Can't believe this comes out at the end of 2012! I wish it were releasing during the Summer, but I'm not complaining! I know the end results are going to be stunning and quality takes time.

I read LOTR when I was 9.... Okay truthfully, it took me about 3 years to read it but when I was done I started again immediately and read it again; still one of my favourites.

Didn't enjoy the Hobbit, maybe because I've only recently read it, after I fell over the +30 hill. Regardless, I'm a shoe-in for a ticket.

Evangeline Lilly Talks The Hobbit

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=82871

With her latest, Real Steel set to open this Friday, Evangeline Lilly flew back from the New Zealand set of The Hobbit to attend the Hollywood premiere. That's where Access Hollywood caught up with the former "LOST" star to talk about the upcoming epic two-part Tolkien adaptation. You can check out the full video in the player below and also hear Lilly speak a bit of Elvish!

I thought Evangeline would vanish after Lost, but she actually seems to have a career with legs.

So I'm looking up the world's longest beards.

Um. WOW.

How awesome would it have been if Gandalf and the dwarves had beards like this?

I don't think that would be epic at all. The beards they are at a fine length, how would you expect them to fight with long beards like that in their way?

Tuck them into their belts, like they do in the book.

And you know me, Hunter. I'm a giver .

While those who have beard are ok, I'm not really cool with the goateed/beardless dwarves.

Is Evangeline playing a sexy type character like Orlando Bloom's Elvish character in The Lord Of The Rings movies or will she be mostly covered up & playing a female version of Liv Tyler's character from Lord Of The Rings?

Fixed. :oldrazz:

Her character Tauriel is not in the book and has been created for the film, so we have no idea on what her role will be like at the moment. I think she will be more along the lines of Legolas than Arwen though. She will probably be a warrior in the army of Mirkwood who meets Bilbo and the Dwarves when they are imprisoned. It is highly likely that she then participates in the Battle of Five Armies later on (that way they can get her in both films if the split happens after the escape in the barrels). I really don't she her getting a romantic sub plot (at least I hope she doesn't get one. Adding her to the narrative is one thing, but giving her a brand new romantic story will just feel really tacked on).

Well given the fact that Dwarves have a couple-hundred year lifespan, you could infer that those Dwarves who have goatees/no beards are relatively youn compared to the others. If I recall correctly, Fili and Kili are the youngest (probably around 50) and Thorin is more than likely over 100, so given that his beard is fuller you can tell the age difference between them. Also, I would assume that different Dwarven cultures would have differing cultural customs in regards to facial hair/beards, which would allow for far greater diversity, especially with 13 characters to keep track of.

The only dwarves that are given specific ages by Tolkien are Thorin (195), Balin (178), Dwalin (169), Oin (167), Gloin (158), Fili (82), and Kili (77).

In The Hobbit, Tolkien states that Fili and Kili are the youngest "by some fifty years." So the next youngest dwarf is (at the very least) 132-year-old.

Now, here's an excerpt from The History of Middle-earth: Peoples of Middle-earth:

J.R.R Tolkien said:
"Dwarves remained young......until they were 30 or nearly that.....After that they hardened and took on the appearance of age very quickly. By forty all Dwarves looked much alike in age, until they reached what they regarded as old age, about 240. They then began to age and wrinkle and go white quickly.....unless they were going to be long-lived, in which case the process was delayed...."

Balin is obviously an exception to this, as he's described as "very old-looking," even at the age of 178.

As far as the beards are concerned, all dwarves are born with beards (including the women). They will trim them to keep them looking neat and clean, but they won't cut their beards off unless they've been shamed, or if they absolutely have to (like Fili in the book). If it turns out that Kili is too young to grow one in the film (hence the five o'clock shadow), then that is a departure from the source material. There's no disputing that.

The best explanation for Thorin, Kili, and Fili having short beards is that they shaved them out of shame, which is true to Tolkien's text.

I'm expecting one in December with either Sherlock Holmes or The Adventures of Tintin.

Always good to see a direct quote from Tolkien himself. I was a little off about the exact ages but no matter.

Completely forgot that Dwarves are actually born WITH beards, that was most certainly in the Appendices to LOTR. At this point I'd agree then that Kili's lack of beard is both a complete departure and a matter of convenience for Jackson as a director, with 13 dwarves to keep track of.

Then again as Tom Shippey would say, this is "Tolkien as interpreted by Jackson."

I understand the need to diversify the looks of the Dwarves, I just disagree with the exact choices they made.

You don't think that's too early for a trailer? Early 2012 sounds about right.
Not at all. A lot of high-profile films lately have teaser trailers one year prior to their releases.

Sherlock Holmes is WB's tentpole film for the winter, and Tintin was produced by Peter Jackson. Either film would be too good of an opportunity to pass up.

They released an online promo trailer for The Lord of the Rings on April 27, 2000, more than a year before the movie actually came out.

And they released a complete official trailer a little later on in the same year.

So, releasing a trailer a whole year before it actually is released is not entirely out the question.

Hobbit crews to hit the road in convoys

Hobbit fans, it looks like we've got us a convoy - a couple of them, in fact.

Two convoys, each of about 200 vehicles, will leave today from Sir Peter Jackson's Stone Street Studios in Miramar to transport vital gear for location filming.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said it had been made aware that one fleet of 200 vehicles, mainly smaller trucks with caravans, but also some bigger trucks, would head to Hamilton for location shooting at Hobbiton in Matamata. The other convoy is off to Queenstown.

It is possible to shoot at different locations at the same time because there are two Hobbit production units, one led by Sir Peter and the other by Andy Serkis.

Hobbit publicist Melissa Booth declined to comment about the production going on the road.

But the permit given to production company 3 Foot 7 to film in Matamata was for filming rights lasting no more than 15 days before November 8.

The production firm has also sought consent to shoot at Paradise, near Glenorchy, Tucker Beach and Queenstown Hill.

There would be a "slow buildup" in film activity from October 3, with the busiest period from November 14 to 22, the application to Lakes Environmental said.

Shooting is also scheduled to begin on Mt Ruapehu on November 6. Consent had been given to film in Tongariro National Park in specific areas on the west side of the mountain.

There is also speculation in Te Kuiti that The Hobbit will visit town early next month.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14 next year. The second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is due for release on December 13, 2013.
