  • Approximately 3.5 to 7 hours when using Nintendo 3DS software
  • Approximately 7 to 12 hours when using Nintendo DS software

  • * Depending on the brightness of the screens, the battery duration varies. When the “automatic brightness adjustment” is on, the brightness of the screens changes automatically in accordance with the brightness of the surroundings and, therefore, the battery duration becomes longer in dark places and becomes shorter in bright places. Also, when the “energy saving mode” is on, the battery duration becomes longer.
  • * The above Battery Durations are rough indications and can be shorter depending on the status of use.

Notable differences between old and new models:

  • The screen of the New Nintendo 3DS is slightly larger than the screen of the current Nintendo 3DS model. Meanwhile, the screen of Nintendo 3DS XL is the same size as the current 3DS XL model.

  • Battery life for both devices is slightly improved over current models.

  • No Wi-Fi switch any more. Wi-Fi is now turned on/off from the Home menu.

  • Stereoscopic 3D effect now remains even if you view the system as an angle. This is made possible by the 3DS’ player-facing camera and gyro-sensors working in tandem to track your face.

  • Only MicroSD cards are supported on the system now.

Hm, I wonder how comparable the New 3DS is to the XL screen-size if it's a little bigger than the OG 3DS. If it's big enough, I may go for that than the New XL, because it's more likely I can sell my XL and get it for the cheap, since I assume it'll be cheaper than the XL.

Wait they are not phasing out my recently purchased Nintendo 3DS XL, right?

They will still be making games compatible with the original 3DS and XL models, so no. Not sure what the longterm goal will be, though. They may be planning to phase it out in the next 2-3 years.

Just picked up Crashmo. The game is amazing in every way. I can't help but thinking though that Crashmo is what the Wii U version should have been. Either way, this Pushmo series may very well be one of my new favorites.

Rumor: Wal-mart flier features Smash Bros. 3DS XL

Americans might not have to glare jealously across the Atlantic when Nintendo of Europe releases a special 3DS XL bundle alongside Super Smash Bros.: A supposed scan of a Wal-Mart flier has been posted to NeoGAF (not shown above, click through to see), which features Europe's red Smash 3DS XL beside a blue counterpart. With no mention of an included Smash download like the European bundle, the flier prices both red and blue versions at $199.96 and features a "Get it First!" logo that dates the hardware for September 19.

If you're particular about your special edition handhelds, the Japanese Smash 3DS XL swaps the series' name for a larger, lighter Smash Ball logo. Regardless of your 3DS XL preference, even if the special edition reaches the States, you'd still need to decide whether you're holding off for the new, Xenoblade-compatible 3DS and 3DS XL models.

Okay. Enjoy not being able to play Xenoblade Chronicles, and the other games that will only work on the New 3DS.

Only an idiot would buy this now.

Games will continue to be made that will play on both current 3DS models and "New" 3Ds models, so it's not obsolete as long as you can still use it. You're just assuming that everyone is going to start making games as exclusive to the New models, but considering the still short lifespan of the current 3DS models, and the very slow conversion of last gen to current gen on home consoles, there's not a huge basis to this assumption. It's probably not baseless to assume that the idea is that these New models will eventually phase out the older models, but much like the Gameboy Color, the process will probably be a fairly slow one (and, in that case, the original Gameboy was on the shelf a lot longer than the original 3DSs).

Would you have bought a Gameboy a year before the Gameboy Color came out for the same price?

I sure wouldn't. Which, I don't think that's a perfect analogy, but I still think that would be stupid.

I imagine Nintendo is going to start churning out New 3DS games as soon a possible, since presumably, they want to sell their New 3DS.

You might get a bastardized version of some new games for the old 3DS... maybe. But since there is actually a major power difference apparently, that's not a given.

It's probably not a huge presumption that current 3DS models will go down in price when the New models come out. Nothing has been announced as such, but I doubt the price will be the same for both older and newer models.

There is a power difference, but there was also a power difference between the GB and GBC, but software that functioned on both continued to be made for a long time and again, that was a much bigger release difference. The 3DS has been on the market three years, and has a 40 million userbase. Doubtful that Nintendo or their partners want to just shake that off. Obviously, games exclusive to the New hardware will be made, but it's very unlikely that we'll see them abandon the original 3DS totally. The most likely scenario is that we'll continue to see games that work for both and not "versions" of games to bastardize, even major releases. For instance, Pokemon Gold and Silver was playable on both the GB and GBC; there was not a separate version for each piece of hardware. Games that could function on both were labeled as only Gameboy Color, games that could only function on a GBC were labeled as Only for Gameboy Color. This is the mostly likely scenario.

