Official Nintendo 3DS Thread

Yeah I have the 3DSXL, so no SNES there; but not too much of an issue as I'm keeping an eye on the NX as well. Plenty of NES games to play through until then.

I just got the Pokemon anniversary 3DS and have been playing a lot of that...but yet to invest in any 3DS titles or DS titles as of now. Was thinking for now, maybe Mario Kart 7, Smash Bros, Xenoblade, maybe Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and since I've never played it, the DS version of Chrono Trigger. Anyone have any suggestions for good 3DS titles? Genre makes no difference.

Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Fire Emblem Awakening and the Fates games, Pokemon X/Y.

You can't go wrong with the Fire Emblem games on 3DS. They're all masterpieces. Smash Bros is ok, but the console version is vastly superior. Xenoblade is identical to the console version so if you have a Wii U it's cheaper to buy it on there for $19.99 I believe. Super Mario 3D Land was a blast. Rhythm Heaven Mega Mix is terrific, as is the Pushmo series.

Given how the Wii U is pretty much dead in the water, as much as I'd like to test out Smash Bros for the Wii U, I'll pass on that for now. Nintendo hasn't given me enough of an incentive to buy into it, more so now that they're pushing the NX.

I don't know they put out pretty decent bundle

anyway moving on from that BACK ON TOPIC

Kirby: Planet Robobot Director Talks Tough Challenges And Inspirations . August 11, 2016 . 9:30am

On Nintendo’s Miiverse, fans recently got the chance to ask Kirby: Planet Robobot director Shinya Kumazaki their questions about the newest title in the Kirby series during an “Ask-a-thon.”

Many of the questions dealt with the development process of the game, such as one which asked how the team came up with the title “Kirby: Planet Robobot.” Kumazaki replied with the following:
“Initially, we’d planned to call it “Kirby: HAGANE” (“hagane” is Japanese for “steel”), but as Popstar would be populated by robots, we then leaned towards “Kirby: Robot Planet”. As titles go, this was far too literal and lacked impact, so we changed it again to “Roborobo Planet”. One last tweak and the result was “Planet Robobot”, which is in keeping with the playfulness of the Kirby universe. The name for the “Robobot Armor” also came up around this time.”

Next, Kumazaki was asked what exactly had inspired the creation of Kirby: Planet Robobot, as well as how long it took to produce it, to which Kumazaki had this to say in response:
“Since we ended up developing two Kirby games in a row using the same hardware – the first being Kirby: Triple Deluxe – this time, we wanted to do a completely different take on the world. At the same time, we were also hoping to attract a new audience. We thought a mechanized world would do well, since then it would be the polar opposite to the previous game’s warm skies and lush scenery. The concept for the Robobot Armor was then proposed as a means of performing new copy abilities unique to the mechanized world. Regarding the length of development, we worked on Planet Robobot in parallel with other titles such as Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe, and it was completed in under two years.”

Another question asked Kumazaki if there was a specific part of the creation process that proved most challenging, and if there were any areas he would like to improve if given the chance. Kumazaki replied with the following:
“We were instructed by our producer to avoid any situation that might remind players of Triple Deluxe and I think that although this was a great idea, it was a nightmare to put into practice. We had limited development time and still had to make use of the assets from the previous game. Because we were using Triple Deluxe’s engine, a lot of the gameplay felt similar, so I was constantly fighting to preserve the Kirby series’ distinctive feel and yet produce something fresh and new. There were, of course, many things that I would have liked to refine or improve, but rather than regret not being able to address them, I try to use those shortcomings as motivation to look to the future and help myself do a better job next time. It’s a continuous process that never really ends.”

To cap off the first round of the Ask-a-thon, Kumazaki was asked if Susie was Haltmann’s real daughter, or if she was just a clone or a robot. Kumazaki explained with this reply:
“Allow me to explain: Susie is not a clone; she is Haltmann’s real daughter. I’d had in mind two story paths – one in which you finish the game and the story concludes comfortably even without knowing Susie’s identity, and one that reveals more answers after you sink a lot of time into the game. But in Planet Robobot, the story is designed with just a small twist to surprise you when you find out Susie’s last name. I initially considered making it so that Haltmann, in his loneliness, created a robotic Susie who believed she was alive, but that idea was discarded to avoid overcomplicating the story. At the time, I also considered a scenario with one final twist, where you discover that Haltmann was actually a robot all along.”

The collection includes nine total games from the Sega Mega Drive, GigaDrive and Master System back catalogs, including:

 • Maze Walker – Originally designed for the SegaScope 3-D glasses on the Sega Master System, Maze Walker comes to life on the 3DS, faithfully reproducing the sense of depth as players try to escape the mysterious, twisting maze filled with unknown dangers. This remastered version has upgraded graphics with double the resolution of the original for a more pleasing aesthetic.
 • Altered Beast – Summoned from the dead by Zeus, players in Altered Beast must shape shift into various beasts and fight off hordes of demons to rescue the captured Athena from the clutches of Neff. Offers local co-op multiplayer.

