Every casting thread gets strangely homoerotic at some point. :o

lol...I'm glad somebody finally came out and said it! It's perfectly reasonable to have discussions about an actor's physique when they're playing a superhero, but it is amusing how much male actors' musculature and physical appearance have come to dominate these threads. Of course, it's not hard to see why. Comic books are a visual medium, and given that you can't hear the characters in them speak, fans have little to go on other than appearance when it comes to translating their favourite heroes to the silver screen.

In some ways, I find the discussion of muscle mass and body type fascinating when it comes to male actors, because usually rating somebody by their physical appearance is what happens to actresses. Look in the casting threads for female characters and the discussion usually boils down to "she's smoking hot!" or "she's not attractive at all", with acting ability almost an afterthought. So it is refreshing to see male actors judged by their appearance, although you could argue this is a step backward in general terms.

There's another obvious reason why discussion of actors' physiques gets so much play - namely, that we little else to discuss! At this early stage in pre-production, we have approximately NOTHING to talk about in regards to the actual movie - no set pics, no footage, no costume images, nothing. However, we DO have pictures of the actors shirtless. So it becomes easy to talk about things like muscles and whether Chris Evans is sufficiently buff to play Captain America. Truthfully, I actually think my love of comic book superheroes is one of the main factors that motivates me to work out. That, and looking good naked.

As for the homoeroticism itself...well, that's a whole other story, and I don't think I'm fit to psychoanalyze all male members of the Hype. It really depends on what your views are of human sexuality in general: are straight people 100% straight, gay people 100% gay, or, as Alfred Kinsey argued, is there a wide spectrum of bisexuality with differing degrees of attraction to each sex? Beats the hell outta me. I will say that, as a straight male, I'm still comfortable enough with my sexuality to be able to appreciate a finely-chiseled male form, mainly because I admire the work it takes to get a body like that and it can serve as a model for my own pursuit of physical fitness. But when it comes to judging the bodies of female actresses...well, I think we can all agree, there are far better websites to go for THAT than SuperHeroHype. :woot:

Man... I hate that scene. It looked totally silly. It was almost like he was flying above the ground.
me too...that's the 2nd time bad effects tried to make Tim Roth look faster than he actually is. the first time was in Planet of the Apes when they drug a mat by vehicle while the apes ran across it. while it looked kinda cool, it still looked fake.

I don't think anyone ever had any doubts that Marvel was going to call the shots in casting Cap, he's one of the linchpins (along with Stark and Fury) that will tie their entire filmverse together. Johnston will have much more say in the supporting roles.
Wonder how different things would have been had Wolfman scored big?:o
Dorky Fresh just posted this in the manip section and is spot on with what I'd want.......

Wouldn't have such big pouches but otherwise...great work.
Don't know if this has been discussed (check back only 2 pages) but I found this bit of the interview for Losers very interesting

Comes off as a little hypocritical now that he's signed an even longer agreement to play Cap.:o
^ Translation: "I hated working with Tim Story, and I will never let him direct me again."

:funny:

Pretty much.

Evans knows that the quality of the first FF films wasn't up to the level where it should be or fans expected it to be.

BTW Evans has co-starred in 2 movies with the Scarlett Johansson aka Black Widow...

I interpret it more like he took a chance because he really liked the script / thought this was a great oportunity. I mean come on, who in their right mind would say no to this job? :)

That's true in a sense. But it's still a massive commitment.

Just saw Danny Boyle's "Sunshine", and it is, in my honest opinion, a superb film. I really loved it.

However, regarding its relevance to this topic and forum, it is a fantastic resume for Chris Evans. He portrays a level-headed, mission-oriented, strong-willed man who is also compassionate and understanding. If that's not Steve Rogers, I don't know what is.

I really think Evans can pull this off after watching this film.

I'm just glad more people are watching Sunshine as I found it to be a neat little film that made me become a fan of Chris Evans.

I mean I thought that he was aces in FF but Sunshine proved to me that he was a damn fine young actor.

Damn, somebody lend me Sunshine! :cmad:

^LOL

I saw it when it came out and watched it again a few weeks ago. It's no 28 Days Later but I dug it.

Yeah I watched it a couple days ago. It was superb and Evans sold me. Just him making the quick and selfless decision of Cappa going in the suit to get back to the Icarus II and him going into the freezing water to get the power back on was inspiring. I genuially felt for him and I believed in him. That's what we need for Cap.

 Exactly.

Him getting cast has made me look up more of his work. I just got Street Kings and I'm getting London too. I haven't read good things about these films but I'm only watching them for him anyway so the quality doesn't matter.

In a way I actually liked that this happened, Evans as Cap. It's like this big thing that has been lifted off my shoulders. Now I know, I won't have to see this. I won't have any expectations as I won't see the movie. It's a wonderful feeling. It's like suddenly super-hero movies are not important to me. I know what Marvel will do, that they won't be making the epic Cap movies I wanted to see. So instead of crossing my fingers and hope that they won't screw up, I know they will. Not just because of the casting but because they went ahead and hired a second-rate director in Johnston to direct and they want to include other "international heroes", making it all PC and don't make it too harsh as a WWII movie. So it's not the Captain America I would have wanted to see. And hiring Evans was sort of the spark in my brain that said "uh, right, that's what they're doing". I'm ok with that. What they're going for is not just for me. It won't be the Cap from the comics, but something more "Hollywood" and commercial. Sort of like what they did with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, etc...

I wish them good luck. But it's not my kind of thing.

Cool story bro.

Lol, what a drama queen. "Such a weight has been lifted from my shoulders now that the burden of seeing this movie is removed! Now that the crass commercialism of Hollywood no longer has a hold upon me I can finally move on with my life and accomplish something noble and good and important, like continuously returning to the same message board reminding people that Chris Evans sucks blah blah blah blah blah......."

It's like you reached into my head and pulled out all of my thoughts!:awesome:

Hmmm, not sure if this is the most enlightened post I've read here in a while. Allow me to explain.

If FOX were producing this film I could see your concern. But Marvel has clearly set a standard for themselves and have created some excellent, high quality films. What makes you think that they are gonna suddenly drop the ball with one of Marvel's flagship characters? Simply because Chris Evans is involved...and wait...because he was in the crappy Fox FF films? How much sense does that reasoning contain? You have two different studios with two completely different track records in film quality--and an actor that was arguably the BEST thing in the flawed studio's product--crossing over to the high quality production studio.

Well...in my humble opinion, there's not a lot of foresight in your post there man.
