Official Batman Titles thread 2.0 - - - - - - - Part 16

Yeah and I'm mad that I have to read about it in Batgirl. I just hope it doesn't contaminate Detective Comics too.

Following the events of “Endgame,” get ready to ride with the GCPD in a whole new city! Harvey Bullock is leading a Bat task force, but what are his duties, and can he be trusted? And what kind of welcome awaits his new partner, Renee Montoya?

With Superman and Wonder Woman also getting new costumes and bold new story directions, I'm thinking this is probably part of a general thing they're trying at DC.

Oh well it looks like I'll be saving myself some money then.

With Superman and Wonder Woman also getting new costumes and bold new story directions, I'm thinking this is probably part of a general thing they're trying at DC.

They've been saying that for quite some time now and people still haven't been paying attention. They're allowing more creative freedom from the writers and artists as of June across their entire comic book line. It's not just limited to "niche" characters and new books. It's a mandate that applies to the titles of the big 7 as well.

I will be buying 2 copies :woot:

Ya know, Gordon taking over for Batman for a bit isn't actually half bad of an idea. But that big blue rabbit-eared suit is ugly as ****.

I kind of like the Idea of Gordon taking over for Bruce as long as it's done in a semi plausible way i could deal with it.

I could Imagine after the event of endgame Bruce leaves gotham to regain his sanity and purpose and Leaves Jim a High powered proto type Bat Suit Lucious Fox Designed.. I could see it. Jim's already a good detective and can hold his own in a fight...

I am actually now kind of hoping that is who is in the suit as that would Make sense be something different (Jim never was Batman as far as I can tell) and with his rising stardom on Gotham it kind of makes sense.

The art for the cover to Detective Comics #41 looks pretty sweet and I can even appreciate the Bat armour's aesthetics for being its own thing, but it's too daft of a concept for me to enjoy it as Batman's costume.

As I said in another thread, the Robo-Tick suit looks stupid because it's almost certainly intended to look stupid (the same way Jean Paul Valley's batcostume was a 90s pastiche). It's got police lights on it, guys. You're obviously not supposed to take it seriously.

It's a cover (more correctly, a few covers, but you get my meaning). If I don't know what the content is, I don't see the sense in getting worked up about it. It's like the guys who swore never to read Superior Spider-Man because the premise "ruined Spider-Man." All they accomplished was to deprive themselves of some incredible comics, and an amazing story that any comics reader should know was only going to be temporary anyway.

I'm going to give it a chance, and if it's stupid, oh well--I can just stop buying it. If this had Bruce Wayne on the cover in the classic costume it would be just as likely to be stupid, and I'd buy it and find out. So what's the difference? I don't see this as being any different from any other month out of the year: a comics publisher claims this issue's going to change everything, then I buy it and find out if it's worth buying again. Business as usual. I don't get all the hooplah.

I'm also reminded of poor old Jett from Batman on Film, who stoped buying Batman comics completely during Dick Grayson's tenure as Batman. I can't imagine having missed out on those comics; they outstrip every Batman story in the New 52 so far.

Meanwhile: T-shirt and jeans Superman? My body is ready.

Just thought I'd go ahead and make my usual complaint about any new Bat-line reveal:

WHERE'S MY FRICKIN' RED ROBIN BOOK?!?!

Seriously, I want to see some book handled by the Bat staff focusing on Tim. Teen Titans has done jack for the character; he's only there to help prop up sales after the mess Lobdell made of the YJ4. And now we've got Steph back as well, with Harper as her suspiciously similar substitute, and honestly, I want to actually see an old school Dixon-style book in the new line-up, one that builds a world around multiple young sidekicks and heavily features their civilian lives.

And if he or they happen to show up in We Are Robin, that'll be fine. I just want them away from a book where he'll be confined to the shadow of New Teen Titans. Because that's what his position is on the Titans, and what it has been ever since they pushed him over there.

I actually tend to forget Tim still exists--because I won't read Scott Lobdell's schlock, and he has virtually no presence anywhere else in the line. You Tim fans got screwed almost as badly as us Wally fans.

Nah, Wally fans got screwed worse. Most of the Bat guys who write Tim ignore the ways Lobdell wrote the character, and really, if the right creator were given control of the character right now, he's need maybe half an issue to completely supplant Lobdell's work on Tim. Wally would need someone in charge of Barry to give an okay to actually, y'know, writing Wally as someone awesome and on par with Barry. Tim has Jason, Damian, and Dick as the standards by which to judge the changes made to him, and since none of theirs are as drastic as his are, he'd just be joining the status quo instead of fighting an entrenched Silve Age regression.

It's mostly just really surprising that there isn't some kind of book already given carte blanche to run with Tim, Steph, and maybe Cass; the Convergence issues of Batgirl seem tailor made to tackle that theoretical demographic, though, so it may just be that they want to see how those 3 do in a short series before launching another.

But seriously, Tim's had vocal supporters, and Didio himself gauged the crowd at one of the cons on the idea of another Tim solo, unprompted. It just seems odd that Jason, Damian, and Babs all get a shot alongside Duke and hundreds of kids when Tim, and the Dixon-style, civilian-life focused world that was always a part of hsi books, are a proven successful formula alongside Dick Grayson solos.

Also, what Gordon "did" in Eternal, him in this new Batsuit may be [BLACKOUT]his redemption arc[/BLACKOUT]. Endgame happens after Eternal, and the first time we see Gordon in Endgame he was in his house (?) with boarded-up windows. So what's up with him post-Eternal? Are we assuming he is back in the police force?

Gordon as the new batman is really something I could see being amazing actually. I'm sure it will be fun. and in a few months, we know bruce will be back anyway.

I generally subscribe to that same belief system. By the same token if it is indeed a Jim Gordon Batman then yeah I'm saving my money. I never asked for that story to be told so why should I spend my bucks on a concept I have 0 interest in?

I actually tend to forget Tim still exists--because I won't read Scott Lobdell's schlock, and he has virtually no presence anywhere else in the line. You Tim fans got screwed almost as badly as us Wally fans.
Will Lobdell doesn't write Teen Titans anymore :cwink:

...and now it's the Manchester Black show!

Just exaggerating. But pretty much all the Titans books featuring the YJ4 have failed to live up to the chemistry I'd come to expect from PAD. Young Justice came out with three of its members in solos, and a writer with a mission statement of making beginner friendly comics. The Titans books since Johns's run have all been trying to recapture someone else's magic, whether it be NTT, X-Men, or the Elite. And the thing is that all four of the Young Justice kids were constructed to be standalone heroes with their own casts who were buddies and hung out together; their current format is naturally weaker than their prime.

So with all this talk of Gordon as the new Batman, what's happened to Bruce? If Justice League runs concurrent to batman titles, Bruce-Bat is still present, as least on the JL covers for 41-42 (as well as a non-t-shirt supes). That's always one of the things I get confused on, the chronology in relation between titles.

From what I gather, JL is sort of doing it's own thing. It's canon, but it's not adhering so much to other continuity things that might be going on, it kind of exists within its own bubble until they decide to take it for some event, basically. That's how I understand it anyway.

I mean, the real answer is there is no such thing as chronology in comics so this kind of stuff is pointless to really worry about, but some people don't like that answer :o

We're doing a fifth annual poll for Top 75 Batman trades over at CBR, where it's used a resource for a good number of lurkers and readers, new and old. If you've read a crap ton of Batman books and feel like helping out, head on over and VOTE!

We'll find out next week after two damn months of waiting.

They already released an image of who it is. Or am I imagining this?
