Yeah, they do which is surprise because like everyone has said, there has been no advertisement.

I mean, the two trailers that were released barely made it into the theatres. When they showed up online, no one made fuss. And yet, the tracking numbers say that there is a definite interest in seeing Pirates (68%) while Superman Returns is 42%....

cmill,

I hope you're right. I personally don't want Episode III's opening day number to fall to Captain Jack Sparrow....

I keep forgetting that Superman will be going into it's second weekend....which will be made up of people who stayed away from the opening week of the film.

I think geek wars are sad and I've said this many times on this message board. I wouldnt want to associate myself with someone who takes the moviegoing experience that much when its meant to be a form of leisure. I dont see why people cant enjoy all the films and not be concerend about the profit but that's what happens when grown-ups with kid mentalites clash. As adults they discuss stuff like the studio profits but geek out like little children

The thing with Pirates is because it's a good shallow ride with good characters it's great and that's something that can be rare because studios try a little too hard when it comes to blockbuster they focus too much on either a story or effects and there's that imbalance and POTC had that balance and was accessible to the masses.
It's like with Batman Begins, some have said that it's pretty unspectacular comapred to other films in it's genre like Spider-man and X-Men 3 but it maks up for wow effect special effects with a solid simple story with fitting characters. Pirates fits that mold for the family action blockbuster. It's not patronising, story's straightfoward and people like Jack Sparrow are charismatic. Dont forget when the first one came out people flock to it after all the hype from oversaturated and overpromoted but overhyped and muddled Matrix Sequels ( and I loved that franchise but still) so people needed that clear refreshed alternative for the summer
Well, I found Pirates shifted the balance more towards goofiness... But that´s me.

And I´ll agree about geeks. It´s bizarre to see them arguing profits like they work for the studios or got stock in them... The Fantastic Four fanboys trying to put Batman Begins down simply cuz the movie cost less to make was crazy... Wouldnt you have preferred to get a truly epic and spectacular FF movie, even if the profit was a little smaller?

y do we care what movie does better? i'll probably end up seeing both and probably liking both. i really think the summer battle is with these 2 movies. its just like the star wars prequel up against spiderman. they both did well, one just a little better than the other. they're just movies. its not like anyone of us worked on them. if so then you have a valid argument.

I love how when a semi-negative review comes in, everyone wants to discount that review as fast as possible. Face it, the movie is goin' to get some negative reviews, Batman Begins did also. All the problems mentioned in the IGN review are things that the common poster has feared - does that mean this review is wrong? No. Does it mean it is right? No. It is just another review, the only difference is this one didn't bow down and sing the praise of this film.

And if you're a "film buff" - you'd know IGN has a movie section. IGN is a HUGE site.

The argument about PoTC and SR is pointless. Different genres and audiences.

POTC will appeal to women and families more than anything. Superman Returns will appeal to a big demographic, but women and the average family it won't. POTC covers all bases, while Superman Returns tries to - but doesn't.

With the "journalists", they're trying to be the first to say "I told you so..." when it comes to this two films, especially Superman Returns.

Returns, to me, seems to be the wildcard. For some odd reason, everything since day one thought that the sequel to Pirates was going to be spectacular. The question always was "What will Superman be like?" "Will it fly today or do the audience even care about him?"

It's just rather interesting to see sides being drawn not only with the "fanboys/geeks" but with the "professional journalists/critics/online critics"....

Reall the next three weeks will be interesting. It's pretty much clear that X3 has failed. Critically -- it near-tanked. Box office numbers were mainly driven by having a memorial day open, a hugely successful (finanically and critically) two films before it, and a rather inudating marketing campaign. 47% of its Box Office came from opening numbers, which is in no way indicative of the film's quality since word-of-mouth hadn't gotten around yet. And since then, word-of-mouth has been pretty piss-poor, a carry over from the very "meh" reviews preceding its release.

Now, Pirates and Superman both have things going for it and against it. Going for Superman: highly capable director, solid marketing, huge name recognition, and an almost unrealisitc amount of positive, lauding, enthusiastic reviews. Pirates has: Depp, more recent memory, and opening later.

Now, remember, Superman Returns will also have the beneift of the Fourth of July weekend crowds. The Fourth falls on a Tuesday, pushing it closer to Superman's weekend of June 30th, rather than Pirates of the following. Actually, Pirates' date is pretty stupid if you ask me, considering that Superman will have an entire weeks time to basically trample it before moving on to its second weekend.

