don't hate the guy for creating and running a Batman site, but his tips are usually posted on other websites first, and I don't like the fact that he posts rumors about rumors. Still, he's a fellow bat fan, so hear! hear! for that. . . sort of.

Agreed, but the minute amount of screen time may contribute to why we don't see another major villain, or a recognizable name in the role.

Still, when Nolan and Goyer had finished the treatment, I remember Goyer commenting about multiple villains in the second film. I don't know if the story has changed that much since the second stage or actual writing, but I'm interested to see how this plays out.

All of you insisting that Nolan's f**king with us are reaching. He's never really given us a reason to question this clear-cut answer. He'd either confirm/deny, or playfully avoid the situation. In this case, he gave us the former.

It's never been more than rumor that Penguin was in the movie, and one I had my doubts about. And I also don't buy that guy in Arkham is the Penguin either.
