Apparently, Australia, of all places in the Western world, will be getting this early on November 21st. Apparently, they are also actually going with the name "New 3DS" as the official title of this machine.

I saw that. Australia gets it, but not Europe or North America, not until next year at least. Kinda weird.

Very weird. I can't believe they are going to call it the New 3DS, either. I guess I shouldn't be surprised with Nintendo's streak of horrifically bad names, but seriously, like after three years or so we're still going to be seeing the "New 3DS" on shelves.

They've really thrown in the towel on naming. The New 3DS and the names of the new Smash games really show how little they give a **** about names now.

Is Australia considered West? I mean its on the same side of the world as Japan

for all we know they could drop the name by then. IA that its still dumb either way

I've never heard it referred to as Asian or Eastern before.

Considering how they're going to be out in the wild in less than two months time, I doubt, unless they're going to rename it in other regions outside Japan and...Australia.

yes Australia is considered to be apart of the west the only thing it shares with Aisan country's is the time zone's (which they are day ahead of us ad places in Europe) mostly japan's that's about it.

I think "the west" is more of a reference to culture than geographical location.

yes it is people from there are like both the people in the states and canada(the bits & France fighting for it here) when it was formed. it was from people from the British empire(well mostly) that had their troubles with their home lands when they were just colonies back then. but eventually became their own country in various dates. ether way it's part of the west due to that.

Im talking about the 3 years from now, which you mentioned in your post. By then the older models may have been long discontinued and the "New" 3DS, may be rebranded as simply the 3DS

I don't think I've ever used Miiverse on my 3DS. I do a little here and there for my Wii U, though.

When creating the DS, Nintendo wanted to make sure it could survive frequent drops from the height of the average breast pocket.

Monster Hunter, Yo-kai Watch, Gunvolt Get Nintendo 3DS Custom Themes In Japan. September 29, 2014 . 11:00am

This week, Nintendo updated their website in Japan with a look at some of the custom themes being released.
As previously reported, custom themes are coming to the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS. These will be based on various games for the platform, and you’ll be able to purchase them from an online store through the system itself. This week, Nintendo updated their website in Japan with a look at some of the themes being released.

Naturally, both Yo-kai Watch and Monster Hunter 4G have custom themes based on them. Meanwhile, Arc System Works pitched in with a BlazBlue: Clone Phantasma theme and Inti Creates went wild with ten different Gunvolt themes.

Themes vary in price, too. The Gunvolt themes range from 100-150 yen each, while Yo-kai Watch and Monster Hunter are 200 yen apiece.

So, are these for the OG models, too? I thought it was just a new 3DS thing.

It seems it's for the former model of 3DS too. But they did say just japan. If it's for here or the west too it's would be cool.

3DS mod adds smashing GameCube controller support

With the launch of the exceptional Super Smash Bros. for 3DS looming, some might still be miffed that the game won't support the Circle Pad Pro add-on. Though the game will make use of the new 3DS and 3DS XL's C-stick, some may want a separate controller entirely for optimized Smash Bros. usage. A new 3DS mod introduced late last week does just that, giving players the ability to play any 3DS game with a GameCube controller.

The hardware hack is courtesy of dekuNukem, the same modder that delivered an automatic shiny Pokemon finder mod last year. According to the demonstration video seen after the break, those looking to dust off their GameCube controllers for the mod will spend roughly $12 for the parts needed, which include a handful of resistors, a circuit board and an LCD screen from a Nokia phone. The screen offers a visual aid so players can change button configurations from the controller itself. DekuNukem doesn't have a full detailed list of instructions for the mod yet, which results in an empty circuit board on the bottom side of your still-functional 3DS, but they are accepting a few send-in modification requests.