In terms of film quality, I have no doubt that SR will be the better film by long shots. As J. Howlett said, I am of the mind that Pirates 1 is totally overrated. It's no better -- IMO -- than a movie like Sahara.

In the end, if we must make a battle, I think SR will be the breakout of the summer. The hype for it was virtually non-existent (if not negative) until about a week and a half ago. Now, it's rolling on like a freggin' freight train and something tells me when this film breaks, it's going to be malestorm of positivity and excitement and surprise.

WELL SAID

X3 got 3 stars
SR got 3.5 star

So their reviews are indeed spot on.

I crack up everytime I read a reviewer ***** and moan about Routh's and Bosworth's age. "OMGWTFBBQ it's supposed to be a sequel to teh Donner films, but why they so young??!!11 LOLZ"

Idiots.:down

It's "Batman Begins is a prequel" all over again.

I just wish people would do their homework (among other things, like using common sense). Yeah, let's cast an older Supes and a Margot Kidder look-alike. Sequels, you say? We'll worry about that when the time comes!

Yeah, we all saw how well Kidder aged. :o

Yeah, SR has the July 4th weekend which is huge... And as I said before, does the GP know when Pirates is coming out? Their marketing has been piss poor.

IGN has the same amount of credibility when reviewing movie as John Kerry had when running for President.......zero!

SR will have more chances to beat POTC2, if only POTC2 looses legs.

But POTC2 also can be very huge.

If SR wins, then...

SR
Domestic: $335m
Foreign: $388m
Worldwide: $723m

POTC2
Domestic: $289m
Foreign: $431m
Worldwide: $720m

But if POTC2 wins, then...

SR
Domestic: $315m
Foreign: $386m
Worldwide: $701m

POTC2
Domestic: $355m
Foreign: $478m
Worldwide: $833m

While SR has more huge marketing and fanbase, POTC2 has Johnny Depp and it is fresh.

As for reviews, I think SR will be better movie than POTC2. Pirates will also be very good movie, butn not great like SR.

So my predictions for RT results are so:

SR
Critics - 88%
Cream of the Top - 82%
Users - 91%

POTC2
Critics - 84%
Cream of the Top - 74%
Users - 96%

Just as i what i thought anyways superman returns didn't live up to the hype according to ign just check out there non bias review of the film.

http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/713/713350p2.html

Seems like batman begins is still crowned as the best superhero film ever.

P.S. Just in case if you guys were to start bashing on ign because of it's comments towards superman returns review just know this in mind over 8million people visits www.ign.com everyday.

LOL, it's pretty obvious where you're coming from and what you're trying to do here, bud. Batman Begins was great, but show me this crown that supposedly adorns it's head indicating it's title of being "best superhero film ever".

Not that I take a place that primarily reviews video games seriously.

poor CHUD...

Batman Begins had far too many problems with it to be crowned best superhero film ever. I'd still rank Unbreakable and The Incredibles above it.

that's not at ALL my point in posting.

Firstly, this thread is the definition of redundant considering this review is already being talked about in the Official Review thread

Secondly, negative reviews get consideration just fine on the site

Thirdly, the writers on the movie section at IGN really do suck. They really, really do. They're not good at it, at all. They're good at writing walkthroughs, but not movie reviews.

I'm not trying to discount the negative reviews, as I myself HIGHLIGHT some of the concerns that pop up in reviews (which would be discerned if people visited the Official Review thread instead of puking up, ADD-style, a brand new thread everytime they trip over a paragraph on the internet) i'm trying to discount IGN as a site worth reading when it comes to film criticism. Because they suck at it.

This isn't an attempt to make sure "my movie" gets protected from "big meanies" because I dont' even give a s**t about any of that. Film isnt a team-sport that I have to raise my foam finger and drink beer out of a hat to enjoy. I'm just saying, anyone trying to read IGN is in for some trouble if they like some depth and intelligence in their film writing.

If you just want fanboyism to the nth degree, unfiltered, you're better off on a messageboard.

edit: Oh s**t, Matches, man, where'd you go?

Thanks, I think.

You shouldn't have left, sucka. I miss the common sense infusion from time to time :)

Have you tried actually PM'ing a mod yet? Hit up Dew or Drakon, they're pretty receptive.

And I love how people bring this up like they're some sort of voice of reason here. Yet when you get down to it its just the other side of the spectrum. There are those who will defend this film to death and there are those who will be so critical they become negative.

Been battling with Oldguy over at the Planet. Frankly, I'm souring to the whole internet-forum-go-crazy-over-movies thing. This was supposed to be fun, not a job. :)

Starting to sound like C. Lee now.
