Comics Official NEW EXILES Discussion Thread

Boy, I sure don't envy those Exiles. @_@

Is that an upcoming thing? Makes sense, because one of the solicits is an all-Wolverine group of the Exiles. Anyway, means Morph isn't gonna bite it, which relieves me.

I hope Claremont puts a darker twist on this book... like it was when Winick started it. I liked that whole idea of the Exiles being dispensable, and being forced to make hard decisions. Bedard did some of that, but as a whole... I dunno. He trailed it off to do the "World Tour," which, to me, has been too long.

Also means Zarda doesn't leave

At least not until Claremont arrives. They had to postpone his start on the book just like a lot of other things, so Bedard is apparently staying on until then.

I'm talking about time travel in relation to going back in time to before a member's death (what sebita was talking about - I assume sebita meant to before a prior Exiles' death) and "saving" them, scooping them out and into the future/current present.

That makes for icky complications.

You're right. Time travel complicates things too much, and can dig writers into a rut to where they can probably never get out, especially with people like the Exiles.

Well issue 83 they have officially started to defrost the Exiles and Weapon X'ers out if the crystal wall, and it looks like they are gonna try to revive T-Bird.

You know, I really, really, really liked this newest issue (83). I'm not normally a huge fan of retrospect, but I think that in this case, since there will soon/eventually be a change in writers, it is somewhat merited.

I think that Bedard's a pretty good writer, definitely. There's enjoyment in reading his work on this title. This issue is evidence of that. He's got some great characterization going on inside though solid dialogue and action, as well as a solid storyline for the issue.

Why couldn't we have seen more issues like this, though? The whole World Tour thing dragged on so, so long, and really, for what? After the second or third world (hell, I lost count), didn't it just start seeming like the same thing in a new issue? It did to me. It was just more of "Oh no! Our plan to trap Proteus failed! He escaped to another world! We have to follow him!"

I don't especially like losing Mimic and Morph, a dislike I've voiced before, but I suppose that I don't totally mind it in the end. One of the things I came to love about Exiles was the constantly changing line-up, and even if taking out Mimic and Morph is akin to DC killing off Batman - well, it worked, more or less. I think it would have worked better if, see above, World Tour hadn't stretched on as long as possible, and even better if Proteus's defeat had been more definate.

But why couldn't we have seen more issues like this? They didn't even have to be downtime in the Crystal Palace, but instead downtime on one of the different realities here or there, mixed in with a bit of action. They would have been golden, he could have fleshed out the characters so well, and Bedard's run might have been perfect.

Oh well.

The new artist is great, I think. I hope he stays. I like him a lot more than I did Calafiore (spelling?). The new guy's Sabretooth is great, looking a lot more like the Sabretooth of the original AoA. And the other characters look pretty good, too (though the look, perhaps, doesn't fit Heather as well).

That's everybody's guess... we don't know when Claremont is going to be healthy enough to take the title...

around what issue is psylocke coming in?

Most likely not too much longer, because she's already been booted out of the main Earth universe, if you read the last New Excalibur. Claremont likely did get at least some of the basic stories done, so whoever sits in for him while he recovers, could still do some of his ideas.

ETA: Who wants to bet that thanks to the last issue of New Excalibur that
Proteus and the Shadow King will team up some time during Claremont's run?

I just picked up the first four trade paperbacks of Exiles, and WOW! Aside from Astonishing X-Men, this is my new favorite book. :) A couple of random comments, at least from the early issues:

* I usually don't like revolving-door casts with a lot of fatalities, but it works for Exiles somehow. Maybe because their straits are so dire and they're mostly alt-reality versions so it's not like it's the characters we "know" being killed, and anyway it was set up from the very beginning to be like that with Magnus. Somehow it manages to raise the stakes without depressing me, which isn't easy to do. Although...

* If this Morph thing I'm hearing about from the new issues sticks, I will be upset. Because Morph's da man.

* Blink is a terrific character, too. There's just something about a butt-kicking lavender gal with pointed ears... and she's exactly the right mix of tough, yet not emotionless. Plus her relationship with AoA Sabretooth is cool...

* I usually like Chris Claremont's work and disregard the criticism, but my goodness, he did screw up Nocturne's character starting with her appearance in Uncanny, didn't he? It's not so much that I mind his chatty-teenage-Kurt version of TJ, but she's totally not the same person as the super-cool warrior from Exiles.

* Their Trial of the Phoenix storyline was almost as good as the original, and I also like the early story with the Vi-Locks, and the first one where they meet Weapon X.

* Also liking Morph's friendship with Sunfire, especially the whole issue that was basically them bonding. I'll miss Sunfire...

I guess that's it for now. Just wanted to express my appreciation for this series, 'cause at least the early stuff is one of the better comic books I've read in a while...

The solicit reads:

Exiles #84 will arrive in stores on July 26 from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by Tony Bedard, with art by Jim Calafiore and a cover by Paul Pelletier.

Here's how Marvel describes the book:

"'Back in the Saddle,' part 1 of 6. With the World Tour finally at an end, the Exiles are demanding a break. They take the time to visit their homes and get some much needed down time. However, there are worlds out there that still need their help. But if the Exiles aren't willing to do the job...who will replace them?"

Exiles #84 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.99.

Yeah but she's just 100% unattractive. There's nothing on her I would be interested in.

Hey guys. First post here on the X-threads ( I think) but long time fan of the series. Been away since the Black Bolt VS Iron Man story (so I'm guessing its been a LONG time). I like the new line-up. Visiting the 2099 Marvel Universe was interesting and including Miguel O'Hara into the Exiles makes for a very nice twist. Sticking to selective X-Characters was rather dull. A little OT, but if you had a chance to choose some characters from any Marvel related reality to be Exiles, who'd you pick? Mine are:

-Spiral (Mojoverse)
-Avalanche (X-Men Evolution)
-Stryfe (616 I guess)
-Nova ( The Silver Surfer Character. The one Morg killed)

Well thats about it. Later days

I'm glad the Exiles have been fired. I know it'll never happen but how nice would it be if a totally new team were assembled to replace them. As much as I like Blink (and Sabes sometimes), I'll gladly sacrifice them to get rid of the rest of the team.

Morph just isn't the same. I know he's the "same" but you know what I mean. :(

Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

"'The New Exiles,' part 1 of 2. Snikt, to the sixth power! With the Exiles fired, it's time for a new group of dimension-jumping heroes. Wolverine has always been known as the best there is at what he does, so six Wolverines must be really really really good at what they do! Can the Exiles get their jobs back from these scene-stealing Canucks? Don't bet on it!"

Exiles #85 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.99.

What, no "this is the stuff of nightmares" or "so THAT'S how he gets to be everywhere at once" cracks? Y'all are goin soft. :p

I've been banging my head against a wall since I found out about this arc. Too much Logan at once :(

I might pick this up just for the insanity factor of it.
