As far as domestic goes, no other will film make as much as Spidey this year.
And I'm really happy about that. I mean Sony knows how much money that has been made ever since Spidey1 with the same cast and crew (even though John Dykstra didn't do the CGI for Spidey3). not having them for another Spidey film wouldn't be a good idea. So yes I'm really happy that Sony will be paying the right amount of money so that Sam, Tobey, and the rest of the cast and crew will returnNo question in my mind the'll do 1 more. Tobey, and Rami will not be able to turn down the money Sony will offer.
SM3 underperformed? Maybe to the fans. But the studio always projected only above $300 million. They never said 400 or more than SM2. Most likely they were targeting $330-$350 taking in the law of diminishing returns for sequels.
The surprise was it was a bigger hit overseas making it near $900 million million WW, the largest take of the trilogy. It may not have topped fanboy desires and dreams of breaking $400 million or $500 million, but it did as well as expected in the US and even better out.
Sorry but it is pretty simple for anyone to understand that here domesticly it underperformed you can pretend all you want that these number were expected but they were not and it wasn't just fan boys either. Only an idiot would think it was going to bring in 500M I didn't see anyone saying that. This movie should of easily dragged in at least 350M minimum but it won't even get that high.
Overseas however it went beyond anything that anyone could expect.
So why exactly, after bringing in someone with passion for the first 3 movies, would they bring someone totally left field without a passion for Spider-Man for the next 3 movies?
That's really unfortunate Tmag is the only actor you can see as Peter Parker. Let me ask you this, before Spider-Man was cast, who did you see as Peter Parker? Did you already envision Tobey Maguire? Because that's what you basically said in your post.
And the movie you said would get critically killed is doing pretty good so far, Transformers.
Well, I sort of agree with you, I'd like to stress it underperformed only very slightly.
Plus 300 mill at the BO is still a major hit.
I dont think that Shrek or Pirates took anything from SP3...it was the word of mouth...if that was on par with SP2,it would've made 400 in USA and 950-970 overseas...the word of mouth in USA is/was terrible,

Spider-Man 3" pulled in estimated $1 million for the weekend, pushing its overseas gross total to $548.9 million. That qualifies it as the No. 10 all-time grosser internationally, ahead of New Line/Warner Bros.' "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," which recorded an overseas tally of $547.1 million in 2001.

Don't throw around words you don't use properly. Underperform means that the studio was disappointed by it. Underperforming means while it wasn't a failure it did not live up to expectation. We're talking MI3, Superman Returns, Hulk, Fantastic Four 2, Cars, Matrix Revolutions, Grindhouse and Ocean's 13.
The movie made over $300 million dollars. It is in the elite boxo ffice juggernaut club. It made over $330 million. Yeah, it didn't reach $350 million (which was probably the high end of Sony projections) but it came right next to it.
On top of that the movie made more than expected overseas. It in fact SURPASSED expectations, making this the MOST PROFITABLE film in the franchise while decreasing on its second sequel, which is common in Hollywood (but not so common is the small % drop).
It didn't crack $350 million. Big deal. Sony is aready making the sequel. If it underperformed we'd be holding baited breath like Superman fans or FF fans. Fans just take these b.o. numbers for granted. At the end of the day it was a megahit that garunteed a sequel. Why should we care more?
Sony's "SPIDER-MAN 3," which fulfilled forecasts as it jump-started summer biz overseas, ensnared $1 million to become the 10th largest international film with $548.9 million and the 11th biggest globally with $883 million.
Not sure I recall saying it would get critically killed I just said it was gonna suck. Critics *****ed about plenty of great movies and praise all kinds of crap so not that surprised.
I didn't envision anyone for Peter Parker in the first film because I was 16 and didn't have the internet so I didn't it was coming out until it was already cast. Who do you think is a better fit?
I see what you're saying. But Sony is likely caring first and foremost about keeping the franchise going and hiring someone who will meet their deadlines and agree to their demands. Yes they hired Raimi to do Spider-Man but they've also hired MSJ to do Ghost Rider. He was a director with a vision and passon....but it was a crappy vision.
I somewhat agree with you, but I'd be weary of a new director. The reason is not many directors take projects with a 4 in the title, if the previous 3 have been defiend by a single filmmaker. You will not be seeing Alfonso Curan or Jim Cameron. YOu run a greater risk of finding a Brett Ratner or Tim Story instead.

Are you kidding me? Of course you can picture certain people fitting a part and you know I am not talking about walking around acting like them I am refering to the look.I was on these very boards when Peter Parker was finally cast. NO ONE had Tobey Maguire in mind, hell, most people didn't know who the hell he was, me included, and he turned out alright. Same thing with Osborne, who would've pictured Dafoe as GG? He did a great job.
Actors don't walk around acting like PP. All I'm saying is that you won't see a certain actor as PP, until he's cast as PP, then you'll be like, "Wow, great choice!"
So as for who I think is a better fit, I don't know, but I know there are at least 10 actors out there who can do a better job than Tobey Maguire as PP because PP is not in the least bit a hard character for any skilled actor to play.
Raimi has done a great job on these films. I never imagined I'd get 3 Spider-Man movies. But as good a job as he's done, there are directors who can do better jobs. Maybe a director that won't use CGI for the simplest shots, or a director that can show us just what super agility, speed, and reflexes 15x that of a human can really do. Maybe a director that won't have Spider-Man laying blows on Dr. Octopus without an explanation, or that will actually have the audience hate a villain so much that you can't wait for Spider-Man to defeat him, instead of having the villains cry at the end, or maybe one that will show us the wise-ass that Peter Parker really is, and the Spider-Man that villains are begging to shut up.
The Spider-Man movies are my favorite movies but these movies have SO MUCH UNTAPPED POTENTIAL that I just can't help but wonder.
And you really can't compare them hiring MSJ for GR, GR is almost a throw-away character for them.
Aloha,
The definitive Spider-Man movie, has not been made yet. When it is, it will be nominated for an Academy Award for best Picture. That's how great the material is for the character Spider-Man.
Spidey rules
Seriously, I wanted to say that at the end of my post but couldn't figure out how to get it across.
