First they cast Will Smith, then move the story from L.A. to New York and now they are going to beef up minor roles by casting huge actors...I dont like the sound of this at all. They should change the title and say its based on the book because this is no longer I Am Legend IMO.

I'm inclined not to believe this rumour. Cortman was a relatively small player in the original book. He didn't posess much depth either, so it seems strange that Johhny Depp, who's know for playing deep eccentric characters, would attach himself to the role.

But that's the beauty of Johnny Depp, you never know what type of role he's willing to play. Look at Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka for crying out loud. These characters aren't on opposite ends of a spectrum, but totally different spectrums altogether!

I love the book, it is on my top 5 all-time fav books list, but this movie makes me sad. I hate it's face. :(

I hate this. I don't hate Will Smith but he is not suited for the role of Neville. this is one of my all time favourite books and they are going to destroy just as they've done with two of my other favourites the Island of Dr. Moreau and The Time Machine.

I can see this turning into another Time Machine, they make up some villain to be seen through the whole thing. It's stupid.

I don't know why Hollywood insists on changing these things. A change of location I can deal with, no problem, but when they start messing with the themes from the book that's when movies based on books go to hell.

This movie needs to be about the desolation and loneliness that Neville is feeling, he's the last man on earth literally and surrounded by hostile enemies. Especially when books have themes that are still relevant and pertinent.

28 Days later will be a truer version of I am Legend then what I've been reading about this one.

Schwarzenegger wasn't right, Smith isn't right.

I could see Jim Caviezel doing Neville. Yes he plays the same character, but it's always a haunted type of person. He looks like he would be an average guy too, which is what Neville should be.

This book was amazing and I hate it when they make a movie based off a book but basically destroy the source material.

Sounds cool.
I like Will Smith movies, so I'll like this.

Depp: Please come out Neville, I would surely love to have a dialogue with you.

Smith: Ooohhh heeelll nnnaaawwww!

:(

Actually, I never read the book, so I wouldn't know. :(

Cortman's character in the book didnt really do anything. Im serious...he didnt do ANYTHING. He goes all paranoid in the book while he's human, and then he's just a stupid zombie vampire that doesnt do much, but always evades Neville somehow.

Johnny Depp is probably the saving grace of this movie. But i think if they cast him, they should have put him in the lead role. He's one of the damn best actors ive ever seen. He can pull it off. But they wont do that.

This movie will most likely suck. Oh well, i still have my Vincent Price "The Last Man on Earth" Dvd, which kicks all kinds of ass and more. Very faithful, with the exception of name changes and the lack of small elements from the book.

I like Will Smith but he does the same crap all the time. Samething with Tom Cruise. When you get a comedic actor in a comedy, it's okay for them to play the same character (Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson and the rest of Frat Pack).

But since Smith is out of the comedic picture in his movie, I don't know if he's the right choice. He just bugs me now. "Oh Hell No."

It made me think that Johnny should of been cast the main character but all well.

It doesn't mean that Smith will ruin this movie. I just hope that he doesn't sleepwalk with his usual antics. He impressed me in Ali...Smith do it again, please.

Smith ruined I, Robot for me, but I hope this time his acting will be better.

I will watch this movie, only because Depp will be here.

Dammit, it's not too late! Just switch the roles!

hey everyone i just wanted to give my own two cents. first off i'm a indie horror director whose making a low budget verson of "I am legend" and if you would like to watch it just IM at AdamTheMovieguy. secondly i always thought that I AM LEGEND should have been made by John Carpenter. he would have made it very cool. i always thought that Kurt Russal would have been a good Neville and Sam neil as Cortmen

Johnny Depp as Neville would be amazing, he can actual act, he would bring everything needed to the role. THat I would pay to go see.

indeed.

i also started reading the Protesevich script last night. Boy was it awful. The vampires, from what i pictured them as looking, going by descriptions look like those crazy things from Blade II(when their mouths dont open in 5 places). Just really pale, can see the veins in their faces, and they're practically hairless.

I read the Protesevich script last night. God, was it horrible. Neville has this full body kevlar suit, a ****load of military weapons and other stuff. He has this beefed up range rover, his house is on a hill, surrounded by huge barracks, security cams, and other crap as well.

They say straight out in a note to readers that even though these "creatures" share the characteristics of vampires, they arent. "they're real" They're called Hemocytes.

The hemocytes are like an uncivilzed tribe of warriors...something you'd see in a Conan story. They play crazy tribal music, divided up into a heirarchy, have tribal brands on them. They can all make their muscles thicker, into some sort of armor. Cortman had some really crappy dialogue, he can control his nail growth into talons. They can control blood to make it come to them(if a pool of blood is on the ground, they can command it to them and absorb it through the skin).

I couldnt finish reading it. it's stupid. THEY CHANGED THE ENDING! I Am Legend isn't an action novel, and it shouldnt be an action film.

I am like totally and seriously looking forward to this film. I've been looking forward to it for a long time. I'm a big fan of Will Smith, so I don't have a problem with his casting. He's a good actor, and a fair bet at the box office.

He'll do a hella job on the movie, IMO.

I agree.
Will Smith was great in just about all of his movies.

I was so afraid this was the type of thing they were going to do. Especially with the success of super hero movies. Neville was just a normal guy caught up in some seriously messed up circumstances and that's the way it should be. My favourite scene is where the vampires are walking around his house, Cortman's taunting him and he starts blaring his classical music. It was such a well painted scene in the book and needs to be in the movie.

I wish Matheson was doing the treatment for it.

they should just try and update the Vincent Price version. Make it take place in more recent times, add more from the book that was left out originally. The Vincent Price version is about as faithful to the book as i think we'll ever see.

They need to use the original book ending though, not the spear through the chest...although the effect is the same.

The movie is about isolation and survival and coming to terms with that. not about "how many vampires you can kill in cool sequences"

So, out of the three, who do you think is the better actor:

Charlton Heston, Vincent Price or Will Smith?
