That's my favorite movie of 2007 simply cause it pulled no punches...
I don't like this rule that says that Hollywood blockbusters have to all have happy endings. :) I mean real life doesn't always work out that way.

psssst...(I think that's why they have that rule)

The Mist had a downer ending and that was okay. I thought it worked for the movie. :)

and look at the box office...it fizzled. And it certainly didn't have the budget of this movie. I mean...If anything...they could probably have pulled off the book ending back in the 70's. They actually took more chances with movies back then. Now it more about the money

most people don't like it because it wasn't that much similar to the book, just check out, i read the book and also seen the movie, and i still liked the movie:up:

A lot of others that didn't like it, like a number of my mouth breathing co-workers, was because it was too slow. They wanted another mindless action film were **** is blowing up ever other minute. I tried to explain that it was a little more about isolation and the character losing his sanity and his daily struggles.

Most of the people I know that didn't like that still said "Well it sucked anyways, it was too slow!"

LOL, the movie was only 90 minutes roughly.

^ Then they should've adapted another story, or made an original one. You don't make "I Am Legend" without that ending, just as you don't make a movie about the Holocaust ending with all the Jews surviving and being just peachy.

I'm sure it's an entertaining, well acted flick, but without the ending it's not "I Am Legend".

Personally I think it's more faithful than the other adaptations of the book. Look at the ending of Planet of the apes....classic...but everything about the movie was different from the book,...but it's still planet of the apes right? Same premise, but different. which can be said about every adaptation.

It's the same way with this movie...The ending was slightly different than the book, it was just a different view of the ending.

See...these are why movies suck these days....it's because of people that want mindless action and always happy endings which make Hollywood want to do movies that appeal to them.

If they thought this was slow....a real true adapation of the book would be worse for them I think.

I hope for the DVD release they put back in that supposed alternate/original ending the studio made them change.

I'm still contemplating if I want to get it on DVD, I liked the movie and Smith's performace but the ending was crap. It totally made the rest of the film kinda lame. Why did they need to introduce that lady and the kid!?!

At first I thought it would not be possible to keep the book ending since the infected were more animal-like than human, but upon closer consideration I think it still could have worked.

Think of the significance added to the scene where Anna (i.e. Ruth) is looking over all the pictures of Neville's test subjects... "So they all died?" ... "Yes". She could have had the same level of understanding and acceptance for Neville, but still give the "they're all afraid of you, some have been waiting all night to see you executed" speech.

I think it could have worked. Again, I really liked the film, don't get me wrong, though I would have preferred the real ending.

IMO the little boy kind of screwed up the ending, if he wasn't in the movie then they could have ended like the book. But i still liked the ending to the movie

This movie was amazing, but when i saw it in imax my heart would not stop pounding.... amazing

You're right, the kid does kind of nullify that possibility.

Box office means ****, IMO.

Look at Casablanca, it got pretty mediocre box office success, so there you go.

The Mist "bombed" or whatever, but it's a freaking great movie.

supposedly a more faithful ending had been shot, but was nixed because they feared too many people would be depressed by the ending.

which is kinda stupid because the premise of I Am Legend is depressing itself. Children of Men didn't sacrifice a depressing ending for a more hopeful one and look how great that movie was.

You're absolutely right. Hopefully, it'll be on the DVD.

Yeah, that's how it went actually. It was nixed by Warner Bros. some in November, after test screenings. It's ridiculous, they had to film the new ending like, three weeks before the release.

P.S.: Will Smith was quite pissed that Warners nixed the original ending so he actually revealed the ending of the movie in an interview. At the end Akiva Goldsman asked the reporters to not write about what Smith had revealed.

That's true, as well. You'd think only FOX would pull some crap like that. Will Smith seemed to generally care about the character of Neville and the film, itself.

Seems like it is, yeah. One thing's for sure, it was darker and more depressing than the ending that ended up being in the theatrical cut. That's why WB nixed it - one months prior to the pic's release.

thats why i thought the movie should be rated R

Did anyone read Ebert's review of I Am Legend? I think his ailments have finally caught up with him. Her eis Ebert's direct quote....

In "I Am Legend," the situation raises questions of logic. If Neville firmly believes he is the last healthy man alive, who is the vaccine for? Only himself, I guess. Fair enough, although he faces a future of despair, no matter how long his cans of Spam and Dinty Moore beef stew hold out; dogs don't live forever.

The whole point of Neville's reasearch was to CURE THE INFECTED. He had no idea others existed and he stated quite clearly that he was already immune so he had no need for a cure. He was testing on already infected rats and infected human creatures. If Ebert missed that major point, his reviews cannot be taken seriously anymore.