New footage from Metroid Prime: Federation Force shows Samus Aran making an appearance at the end of a mission.

The stars of Metroid Prime: Federation Force aren’t familiar faces. They’re blank slates, each one a nameless and faceless member of the Galactic Federation marines. However, Samus Aran cameos have been teased and a new video of the Nintendo 3DS game’s twelfth mission shows her showing up to aid a player’s party. (Thanks, Game Xplain!)

In the Metroid Prime: Federation Force video, Samus shows up briefly after the 3:25 mark. In this mission, players are attempting to protect a probe from a Rohkor Beetle. Someone swoops in when the fight appears to be at its end.

Meet Royal Priestess Rayfa In Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. August 16, 2016 . 4:00pm

Capcom reveals everything fans need to know about Ace Attorney series’ new

RoyalPriestessRayfa_thumb.jpg
Capcom has started a series of blog posts sharing everything players need to know about the cast of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice before the game’s digital launch on September 8, 2016. In the first post, fans get an introduction to the Royal Priestess Rayfa Padma Khura’in.

As detailed in the Capcom blog, Rayfa is a 14-year-old princess of the Kingdom of Khura’in. She is also a priestess with a lot of responsibilities. Rayfa performs a daily Dance of Devotion at the Tehm’pul Temple, and her spiritual powers are also used to resolve legal matters. How her powers are used in court are described as follows.
In the courtroom, Rayfa’s powers of Spirit Communion also allow her to guide the soul of the victim to a large reflecting pool in the center of the hall, a practice known as the Divination Séance. With this, the pool will display for all to see the last moments of the victim’s life, and with Rayfa’s insights based on these scenes, judgment is then passed.

Rayfa’s powers of divination are so strong she can recall the victim’s last moments, even details like the way things look, taste, or smell. As such, the priestess is used to seeing her word be passed along as judgment. As someone who is described as having a “frosty air of superiority” when dealing with others, it should be interesting to see how she handles a defense attorney who turns everyone’s thinking around.

A few notable inclusions in the 3DS lineup for the sale are The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Super Mario 3D World. Are your ready for a controversial Nintendo Download? The latest and arguably greatest are here again for the week of 8/18/16, and we’ll start off with the most prickly game release from Nintendo in a long time. Besides that, we have plenty of new sales, releases and other goodies for the 3DS and Wii U eShop. Let’s get started.

Yes, today marks the official release of the highly contested and downright hatedMetroid Prime: Federation Force. I wish I could look at this in a positive light, but frankly, after the way Nintendo ignored the latest anniversary of the classic series, it’s hard to be kind when they cap it off with the Metroid game nobody wanted. That said, I shouldn’t judge a game without having played it, so I’ll be paying a lot of attention to the reviews and impressions that come out for Metroid Prime: Federation Force. Luckily, that’s not the only release this week. Also new to the Wii U eShop is the fantastic indie title Poncho, which we previously reviewed on Steam. It’s a gorgeous pixelated puzzle game with a lot of heart, robots and an interesting narrative. I highly recommend it. Also, if you can’t get your fill ofPokémon, there is another Virtual Console release for Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs.

On the sales front, there is a lot of stuff this week, but as always, I’ll just focus on the best stuff. For the Wii U, the only noteworthy sale is Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, for those who love the absurd in their puzzle platformers. For the 3DS eShop there are a bunch of great games on sale, starting with two from publisher Nicalis. First up is 1001 Spikes, the hard as nails, ruthless pixelated platformer. The other of note is the classic Cave Story. Both are on sale until August 29th of this month, so you should definitely pick them up if you don’t already have them. If that wasn’t enough, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked and Soul Hackers are on sale, as is the quirky and relatively obscure Zombie Panic in Wonderland DX. Be sure to check these out while you can!

There is also a special event happening called the Nintendo 3DS Summer Gaming List Sweepstakes. By answering some select questions here, you could win up to 8 digital games for yourself. The games are from the following list – Kirby: Planet Robobot, Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Disney Art Academy, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, New Super Mario Bros. 2 and either Pokémon Omega Ruby or Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. Some pretty great stuff, actually.

There are also some new Themes this week, including two from Monster Hunter Generations, as well as some random new releases, such as Armikrog, which we’ll have a review of later this month. Overall a mixed week, but definitely with some worthy sales for the bargain hunter. Stay tuned to oprainfall for the next Nintendo Download!

