Maybe he died before Ragnarok and we never heard about it. Dude only appeared in like 2 or 3 issues, ever.

That would be awful.

Says you. I'm tired of all this battle for the throne crap. We've been doing it for 20 years now.

And why would I believe that every other God was resurrected and NOT the most powerful God in the Norse Pantheon? It's illogical.

You said you're reading the Journey Into Mystery stuff right now... aren't you diggin' the stuff where Thor is unfettered by all this Courtly Drama crap? I love a good courtly story but it really needs to resolve itself. I think the readers are fatigued by it.

I want the Thor that is like Odysseus or Hercules.... traveling the 9 Worlds and adventuring. Not the Thor that's wondering which goblet will have the poison in it.

I just want a change of pace. Even if it's going back to basics.

You mean the stuff where Thor can't even be happy with Jane Foster because he's too much of a ***** to stand up to his overbearing father? Yeah, I'm loving that.

Odin's not needed. Thor is his own man and all bets are off now that the throne is anchored securely to Odin's butt. I love political intrigue that Odin's death created and the King Thor Saga is one of my favorite periods in Thor's history. Just because something existed for a long time, doesn't automatically make it better than what we've got now.

And anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back the adventurous Thor now that he's exiled. That's why I want Balder to remain on the throne. Thor definitely works better as the protector of Earth, free to roam around and fight his own battles, but a leader who's not universally acclaimed and considered infallible also creates a nice background for Thor's world. Plus, it finally gives Balder his due. Dude's been shoved into the background for decades at a time and the last time he was actually important, Loki winds up killing him for treason. I like Thor as the noble hero and Balder as the troubled leader. Odin would only throw a wrench into the works for both.

Besides, you already know why Odin never came back: he died before Ragnarok and thus wasn't subject to the mass-resurrection that Thor performed specifically for the victims of Ragnarok.

While we're all talking about Odin's place in the Thor mythos.... what do we think about Robert DeNiro playing him?

The latest rumor is that DeNiro has joined Branagh's Thor film, and while it's a stretch, Odin is about the most likely part I could see DeNiro playing, IF this proves to be anything other than BS.

Uh... not the first actor I'd think of. Or the fiftieth. But, you know, he's De Niro. He can play anything. I figured Stellan Skarsgard would be the guy to play Odin when he was cast.

No Vidar died during Ragnarok. He was shown dead in a Field of Spears.
Yeah sure he was only in a few minor cameo parts but still, he's a son of Odin it should be covered somewhere somehow to at least answer what and where he is like so many other Asgardians we haven't seen yet.

That's a rumor tho KS. Ain't it cool had something on it and I really don't think DeNiro would be in it nor Jude Law as mentioned in that same rumor.

Why not? With a relative unknown as the lead it NEEDS big names in supporting roles.

And I don't think Thor is beneath De Niro or Jude, they have been in utterly atrocious films in the past.

Oh I'm just saying I don't think it would happen. Deniro would make a GREAT character villian. I'm just not trusting that rumor.

Yeah, I said in another thread that it's a rumor that should be taken with a heaped handful of salt. But it'd be cool if it was true. :yay:

I just don't see Branagh following through on the coup of getting DeNiro by casting him in a walk-on part.

Haha, reminds me of someone on another board. They were defending the choice of Jackie Earle Haley as Sinestro, responding to someone pointing out his lack of major roles, and with no sense of irony, said:

"There are no small roles, only small actors."
