FANTASTIC FOUR #551 – Well, for those of you who hate time-travel stories, read no further. Me, I love them.

This one has Dr. Doom breaking out of a prison and heading to the past with Sub-Mariner and Black Panther in tow. Remember Reed and Tony’s 100 Idea plan? Well, it turns out Reed had one more, #101, that he was keeping to himself (And that room that he was writing all his formulae on: it just looks creepy). Implementing it eventually turns the world into a craphole. It seems Reed creates Utopia, and everything was going swimmingly until Sue left him for Namor. (Note to self: if you ever go to the past to explain why it all went to hell is because someone’s wife left him for you, do not refer to her as your l-o-v-e-r.) So Reed, on the spot, devises a solution to the problem: he blows Namors head off and says "Problem Solved." (Tell me we all haven’t wanted to see that at one point or another.)

I like the story, but there will be some things to nitpick, I guess. For starters, I would like Idea#101 to be something more specific than End hunger,poverty, etc,etc. Also, shooting Namor after the affair won’t change anything in the future. I mean, he already boinked Future Sue, making Future Reed crazy. (Although, I’m sure next issue will reveal that it was a Doombot or something.)

OK, so I got my sub for the first installment of Brand New Day. So, before I get into the review:

Disclaimer: The one thing that always bothered me about the clone saga was all the complaining after they killed Ben. I never understood that. I could understand before, but after? And it still goes on, 10 years later. I never understood why people weren’t happy with actually getting their way. I mean, they killed the poor guy, what more could you ask for? That said, I always thought that they should do away with the marriage. But I, in no way, want people who don’t feel that way to feel like I’m rubbing salt in their wounds. That sucks. Anyway…

Amazing Spider-Man #546 –

So, we’re basically thrown in to Pete’s life as it is now. There are a few nods to recent continuity (Pete teaching, Superhero registration) and old friends (web-shooters, spider-tracers ) Pete is back living with Aunt May (who seems more to be trying to gently push him out), looking for a job, and borrowing money from Harry. Pete lets a mugger in a Spidey Mask get away with his wallet and web-shooters, because Carlie (from Harry’s Party last ish) puts herself between Pete and the mugger. While chasing him down, he bumps into Aunt May, and the mugger gets away. Aunt May is volunteering at a homeless shelter, and her boss thinks Pete is homeless, and May was working there to find him. Kind of a funny sequence. Pete goes off to the Bugle for money owed, and is told that someone is trying to buy out the Bugle and that no-one is getting paid. After a little screaming match, JJJ has a heart attack…

There’s also a sub-plot with a new villain called Mr. Negative who looks like, well, a negative. He get’s something stolen from the evidence locker that looks like it could be the……(I’m not being a jerk, I just forgot the name of it. The stone that turned Silvermane young. It might not be that, but looks sort of like it.)

There’s also three shorts, one of Jackpot that most of you saw the preview art to, one with Aunt May in the homeless shelter, and one of Harry Osborn meeting with his new girlfriend’s father, a politician whom Harry is donating money to.

Opinions: I liked it. It had more of the feel of a Spidey comic when I loved Spidey comics. It’s pretty much what I expected. I’m sure a lot of people will say it’s regressing the character, and to be perfectly honest, it does feel that way. Even to a supporter of it. I’m glad they decided on the three a month format, because it does feel like they need to move forward. Quickly.

Wolverine #61 -

So, it seems the reason that Wolverine's healing factor has been insane (aside from one-upmanship on the part of each successive writer), is that he beat the angel Azreal in combat during WWI. So, everytime he gets mortally wounded, he gets the chance to battle him again. If he wins, he gets to go back, even if he's only a drop of blood. This time he lost, because his Atlantean squeeze got killed, and he had no reason to live (she must have been a red-head). Since it's already late, and this is too complicated, I'll skip some and say that Azreal returned the piece of "soul" that Wolvie was missing in return for him killing Phaedra. But the next time he's "mortally wounded", it's for keeps (we'll see), and his healing factor has been de-factored (we'll see II)Please don't have questions about this, because although I'm a forgiving and patient sort, I lost track of this story line.

Bottom line: Wolvie won't be coming back from nuclear explosions and the like anymore.

I passed on The Twelve. It sounds great, but I bet it'll read better as a trade.

Amazing Spider-Man- PICK OF THE WEEK! The new status quo definitely has me pumped for what's in store next. I'm actually pretty excited to see what happens next week! That's exactly what Marvel was going for, and they delivered. McNiven shines (giant shock, right?), there are a few interesting story details (the Jackpot stuff really has my curious), and JJJ has a big surprise at the end. Brand New Day has a its work cut out for it, but it's a good start. 9/10

Thunderbolts- The ONLY reason I didn't give this the pick for this week is because it came out last week. Holy ****. This is everything that mainstream comics SHOULD be. The tension is at level 11, and every issue makes me wonder what could possibly come next. Deodato draws the scariest Venom I've ever seen, and just makes my jaw drop. I was not a big fan of this guy before Thunderbolts, but I would really love to shake his hand, because this book is only second to Captain America as far as I'm concerned, and his art is 50% of it. 9/10

Punisher War Journal- The worst part of this arc is knowing that the 2 phenomenal artists that drew it won't be back next issue. PWJ is not for everyone. It's not incredibly dark, or serious. It's goofy, and it throws Frank Castle into crazy situations in the sometimes silly Marvel Universe. And I love it. The ending was a great touch, too. 8/10

Hulk- Ok, this was fun. It wasn't perfect, but it definitely made me want to buy the next issue. McGuiness is flawless, as well. Loved the Winter Guard's appearance. It's really a testament to Ed that he can make these z-listers come off as really cool. I hope Loeb keeps up the pace, I see good things coming from this book. 8/10

Mighty Avengers- Bendis... I love Frank Cho, really, I do. But... he kinda screwed your story over a bit. This is a good issue. We've got the mega talented Mark Bagley, a possible Skrull reveal (one I've totally been calling) and an interesting strategy on Tony's part. But the problem is, outside of the possible reveal, not much comes off as a surprise. However, I did enjoy it, in spite of that. 7/10

Moon Knight- So I bought two books featuring crazy vigilantes that do some pretty bat**** crazy things this week. However, Moon Knight is no Punisher. I really want to love this book, but the big problem is that there really doesn't seem to be much in terms of story, or direction. With PWJ, we get a great plot with build-up in the form of the Six-Pack. The only thing I see building up is a possible show-down between Moon Knight and Iron Man. I'm giving Benson a few issues, but unless I see some real progression, I'm not sure I can justify buying this. 6/10

Also bought:
X-Factor- I'm holding off on this because my shop sold out of last week's Uncanny X-Men. Hopefully they'll have it next week. It's gonna suck, but it'll make sitting down with the final 3 chapters of Messiah Complex all the sweeter.

Marvel Zombies mini-mates: Black Panther and Iron Man- Hot damn, the detail on these is astounding! Tony's mask kinda sucks, but T'Challa is fantastic. Love the stick arm.

It is. It's not Planet Hulk, but it's a fun little book with beautiful McGuiness art.

And PWJ is fantastic. I love it. I can see why fans of Punisher Max don't dig it, but it's great, and I stand by that. It's had a few hiccups, but when Fraction's on his game, he nails it out of the park.

Hey guys, it's the Early B/T. I don't mind you posting here ( I really don't), but someone always gets their nose out of joint because of it. I have no idea why. The good news is, who ever is fastest gets to make the Official one this week (c'mon Marc, you know you want to).

Oh, and I got the Twelve. I was sort of surprised by it. Wouldn't say it's the best thing I ever read, but pretty good.
