Official: Gotham City Sirens directed by David Ayer - Part 1

Ayer is working on Bright 2 for Netflix
So I imagine they can't do GCS as soon as possible right now
Birds of Prey isn't even a franchise Harley can be the star of, Its more or less a team for Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress

I can see them sticking Harley in that team but it will be a hard sell to me

I thought Bright was fine. I'd be fine with either/both GCs or BoP. If Ayer is to do it then bring his A game please.

Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have chosen Cathy Yan to be the director of an untitled girl gang movie, likely the next superhero film to be graced by Suicide Squad scene-stealer Harley Quinn, in the form of Margot Robbie. A deal has to be completed, but it is expected that Yan will become the second female filmmaker to join the DC club after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins, and the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film. This is a bold bet for Warner Bros’ Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada, who oversee DC under Toby Emmerich. Yan got the job over numerous well established male directors, and because she is taking this giant leap with just one small-budget indie movie under her belt. That would be Dead Pigs, a film that won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January. Despite being a new talent, Yan’s presentation for Birds of Prey was exceptional, and Robbie held firm to her desire for this film to be directed by a woman. This film looks cleared to start production by year’s end or early next year, after Robbie completes Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. It's cool that they made the effort to find a woman director, though. Just looked her movie up on Rotten Tomatoes and boy, the critics who watched it sure liked it, all six of them. :hehe:

DC keep jumping the gun. They need to focus on Suicide Squad 2 first. That won’t be until 2020.

she did win the Special Jury Award at sundance more people than 6 have seen it lol

Every director needs to start somewhere/get their shot. So that doesn't really concern me that much. Also Margot has been pushing for a "women of the DCU" film for awhile now, so I'd imagine that she'd be involved quite a bit behind the scenes as well.

No they don't. Harley Quinn pretty much carried the movie on her back.
Eh, that's Will's title. Margot was a highlight for sure, but I’m not convinced it was for any of the right reasons. Take her sex appeal out the equation and it was nothing special.

Not her fault of course, but Ayer really let me down with her.

So they want to give a no-name director Birds of Prey, and for some reason, the lead character is going to be Harley Quinn?

Looks like she might get 2!

The Birds of Prey tv show featured Harley Quinn as the main villain. Maybe they'll do the same thing here

At this point, as long as Ayer isn't directing i'm good. He has no business directing a female-driven movie.

Yeah, and the GA aren't really clamoring for a SS2.

Assuming they have their stuff together, BOP or whatever this thing ends up being, sounds like a much better idea with several potential marquee characters like Batgirl, Catwoman, Harley, Ivy, Black Canary, etc, who could generate alot more interest with the mainstream than another SS film could.

They may even throw Nightwing in the film and use it as a launch for his own solo flick as they want to do with Batgirl.

Wait my previous post was not meant to be a slight against the director, is that how it came across? I'm perfectly okay with this Yan lady. I haven't see her movie but based on what I'm reading about her, she sounds like an interesting choice, and there are at least six critics who probably feel the same. :o

I prefer to have the BOP as backdrop/antagonists to whatever the GCS are scheming in a GCS film rather than a BOP-focused film.

I guess if they want to use an ensemble film to springboard Barbara Gordon, though, the Birds would have to be the focus and not the villains.

Sounds more like a 'yes man' hiring to me.

There's really no reason there couldn't be a healthy balance of screentime for both groups.

The one thing, the one thing WB/DC has audience goodwill with, following Wonder Woman, is pioneering female superhero leads. And they looked like they could fumble that with Captain Marvel in production.
I’m all for this- heck, let the Reeves Bat-Universe get seeded in this film.

I’ve seen Batman fight the Joker in two epic film climaxes.
Now is the time for Batgirl vs Harley.

Oh yeah. I could see a great balance between Batgirl, Harley, Catwoman, Ivy, and Canary. In addition , they could throw in Renee Montoya if they wanted to.

They're interesting characters , each of which who see the world very different from each other .

I could really see it be innovative in being a comicbook film with several dynamic female leads playing iconic characters. It could be like the Steel Magnolias of comic book films in terms of stellar leads.

I'm very intrigued by this announcement, and hope it comes to fruition .

Yay birds of prey is happening

And good on Margot for sticking to her guns for a woman director. It’ll be fun to see a Harley Quinn without a camera stuck up her bottom for once

They made the decision or Robbie did since she's producing this to go with this movie first and then do suicide squad 2 next year.
I think its smart to at least have an outline for one character.

My only worry is that they are gonna make the movie Harley Quinn and the Birds(which they have the right to do since Robbie is the star and producer) that will be sure to be an element of controversy

Two different sets of characters is going to produces two wildly different stories.

I guess "Why?" is my first question.

How can two Birds of Prey scripts have completely different characters other than Harley/Barbara? What, one has Black Canary and the other has Huntress?
