Official Script Discussion

Michael may or may not deal with it directly, but do the producers have a reputation for blatant product placement or does the director? Watching The Island should answer that question.

And the only G1 Transformers around are geared towards collectors, except maybe for the Classics line but they don't clash with the movie anyway (expect for a couple of characters).

this is gonna be a big summer movie...name one of those that didnt have product placement.

the point i was trying to make is that a toy maker isnt gonna put out a toy that looks like a toy they already put out...they are gonna change it up

Dude, but didn't you think the product placement in The Island was just a bit much? I'm not anti-product placement.... but, man, there are limits! He practically panned, zoomed in, and hovered over logos....

At the time, I thought it was "for a reason".... a creative "sci-fi" commenting on the consumerism in The Island's world or something like that. But, after hearing about the flagrant in-your-face product placement in Transformers as well, I'm not so sure.

I think you're placing to much authority in the writer's hands. Everything has to go past the director and if he wants something in, like dancing product placement Ipods or Flame Prime then the writers have to comply. Maybe he gives them a blank slate but there's no way the writers are making product placement deals without his knowledge.

E: Didn't see CFlash's reply.

I think that you think you know something about the film-making process as it realtes to the Hollywood machine, and you don't. The director, especially on this project is in the employ of the studio, and the Producers have more of a say in the script and product placement than he does. If he doesn't play nice and do as the studio wants he can get fired...he is an employee. Bay is not at the point in his career that he gets to call the shots.

I have made indie films, and now I work in the Hollywood Studio Machine...it is a different reality than the one you see and think you know. The people with the money call all the shots...period...end of story...

It's not the product placement that bothers me

though you shouldn't make it so obvious that it takes you out of the film

it's that you never straight out write it into a script. Instead of ipod- Mp3 player and then an ipod can still end up in the movie.

There's also too many damn product placements... Burger King, Xbox, iPod's, eBay, Yahoo, plasma TV's, AT&T, American Express... did I miss one?

didn't like that part where
the energon cube bring inanimate objects to life like that xbox that grew tiny arms and legs and that iPod that reminded me of those little creatures in "The Mummy" Returns "

The top one is a maquette and the bottom shot looks like it could be Optimus' first appearence in the film.

Bay is.

I think you might be a bit confused.

The director, no matter how "popular" is the boss. When he comes on he is the boss. The director's "vision". The producer handles buisness portions of the production. One of the first things you leanr in film school is this. I went to producer portion of it and studied that more heavily (I don't like directing people..I'd be ****ing Woddy Aleen doing a stchik if I tried I swear to God:o).

Bay can draw designs if he wants. When he came on the film became his. He can dictate to the writers. The writers have to go through him. That's what a director ANY director that knows what he's allowed to do(and Bay has made enough movies...sadly)

Hey bud...we are talking about product placement, which is the "business" side of film-making...the money people handle that and tell the director to accomodate it. I went to USC...and honestly, after working in Hollywood, I can tell you film school is a waste of time if you want to make it in Hollywood. If Bay decided to do anything radical or rock the boat against the studio's wishes he would be fired in an LA minute.

As far as product placement goes, I have no problem with it at all/ Its always better to see stuff on screen that you recognize in real life, Be it a coke or pepsi vending machine, Real brands. In order for the movie to be realistic and visceral, They need to show stuff that is familiar to us as if its our world to.

Bottom line, because it says "A Michael Bay Film" on the posters, he will catch all the blame.

i would also like to see the script. please and thanks

There are too many hands in this movie to place blame on one person.1)Bay is trying to make a movie for what ever reason he makes money. 2)Hasbro is using this movie to launch a new line of toys and energize the whole Transformers line 3)Dreamworks/Paramount is hoping this movie makes them money thur tickets and thru product placement

It doesn't matter wether we're just talking about product placement. The problem is that you're looking at every instance as being black & white when there's actually a gray area. You apparently believe that Bay would risk the sack if he demand the bean counters cut the product placement down, which is kinda laughable really. Bay has got his feet well under the table and Hasbro sold him their soul. Spielberg is another issue alltogether but Michael is the golden boy as far as he's concerned.

Now if it was a guy in lesser demand with replacements around the corner, then maybe things would be more black & white.

But that's not even my main gripe. Plenty of movies use product placement without losing the art of subtlety.

E: And don't get me wrong, I understand that other pressures should be taken into account but the point about him facing the firing squad are way off.

Sounds like they combined the matrix, the key, and victor sigma all into one.

in cast it gets missed in the other thread, pass me some of that hot PM action yo

Its interesting that
Megatron ends up being the creator of the modern civilization as we know it.

I read the first 60 pages, up to Optimus' appearance and had to stop before all the surprise was gone.

I liked it a lot. Very tense and mysterious.

I want to stear this thread - instead of creating a whole new one - to talk of the differences between the script and the cartoon. What differences do you see? Are some an improvement? Are others not?

I keep seeing the same stuff repeated by the "haters"

1. Bumblebee is a Bionicle
2. Bumblebee is not a VW
3. Bumblebee can't talk, instead he uses the radio.
4. Optimus has flames and an extended hood.
5. and now...Too much Product Placement!

That seems to be the sum total of all the haters argument. The script and a little common sense can help address the haters' complaints.

1. Bumblebee will not look like that photo you saw with the man standing in form of him. Evidence: The studio just released official pics of optimus and they blacked out his friggin' optics!!! Do you think they'd release a full-body shot of one of the main characters?
2. Bumblebee transforms himself from a 1970's camaro to a 2008 camaro in the blink of an eye. Why couldn't he have been a 1960's VW before that?
3. Bumblebee not talking does several things - gives us sympathy for the character, creates a strange unease about Sam's car, adds much needed humor, lets the audience slowly enter the world of "talking robots" and keeps the mystery of the transformers alive until Optimus and crew shows up
4. Optimus with flames and long hood gives hasbro new toy designs to sell and makes way for the return of G1 optimus in part 2.
5. You're actually moaning about product placement? The entire show was a commercial for TOYS as is this movie. How does this point escape you all???

Please haters, let your inner little kid enjoy this movie for what it is and not for what it ain't. Or if you have kids, let them enjoy it and don't ruin the experience for them.

Can anyone PM me a summary seeing as it is now gone from the net and I couldn't read it. :(
