But this is MMA. Sometimes, a storyline is more important than who deserves what. If they didn't have the Edgar rematch, they would have no other viable contenders to fight Henderson. Miller/Diaz are tied up, and they're probably not going to have Henderson wait for the winner. There's Melendez, but he's trapped in Strikeforce due to the restructured Showtime deal. So, you're left with the imminently marketable Henderson/Pettis 2 fight. It's not always fun to admit it, but this is prize fighting after all.

Oh Melendez. If he was in UFC it would be the easy fight to make between him and Bendo, but damn contracts keep him in Strikeforce. You can tell he really doesn't like his situation either.

Oh, he absolutely hates it. But he's a great team player, and he's making the most of it. He was great on commentary during the Thomson/Noons fight last Saturday. He could have been bitter and let that slip through, but he was professional, which I respect. The two fights to make for him right now are a third fight against Thomson (yuck), or a fight with Pat Healy. The Healy fight would be decent, but it's not going to help Melendez' profile grow any. It's a lose-lose fight for him, which is basically all he faces in Strikeforce now.

They're probably going to make the Thomson fight though, which should be pretty one-sided. Things can always go differently in MMA, but I think Thomson is just too broken down now, and too far removed from active competition.

If Melendez doesn't like his situation he only has himself to blame. He re-upped with Strikeforce instead of pursuing UFC.

He probably thought after ZUFFA bought the company he'd be given everything on a silver platter. Doesn't work that way.

Unless you're a former pro wrestler. Or you talk a lot of trash. Sucks for Melendez. All he has is his amateur wrestling and respectful attitude.

All those heavyweight fights, and none of them look to be the sloppy kind.

This is nonsense. Melendez signed with Strikeforce. And then he re-signed.

If he's upset about it, it's his fault. Reap what you sow. He decided to go with Strikeforce.

And you want to know why? In Strikeforce you can be a big fish in a smaller pond. I'm not saying Melendez isn't great. But he was able to dominate a much smaller talent pool. Look at lightweight in the UFC. Deepest, most competitive, shark infested pool in MMA right now.

So Melendez was smart at the time. He made his name in Strikeforce by being the big fish in a smaller pond and wanted to turn that into making himself a top contender in the UFC. It didn't work out that way though.

Man, UFC 146 is going to be awesome! Can't wait.

I just got invited for a set visit to UFC Tonight later this month. Pretty exciting :D .

so Velasquez can get starched in 60 seconds and next fight is a #1 contender's fight lol

yeah that makes sense

He did have the belt last, since he didn't get a rematch right away he deserves to be close to a title shot at least.

Personally for me I think Velasquez lost too badly to Dos Santos to get a #1 contender matchup in his very next bout. The guy got knocked out cold, it wasn't like this was a TKO or submission after a back & forward fight.. it was a KO after I believe less than 1:30 into the first round. It wasn't even close.

They should have just had the fight, if Mir wins he should get a title shot, but if Velasquez wins then he should have to fight at least once more before getting a shot at title.. Werdum perhaps.

I don't really like Mir, but I hope he wins because he is far more deserving of a title shot than Velasquez at this juncture.

Cain gets a number one contender match for two reasons.

1. The heavyweight division is weak, and it is thin as hell. There really aren't that many top guys out there to make a decent ladder. If JDS beats Overeem he'll already have beaten all the top guys except the winner of the Strikeforce tourney and Mir. You could have him fight Werdum again, but he'd tear him apart again too.

2. The winner of the Strikeforce tourney probably won't be ready in time to fight the winner of JDS/Overeem. When you think of it in regards to time it should line up perfectly with both fights happening in May. I have a feeling that there is some contract stuff that might delay the winner from getting into the UFC as quickly as we'd want them to.

---------------------

As for Velasquez, if he beats Mir, then he should get the number one contender spot. It doesn't matter how badly he got knocked out. It could have gone just as badly for Dos Santos if Cain would've gotten the takedown. The fact is Velasquez got caught. It happens to everybody.