I mean, yeah, I agree with the overall sentiment that getting the New hardware will be preferable, but I think it's fairly baseless to assume the old 3DS models will be abandoned completely and become "obsolete" over night. Only time will tell, but I find the situation doubtful.

Looks like Monster Hunter 4 will get a collector's edition for NA:

The price on it will be $59.99

New 3DS models will be region-locked, (th)womp (th)womp

If "no region-lock" was on your list of desired features for Nintendo's new 3DS models, well ... we hope the addition of a C-stick, ZL and ZR buttons, built-in NFC and a better CPU will make up for that feature not making the cut. GameSpot has confirmed with Nintendo that the new 3DS and 3DS XL will, like their currently-available siblings, be region-locked.

We can't say we're surprised, considering Nintendo has a longstanding history of region-locking their hardware, and it's not just limited to handhelds, as both the Wii and Wii U are also region-locked. Still, at least now we have confirmation.

Is the screen larger on the smaller version? It looks a little bit bigger than the original 3DS. That screen was tiny compared to the XL, but those pics make it look like it has a bit bigger of a screen than the older version.

It is, yes. It's in-between the OG model and the current XL model.

Can't say I'm surprised about the region lock. While I understand why people want the 3DS to be region-free, I think it was unreasonable given Nintendo's reputation and habits.

Yeah, I'm thinking it won't be until the next full piece of hardware that we see Nintendo embrace region-free, and even then, who ****ing knows.

I can understand the region lock, but I can't understand why you can't use the circle pad pro with Smash. That really just boggles my mind. Especially how that New 3DS is supposed to be compatible with that little nub on Smash.

Yep, it's pretty weird, considering how big of a release Smash is going to be. MH4, the other big release for Japan, still has support for it, I believe.

Pretty scummy of Nintendo, but I suppose it's to migrate people to the N3DS to enjoy C-sticking in Smash.

New 3DS Models Announced – Update

UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed that the new models will be region locked, which means you won’t be able to buy one in Japan and then use it to play games purchased in North America. This shouldn’t come as too big a surprise given that Nintendo does this with most of their platforms, although some fans have probably thought about doing it anyway.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Handheld gaming is getting better, because Nintendo has unveiled the latest 3Ds and 3DS XL models.
The best new feature is that they both have a second analogue thumb stick built in, which makes the cumbersome Circle Pad Pro obsolete. Known as the C-Button, this will give players better control of first-person games, and is something that fans have been wanting for years. There’s also new shoulder buttons, a faster CPU, a micro USB slot, and an improved display that Nintendo says will offer better 3D visuals when viewed from different angles.
Another big feature is that both 3DS models will have built-in NFC technology, which means they’ll work with Nintendo’s upcoming Amiibo toys. They’re Skylanders-style figures that you buy in stores, which will unlock new in-game content across multiple Wii U and 3DS games. You can watch our chat with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime about the Amiibo toys by clicking here.
The new 3DS and 3DS XL will hit Japan in October, with a North American release expected for next year. They can’t get here soon enough, because Nintendo has also announced that a new version of Xenoblade Chronicles, originally released on the Wii in 2010, is being built for the new models. They say they wanted to bring it to the original 3DS, but the CPU power was lacking, and the second thumb stick will also be a big help. It will not be playable on the older 3DS models.

Super Smash Bros. supports new 3DS C-stick, not Circle Pad Pro

The portable version of Super Smash Bros. will not support the Circle Pad Pro accessory for 3DS, according to a support page on Nintendo of Japan's website, as translated by NeoGAF. With the recent announcement of a new 3DS and 3DS XL, the upcoming entry in the Super Smash Bros. series will reportedly favor the new devices' use of extra shoulder buttons and C-stick as opposed to the accessory that added a second circle pad and shoulder buttons to existing 3DS systems.

This implies that players using a traditional 3DS or 3DS XL will be locked to using controls specific to those consoles without the extra buttons and joystick. The game will launch prior to the new hardware; Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is due out September 13 in Japan and October 3 in North America. The revised systems, which will be region-locked, will launch October 11 in Japan and won't make the calendar year in the west. The other version of the game for Wii U will arrive this holiday season. We've reached out to Nintendo to confirm the 3DS version's lack of support for the Circle Pad Pro and will update as we learn more.
