79% now. Almost always happens with SH movies - the first 20 or so reviews are great, the rest decent but not as good, the wave after that are far less into it, etc.

Wow, this dropped off rather fast. I'm sure I'll love it either way, just kind of
surprised.

The only one that has surprised me was Peter Travers. I figured he'd like it, he's generally positive toward the genre. He gave a positive review to TASM, and I thought that was crap.

Everyone has their own opinion. Look for different things in different movies.

Though this is kinda of funny. There was a bit of arrogance here for a few months.

That one did surprise me as well. He gave 3.5/4 stars to IM1, 3/4 stars to IM2, and 3.5/4 stars to TA. He gave IM3 2.5/4 stars and complained an awful lot in his review. He just sounds bored with the franchise at this point.

What does that mean?

Which part? If it is the latter, many were naming it the best Marvel film yey without even seeing it. As if universal acclaim was inevitable. Same is happening over on the MoS boards. It is ridiculous.

That's definitely what it sounded like to me. I guess to an extent I can understand that, especially considering it's 4 movies in the span of 5 years, so perhaps it can wear thin especially on people who have to do this for a living.

I look at it somewhat backwards in that growing up there was the Superman movies the Hulk TV series and little else. So for me I am not at all bored of the genre, and I want to see more. For those that aren't as into it, perhaps the superhero thing is getting old.

Of course! Marvel Studios can do no wrong and everything they do will earn a billion from now on and get 90+ RT scores...because that apparently means something now.

For what it's worth after my third viewing it's still my favourite MCU film of the lot, i find it so funny how I constantly find myself to be in the minority when it comes to MCU films.

Superheroes ain't going away anytime soon, and I'm happy about that. Can't say the same about vampires and zombies though.

I don't know who was saying that. People were reacting to the twitter feeds, and the European reviews.

79% is certainly not the end of the world, and I didn't think it would be in the 90's as Avengers was and the first IM.

All I was saying was that Travers was the only one that really surprise me in his review. I thought the same thing when Richard Roeper gave a "C" to Captain America, because generally if done tastefully he enjoys the genre. When he gives a bad grade to a film in the genre, it's because it failed in execution ala Spider-man 3.

I understand what you mean. I rue the day that RT gained such infamy that we have to use it as some kind of **** measuring for movies.

I'm less concerned about the score, but I'm certainly glad that MS has not put out a rotten film yet. Some like some films better than others, and that will always be the case, but I want the films to be watchable and continue to spawn more films.

When a Fantastic Four comes out, or a Green Lantern, I think it hurts the genre. Now we've seen that the genre has been able to survive such mishaps, but someone before was talking about franchise killers and that's a real risk here.

Spider-Man 3 execution isn't the problem. It is the story itself.

And yeah, there has been an air of arrogance here. Not TDKR level, but quite a bit. It is why posters are being attacked and reviews are being attacked.

I think people wanted more Iron Man and less Tony Stark. Iron Man 2 gave them more Tony Stark ... Iron Man 3 did the same.

Wouldn't have minded more Iron Man, thats for sure. Especially with all those new suits! I loved the movie though ... after the 2nd viewing it grew on me.

What do you mean? :funny: As in, previous F4 and GL movies? Because I believe even these characters can be made appealing in the right hands.

Yeah that's a fair point if they aren't cranking out stinkers then it's a success. I'm kinda shocked that it's getting lower scores than i thought it would. I completely understand it though and i wouldn't be surprised if this settled in the mid-70's a little disappointed however because I consider this film to be far better than that and plenty of film critics that i respect that are usually on the money seem to dislike this film. (although plenty of them have massive respect for it too) so it's really a marmite film.

Does IM really have the most Iron Man? Wow, did not know that. Though overall it has to be the Avengers right?

I don't think that's the problem, and if it is...then movie audiences for these kind of films have a little bit of growing up to do. When spider-man 2 came out, very few people actually complained about the lack of Spider-man, so many people were just enthralled at the character study aspect it got an excellent reaction from fans. Iron Man 3 has the same thing...so if audiences and critics really are complaining about things it also feels to me like they expect a certain type of entertainment from MCU films rather than letting them branch out to deeper more personal and practical stories.

That New York Times review is so pretentious. I know they'll never like mainstream movies but to not judge a movie on its on merit but instead as something indicative of the problem with major studios is bs.

Don't know really. Someone will eventually figure it out how much suit-time there is in all three movies :woot: Unless ... you are trolling me hard! :cwink:

I haven't seen Iron Man or Iron Man 2 in a while. Should rewatch both of them once 3 arrive on BluRay so I can compare them.

Still think this is the right order for the suit-time though;

Iron Man 1
The Avengers
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3

At first I left the cinema a bit disappointed. Especially after seeing the promo arts for various suits. Would've loved to see more. Oh well!

All in all ... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I read some reviews after I saw Iron Man 3. Can't help but feel sorry for some of them. Bashing the movie because things didn't go how they wanted it to go.

Everyone knew IM3 took place AFTER the Avengers. So it's a safe assumption Tony would have some issues. He went from the "rich-guy-can't-touch-me" to a guy who was in his basement creating suits because he was scared for another invasion. Trying to hide behind his suits.

That, for me, is how you delve into a character and give him more backstory. Iron Man 3 did the right thing.

[EDIT]
Just noticed 4 people gave IM3 a 1/10? Wait ... what? They left after the movie ended but still gave it a 1? Why? If a movie truly sucks ( and I've seen some pretty crappy movies in cinemas ) ... I stand up, and leave.

Yeah, a franchise killer. Why else reboot it? The movie made alot of money, sure, but it was horrible. Raimi clearly had run dry at that point and was ready to scrape the bottom of the barrel for a sequel. What we would have got in SM4 more than likely would have Quest for Peace. Add into this the rise of Batman and Iron Man in 2008 that changed the game. People wouldnt have been excited for a new Spider Man movie after this. Raimi ruined the characters at that point. Its difficult to come back from emo hair, tangoing, and crying when characters like Joker and Tony Stark hit the silver screen. So yeah, a franchise killer....

I'm going to try and say this in the nicest possible way - you have no idea what you are talking about.

Among some posters sure, same thing happens on every board as you mentioned. Clearly the Foreign reviewers are more keen to this than the US.

Like I say other than Travers, I don't think there were many reviews that surprised me.

... ah yes.

Nearly punched another guy in the face when he said : "... well, this wasn't as good as the Dark Knight Rises!"

I hate people who compare every movie to TDKR.

I don't think it deserves a 1. A dubious 7 might be correct. I'm happy the thrill of the fireworks is passing by and the scores and critics reviews reflect the quality of the movie, not only as a stand alone movie, but as a trilogy.

So I've been going over the last few pages, I cannot believe some people are actually preferring IM2 over IM3.
