If You Want To Play A Female Character In The Legend of Zelda, Let Nintendo Know. June 12, 2014 . 4:00am

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma shared some brief thoughts on the trailer that Nintendo showed off for The Legend of Zelda on Wii U.

Speaking with Game Informer at E3, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma shared some brief thoughts on the trailer that Nintendo showed off for The Legend of Zelda on Wii U. Aonuma says that he’s been hearing people say that they think Link is a lady now.

“That might be something that consciously we kind of did, but not to say anything specific—I am not saying anything specific—but, I am hoping people continue to comment, and I will continue to follow the fan comments and reactions to the trailer,” Aonuma said.

“I am certainly curious, and I am sure there are things we as developers can glean.”

Meanwhile, speaking with MMGN, Aonuma clarified that his earlier comment about the character in the trailer not being Link was more of a joke.

“Actually that comment I made jokingly,” he said. “It’s not that I said that it wasn’t Link. It’s that I never said that it was Link. It’s not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way.”

Aonuma also stated that he doesn’t want people to focus too much on Link’s appearance in the game.

“I don’t want people to get hung up on the way Link looks because ultimately Link represents the player in the game,” he said. “I don’t want to define him so much that it becomes limiting to the players. I want players to focus on other parts of the trailer and not specifically on the character because the character Link represents, again, the player.”

Of late, Nintendo have been making a very conscious effort to include more playable female characters in their games. Since Nintendo have always maintained that Link is supposed to be an avatar for the player, including a female variant would make sense, and judging by Aonuma’s comments, he’s open to the idea.

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U is planned for release in 2015.

may be they might do what happened in mass effect where you make the protagonist any sex you want to be. it'll be weird calling link Linka ( hmm had a captain planet vibe there)

You know I was thinking about this talk about the main character and I realized, that if they were to make the main character someone other then Link, they'd be completely contradicting Skyward Sword, which sent up the entire continuity of the Zelda series. Link, Zelda and Ganon all have very specific places. They are literal reincarnations of original Link (his spirit), Hylia and Demise.

Also Eiji Aonuma confirmed he was just messing, feeding the ridiculous talk.

UPDATE 12pm: Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has now cleared up any doubt about the identity of the protagonist, insisting the trailer does show Link.

"It's a rumour," he told MMGN. "Actually that comment I made jokingly. It's not that I said that it wasn't Link. It's that I never said that it was Link. It's not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way.

"It seems like it has kind of taken off where people are saying 'oh it's a female character' and it just kind of grew. But my intent in saying that was humour. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement."

so when's the next event you'd reckon they'd show more of this?

I hope we don't have to wait until E3 next year before we see it again.

they haven't said yet. they usually do announcement though and it's sent to most gamer new& reviews sites, so you'll know when they do that .

I'd say TGS. It isn't that far off, but enough for there to be real progression.

ah, thanks.

I'm really eager to see more of this. especially now that they've teased us so..........lol.

also, when this does come out, I'd imagine there will be a bundle. but do you think they will also release a Wii U with more internal storage ( 64gb or higher )?

I'm also willing to bet they will have a Zelda themed Nintendo Direct just before Hyrule Warriors releases.

so is Nintendo Direct like their own convention/event or something??

( sorry, I haven't been following Nintendo for a long time now......lol )

Zelda Producer On Majora’s Mask Remake: “I’m Doing Everything I Can”. June 12, 2014 . 4:33pm

A lot of people were almost certain that Nintendo would announce a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask for the Nintendo 3DS at E3 this year

A lot of people were almost certain that Nintendo would announce a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask for the Nintendo 3DS at E3 this year, but unfortunately, no such announcement was made at the show.

Kotaku caught up with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma at E3 to ask what was going on on that front, and Aonuma replied that he knows fans would like to see a remake.

“I do know that fans want to see Majora’s Mask. I’ve heard that voice, it’s very, very strong, and I’m always listening, is what I would say,” Aonuma said.

Kotaku then asked about the presence of Majora’s Mask in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which was something Aonuma himself asked fans to look out for.

“Maybe I was toying with them a little,” Aonuma said, causing laughter. “I’m doing everything I can. I hear the voices of the fans. There are so many out there. It’s very loud, and just to acknowledge the fact that the need, the want is out there, I put that in there.”

Something to keep in mind is that Nintendo have not likely announced all of their games at E3 this year. Some titles that we know are in development were obviously absent, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a remake of Majora’s Mask announced via a Nintendo Direct at some point later this year.

It was just hard to distinguish him from that trailer, especially after what Aonuma said.I've never once in the past thought he looked like a female. Not once.
But here, he looks a little more feminine. Maybe it's the less roundish face and thinner body? It reminded me more of Zelda than Link.

You aren't alone in thinking this apparently, but as I said, I really don't get it. There's nothing more feminine in that trailer about Link than any Zelda game in recent years. It's weird to me that just now people seem to realizing that. It's like I said, it's like all the hate MGSV is getting for oversexualization of a character, and it's like...have you never played a MGS? Even people who have played them regularly were getting on board that.

Just curious, did you actually think Link was a girl the first time you saw it? Or did you start thinking when you read the stuff about Aonuma being coy about whether it was Link or a guy?

I know. I was responding to the previous post

I know you were replying to someone, but does that matter? What were you trying to say then?

my initial reaction when Link uncloaked and you saw the back was "A girl? Zelda?"

maybe it was more due to the ponytail/hairstyle than anything else.

That I wanted a new Zelda game more than a remake of majoras mask

Right, and we...just got one? So, I guess you got your wish, unless you want to actively deprive people of wanting a MM remake?

What the?

No, I'm not actively depriving people of anything. I don't work for nintendo. I just would want a new legend of Zelda game instead of remakes.

I imagine we are going to get some sort of Zelda only Nintendo Direct either in August or September in honor of Hyrule Warriors. If there is a Majora's Mask remake in the works, it will probably be announced then.

On a side note, E3 really sold me on Hyrule Warriors.