Lastly

Capcom’s Kellen Haney took to the Unity Blog earlier today to give details on two of the characters appearing in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, the newest entry in the long-running visual novel series. The first of these will be a familiar face for longtime fans of the series. Spirit medium Maya Fey will be making her return in the sixth installment of the mainline series. Acting as Phoenix Wright’s assistant since the first game, fans haven’t seen her as a central character since 2007’s Trials and Tribulations (though she was seen most recently in the spin-off game Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney). Maya has spent the years since then training to become the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, a title previously held by her mother. When Wright visits the Kingdom of Khura’in, he soon runs into his old friend, who has been working to further increase her mystical powers. Before long, though, it seems that Wright will have need of Maya’s unique talents once again.

Making his debut in the new game (and keeping with the series’ pun-tastic naming conventions) is Ahlbi Ur’ghaid, a young boy who works as a tour guide in Khura’in. Ahlbi apparently takes his job very seriously and will go on hours-long tangents about the many complex facets of the kingdom’s culture if you let him. Not everything in Khura’in might be on the up-and-up, however, as Ahlbi is soon accused of both theft and murder. Wright quickly jumps to the boy’s defense, but it seems as though there is a deep hatred of lawyers in the kingdom, and Ahlbi wants no help from a dirty attorney like Phoenix Wright! Honestly, this kid seems like a prime client for the game’s first case.
Check out the full nitty-gritty below:
In the second of our series covering just some of the many characters in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, we take a break from our protagonist and newly introduced royal priestess Rayfa to focus on the return of Phoenix’s long-time friend, Spirit Medium (in training), and Ace Assistant, Maya Fey! We’ll also be discussing the capable (if not overzealous) new character Ahlbi Ur’gaid, a young monk who also works as a tour guide. Turns out these two have a bit more in common than one might think.
Maya made her first appearance in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as part of a twisting and gloomy case that implicated Maya as a murder suspect. Despite Maya being initially accused of the crime – an accusation that Phoenix quickly clears after taking on Maya’s case himself – Maya soon joins forces with Phoenix to find the true murderer and bring them to justice. Following the sad circumstances that resulted in Phoenix and Maya inheriting the Fey & Co. Law Offices, Maya soon decided that she wanted to take on the role of Phoenix’s assistant. This new friendship born out of tragedy resulted in not only the offices being rebranded as the Wright & Co. Law Offices, but also helped lift Maya’s mood, soon bringing her back to her naturally cheery self. Maya’s unique ability to channel the spirits of the dead (which causes her physical appearance to change as a result), alongside her natural intuition and optimistic outlook, helped Phoenix through many of his early cases – though her channeling sometimes caused her more problems than it solved!
Eventually, Maya returned to her home in Kurain Village to continue her training as a Spirit Medium and perfect her usage of the Kurain Channeling Technique in order to become the eventual Master of the mystical art – though it seems that she kept in touch with Phoenix all the while. Leading up to the events of Spirit of Justice, Maya has spent the last two years in the Kingdom of Khura’in to increase her spiritual energy and complete her training so that she can be recognized as the head of Kurain Village – though it’s hard to tell if she’s been taking her training all that seriously. It is Maya, after all.
Despite the many years between when we last saw her and now, she really seems like the same old Maya – just as spirited, just as big of a fan of the Steel Samurai and other heroes of justice, and just as ready to take jabs at Phoenix’s hair every chance she gets. Despite all her training, it seems like she hasn’t changed in the slightest – right down to her love of hamburgers and getting into all kinds of trouble where Phoenix may need to offer his legal aid.
That’s at least one thing she has in common with Ahlbi Ur’gaid, a young monk who also works as a tour guide to show foreigners around the Kingdom of Khura’in. An industrious and energetic boy who loves to tell people about Khura’in with an eager “Allow me to explain,” Ahlbi puts everything he has into everything he does – particularly his highly detailed explanations of Khura’in’s history, which can take upwards of a few hours! More often than not, Phoenix has to put a stop to Ahlbi’s history lessons before they can get started, though it seems as though Ahlbi likes to talk about the places he showed “Miss Maya” during her time in the Kingdom of Khura’in, too.
Aside from showing foreigners the sights and greeting people with the traditional Khura’inese greeting “hap’piraki,” Ahlbi also carries around the tools of his trade in the gigantic bag he has on his shoulder, including a sweet cake known as a magatah’man, or “soul bun.” Seems like he offers it to everyone he shows around the Kingdom. I wonder what else is in that bag of his, anyways? H-hey… was it just me, or did it move just now?
It’s hard to believe that this earnest boy could harm anyone, which is why it’s such a shock when he’s accused of both the theft of his homeland’s holy relic and the murder of a guard at Tehm’pul Temple! Even so, when Phoenix jumps in to defend him, Ahlbi’s friendly attitude suddenly changes when he finds out Phoenix is a lawyer. It seems the people of Khura’in really do hate lawyers, but Ahlbi’s resistance to Phoenix’s help makes things that much more difficult. How do you defend someone who doesn’t seem to want you to defend them?
That’s all for today, but next time we’ll be taking a trip back to the Wright Anything Agency to catch up with Apollo Justice, and learn more about the globetrotting international prosecutor, Nahyuta Sadhmadhi. See you then!
Personally, I’m extremely pleased to see Maya finally making a comeback after so many years. I’m greatly looking forward to seeing how far she’s come along since we last saw her, as well as what stories we’ll see develop. The wait is starting to get unbearable, but Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is set for release on 3DS on September 8.

