YOu would think Lowell would be there backup plan

Considering how Lowell performed during the season and the post-season, along with his clubhouse presence, I think he is their #1 priority.

I think they got the fans' message after the world series.

The sox have some flexibility with Youk being able to shift to third. It's easier to find a good hitting 1B than a good hitting 3B. That's probably what their backup plan is.

I am not saying they are going to land A-Rod, but they are covering all their bases per usual.

Mike Lowell has been offered a 3 Year Deal by the Red Sox; between 12 Million - 15 Million Per.

Does that include a 4th year option??? I could see him snatching that up if they included a 4th year option.

I think he will take it if he really wants to stay in Boston. Also, Epstein met/spoke with Boras yesterday or the day before about A-Rod.

I read they met more about 'Tek and other Boras guys on the team and Boras just threw some A-Rod talk in there to see if Theo would bite. Epstein isn't so stupid as to give that greedy SOB a chance, not when we already could have Lowell much cheaper, and have some guys from the minors who will be able to take over for Mike in a few years.

Tek? His contract has at least another year on it?

I believe after seeing the full extent of Tek's value (no playoffs w/o him in '06 and winning the WS with him in '07...you make the call...especially with Becketts 180-change from last season), Theo was trying to get a jump on negotiations so they don't give us all a heart attack later.

i don't think they'll try to re-sign him after this contract expires. he'll be 37 by then and he's already going downhill. they might give him a one year deal at a greatly reduced price, but anything more than that would be unwise. they need to start looking for his replacement. sure, he's a great guy and the captain and all that, but you can't be sentimental when trying to build a winning team.

I agree he's going down offensively, but behind the plate and ini game prep...hes still tops. I dunno. I'd say he has at least 3-4 good years left (at least defensively) but maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

I think executives could give less of a damn about A-Rod's personality, and more about the financial commitment. Getting the best offensive player in the game today is what you want if you're a GM. I don't give a damn about his postseason stats,(a small sample size of a single series doesn't reflect your overall value, and it's stupid as hell to judge a players worth over a span of less than 20 at-bats) he played on Yankee teams that had some pretty ineffective pitching in the postseason the last few years. A-Rod might be selfish and wants all the money he can get, but wouldn't you want the max amount of money if you're the best player in the game and also has the best agent while doing so? I mean it was lame as hell to announce his Opting out, and I don't condone that. But he's rich as ****, why should he give a damn?

The Phillies, continuing to fortify their pitching staff, have re-signed free-agent left-hander J.C. Romero to a three-year, $12 million contract, according to major-league sources.

The deal includes a club option for a fourth year that could bring the total value of the deal to $16.75 million.
Romero would continue in the role he filled after joining the Phillies last season, joining right-handers Ryan Madson and Tom Gordon and newly acquired closer Brad Lidge in the late innings.

The contract caps a big turnaround for Romero, whom the Phillies claimed off waivers in June.

Romero is 28-24 with a 4.64 ERA in nine seasons. He played for Minnesota from 1999-2005 and had his best season in 2002 when he went 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA, helping to guide the Twins to the American League Championship Series. He has also played for the Angels and Red Sox.

Tigers are asking about Dontrelle Willis. I think the Marlins goal at this point is to trade Miguel Cabrera and keep Dontrelle.

Kenny Rogers and Detroit have parted ways according to the Detroit Free Press. This leaves open the door for Dontrelle to come in. This is all going to depend on if Detroit has anything good to offer to Florida.

Detroit may also sign back Todd Jones.

Is this really the best thing the Fish can to do at this point? the D-train has been pretty average the last few seasons despite the pitcher favored parks he plays in most of the time.

Dontrelle hasn't been on for a while....

Hasn't he been rumored for deals with the Mets the last few seasons as well? I believe it was last year when there was a discussed deal to send him to NYM for David Wright, but Minaya probably laughed at Jeffery Loria when he saw that proposal.

yeah...every off season or trade deadline its him heading to the Yanks, Mets, Tigers...etc. The Marlins never go through. I agree about Minaya, no way he would take that. As for him going to the Tigers...the report I read stated that it probably won't happen since the Tigers traded Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez

Yeah, the Tigers have had Dontrelle on their radar for the last couple of season. His stock has fallen though after a couple of mediocre seasons. The Marlins should have traded him back in 2005 for some good prospects. The only reason they didn't was because they were having a decent season. He should stay put this winter, however, I have been hearing that if Miguel Cabrera is dealt to Anaheim or Los Angeles, he could go as well as apart of a blockbuster trade.

Houston has also asked about Dontrelle but probably don't have anybody good to give back.

I think the Marlins should adopt AL rules, move Cabrera to 1st and have Mike Jacobs DH.At this point, it seems likely that's the only way they could keep him. In addition they could sign a random guy to play 3rd like some current free agents such as: Chris Woodward, Jeff Cirillo, A-Rod, Abraham Nunez, Mike Lamb, Corey Koskie, Chris Gomez, Pedro Feliz, or Russel Branyan:o

That Wright for Willis sounds older than a year ago, maybe 05-06. I know the Marlins asked for Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez, Mike Pelfrey, and Philip Humber for Willis last year. Those are the Mets Top 2 OF and pitching prospects.

Willis is a mechanical mess now. They tried to change his delivery to increase his longevity (his original required so much flexibility).

Just saw the deal Romero signed. HORRIBLE signing. Not surprising considering Pat Gilick is the GM.

ridiculous signing. how did this guy suddenly merit a three year deal with an option? man the phillies are gonna be regretting that one come june when his era is sitting upwords of 7...