So, they released the theme stuff today. Came with an update to the eShop, kind of changed the look of the dashboard slightly. I think it's pretty cool myself, purely cosmetic of course, but fun. $2 isn't too bad, because it doesn't just change the skin, but it actually changes the music and the sounds when you open icons, which I think is cool as hell. Not much there now, mostly Mario stuff and a Zelda one. I bought the Zelda one, and I dig it. Hope they start giving these away for Club Nintendo or something; that'd be cool.

A firmware update released for the Nintendo 3DS in North America adds a couple of new features to the system, as well as support for custom themes.

A firmware update released for the Nintendo 3DS in North America adds a couple of new features to the system, as well as support for the custom themes that Nintendo announced a few weeks ago. The update, which is Version 9.0.0-20U, adds the following features:

  • Support for custom themes to customize the HOME menu
  • Five custom themes pre-installed (more can be purchased)
  • Screenshots of HOME menu can now be captured
  • Nintendo Image Share feature accessible from HOME menu
  • Nintendo eShop Title Information page makes it easier to access demos and videos
  • Stability improvements to the system

The themes that are presently available via the Theme Shop cost $0.99 or $1.99 each, and are primarily based on patterns or first-party Nintendo characters. Third-party themes haven’t been made available yet.

Update: Custom themes are available in Europe as well.

I'm probably not going to buy a theme, but I DL'd the update, and changed the color to black. Not sure why they don't have a green one?

They should really just have a set of HSB sliders for the theme color, would be much better. And they should totally see if they can get the people that did the Colors app to create some sort of theme creator in the same vein as Colors3D.

I wonder when they'll be adding more themes. Girlfriend is bummed there's no Animal Crossing ones. I bought the Mario one. Looks rad.

Metroid Joins Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate As Part Of A Collaboration In Japan. October 8, 2014 . 4:34am

Similar to the other collaborations, the one with Metroid: Other M will feature quests that will allow you to gather materials to make Samus’ Varia Suit and Zero Suit.
[YT]7F6Lq2Hxs7M[/YT]
Earlier this morning, Nintendo streamed their latest Nintendo Direct presentation for the Japanese release of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, which will be available this weekend in Japan. At the end of the stream, there was a special little something for Metroid fans.

Similar to the other collaborations, the one with Metroid: Other M will feature quests that will allow you to gather materials to make Samus’ Power Suit and Zero Suit, along with a Bowgun weapon that looks like her Arm Cannon. By collecting all the pieces of the set, they will make some sounds you might be familiar with from the Metroid series.

The collaboration will run from December 17th, 2014 – January 28th, 2015. It will be available via 7-Eleven stores throughout Japan.

Not limited to the collaboration with Metroid: Other M, all collaborations will feature special limited edition Guild Cards as well.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will release in Japan this Saturday, and a western release in early 2015 for Nintendo 3DS. Since the Zelda and Animal Crossing collaborations are confirmed for the West, the Metroid collaboration will probably make its way over, too.

Yes, The Metroid Equipment In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Is Coming To The West. October 8, 2014 . 5:17am

Capcom USA and Nintendo have confirmed that the Metroid: Other M collaborative equipment in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be available in the West.

[YT]MVvN5Yo7YRQ[/YT]

Capcom USA and Nintendo have confirmed that the Metroid: Other M collaborative equipment in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be available in the West. The collaboration was announced via a Japanese Nintendo Direct for the game earlier this morning.

Metroid isn’t the only Nintendo franchise that will be represented in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Players will also be able to use Link’s tunic and weapons from the Zelda series, and will also be able to dress their Palicoes (AKA Felynes) up as Isabelle and Mr. Resetti from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Meanwhile, other non-Nintendo franchises are being included in the game, too. A collaboration with Bandai Namco’s Taiko Drum Master and Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog are part of the mix, and Capcom even said to Siliconera that the Sonic collaboration was created with MH4U’s Western release in mind.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be released in North America and Europe in early 2015.

I had no idea there were 7-Elevens in Japan?

Oh man, 7-11 is huge in Asia. In Thailand and Korea, they are at almost every store corner. I haven't been to Japan yet, but I figure it's about the same.