Anyone picked up Metroid: Federation Force? Thoughts?

PAX West is just around the corner, and Nintendo is doing their best to strut their stuff and show off the games that will be on display. Nintendo’s Senior VP had a lot to say, stating “PAX West gives Nintendo a great opportunity to showcase both mainstream and Nindie titles to a video game savvy audience,”. He also went on to say “Having the show essentially in Nintendo’s backyard and getting a chance to connect with our fans makes it all the more special for us.”

As for specifics, they will have several big names on display. First and foremost is perhaps Pokémon Sun and Moon, which are sure to be incredibly popular entries in the enormous series. They will also have the second entry in the marvelously popular (in Japan, at least) Yo-Kai Watch. I truly was impressed with the first game, and think Yo-Kai Watch 2 is shaping up nicely, as well as differentiating itself from Pokémon in several key ways. Though this one isn’t for me, they will also have Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.

The real draw for me will be the Nindies on display, which is always an eclectic mix of games. Those will include Punch Club, Runbow Pocket and World to the West (by the incredibly talented Rain games, of Teslagrad fame)! For those not able to make the show, they will also have Nindies@Night before PAX, allowing fans to try out several great games at the EMP in Seattle. And last but not least, they will have the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition hardware on display, for fans of classic goodies. All in all, PAX West is shaping up to be another great year. Stay tuned to oprainfall for exclusive hands on demos and coverage from the floor show!

Capcom has shared more profiles on the cast of characters set to appear in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. Previously, we learned more about Phoenix Wright’s assistant Maya Fey, in addition to the Khura’inese tour guide and monk-in-training Ahlbi Ur’gaid.

This time, we get a look at the returning characters of Athena Cykes and Apollo Justice, as well as new characters Nahyuta Sahdmadhi and Roger Retinz.

First off, Apollo is described by his profile as having an “unbreakable spirit and a relentless need to find the truth of every case.” He also possesses a special bracelet that contracts around his wrist during critical moments, indicating to him that he must focus on peoples’ words and actions to detect if they are telling the truth. In Spirit of Justice, Apollo must defend Phoenix Wright’s daughter Trucy when she is convicted of a murder.

The prosecutor in that very same case, however, is Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, a devout monk from the Kingdom of Khura’in who is licensed to practice law internationally. His profile describes him as claiming to be able to see the “karmic flow” of a trial and, like many of the people from Khura’in, he holds a profound dislike for lawyers.

Next, we get a look at returning character Athena Cykes, a young attorney who is eager to learn and prove herself. She first appeared in Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies where her super-sensitive hearing often came in handy. In Spirit of Justice, Athena will have to assist Apollo in his case defending Trucy.

Lastly, the character profiles give us a look at a new character, Roger Retinz. Roger is a television producer who appears to be an easygoing guy and is hardly ever seen without his cup of coffee. However, when something goes awry on the set of his latest production (a magic show featuring Phoenix’s daughter Trucy), Roger deflects all blame and instead directs responsibility for the death of a stagehand onto Trucy herself.

To read the entire character profiles for Apollo, Nahyuta, Athena, and Roger you can visit Capcom’s official blog here and here.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice will release digitally for the Nintendo 3DS on September 8th.

Capcom has shared another development blog for the upcoming 3DS title Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. In this latest blog, we hear from a few members in charge of visual design and special effects.

First off, UI designer Reiko Nakano gives us a glimpse at what it was like having to create different fonts for the game. In Spirit of Justice in particular, the game needed two very different styles for the UI to help set apart the designs for the trial sections which take place in two separate countries.

Next, Chieko Akizuki shared a bit about her role as the lead effects artist in Spirit of Justice. In the game, trials which take place in Khura’in are conducted by a Divination Séance. An important aspect of this rite is the Pool of Souls in which a person’s last memories are channeled. Initially, however, Akizuki notes that they had various ideas regarding how to play out a victim’s final memories, including having the person’s spirit possess a puppet. In the end, they decided upon a pool of water, which led to Akizuki having to research many bodies of water to get the right idea of how to recreate the effect of water into the style of Ace Attorney.

To read more about both Nakano’s and Akizuki’s work in Spirit of Justice, you can go visit Capcom’s official blog.