Velasquez is the former champion and he's 7-1 in the UFC. Mir is on a three fight winstreak and he's won 4 of his last 5 fights. Who ever wins this fight is the rightful top contender IMHO.

Any of Rampage's friends, hide all his keys immediately:

“Well I’m hoping the @ufc just let me go so I can do my thang, they took my love of fighting after the Forest fight! #bloodtypeBpositive,” Rampage tweeted. “I can fight better fights n a diff show!”

I saw that last night and felt so bad for the guy. Damn the ref just kept letting it happen. How much longer did the guy need to stop that? What's funny is on TUF about 20 minutes after this happen is Mazzagatti stopping a fight a little too slow and Dana saying that they call him 45 Minute Massagatti.

Rampage is just one of those guys that doesn't take responsibility for anything. It's everyone else who is the problem instead of him. I've been a Rampage fan for 7 years, but the man is always disappointing in terms of his attitude. It's why he hasn't gotten a knock out in so long. He doesn't want to work to set it up. He just swings and expects the opponent to just be there so that his fist lands, then when they move they're not being "real fighters."

Now it's the UFC's fault that they took his love of fighting away. Even though they didn't let Forrest win the fight. Even if they still took him back and paid his bail after his meltdown after that fight. Even though they have hyped him up like crazy and paid him a ton. Even after still giving him a title shot although he lost to Rashad, and not making him do a rematch with Machida since he personally thought he lost the fight when the decision was announced. It's all their fault now.

Rampage is a funny dude. That's why he's easy to like, but he's pretty immature as well. I hate how he's just let his skills go to waste. Part of it is getting old, but it's like he doesn't even try anymore.

Vicious!

Man, Page is one of the biggest babies in MMA. He needs to get the hell out of here. Didn't the UFC help him out when he went all suicidal after losing the belt to Forrest?! I've never liked him and I'm losing respect for him as a person. He can't take criticism on the way he fights and he's hoping he gets paid more?! For what?! To box and lose?!

That ref should be fired and never allowed to ref again.

I also hate fighters that don't know when a guy is done.

This guy could fought smart and really send a message if he stopped without the ref telling him too. Everyone knew the guy was toast. We don't need some dumb ref to tell us that. If that guy recognized it, it would have been very honorable.

Tate Wants A Rematch - Feels She Can Beat Ronda
Mar 12, 2012 - No fighter plans on becoming a fixture on someone else's highlight reel, especially in the smoldering fog of a grudge match.

So when former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate found herself befalling the same fate as seven other women before her, trapped underneath Ronda Rousey with her left arm dangerously close to snapping in two, the thought of tapping seemed somewhat ludicrous. Only when there was no other option did finally she relent, handing Rousey the victory and the belt.

Tate's mangled limb was a shocking image for viewers witnessing from home -- the footage is so grisly, weeks later her family members still refuse to watch it -- but would "Takedown" have called it quits sooner if it was anyone else on the planet wrenching her arm from its socket?

"It's possible," Tate admitted on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour. "Obviously I knew (the risk) going into that. It didn't catch me by surprise. A lot of people say, like Bryan (Caraway), ‘you're crazy. How did you not tap to that?' I think because I was prepared for that mentally. Not that I was ever planning on being there, but I knew that if I got into that position, I just knew it was a realistic possibility, and so I was prepared.

"I felt my arm go in, and I was like, ‘you know, I don't want to tap.' And I didn't. So I felt my hand touch the back of her thigh and I knew everything was really bad. I just didn't know at that point. I didn't feel there was a way out of it. I had idea how much longer there was on the clock and it just felt like things were getting worse and worse. And I was like, ‘I just don't know how much of this my arm can take.' I think that's when common sense started to settle in, rather than pure stubbornness."

Tate was lucky to have come to that realization when she did. The extent of the damage done to her is arm is still in question, but despite the gruesomeness of the contortion, x-rays have shown there to be no broken bones. The 25-year-old Tate is currently waiting on MRI results to determine if surgery is required, but she is "pretty sure" she has torn ligament towards the inner side of her elbow. Though if you saw her walking around, beside some slight swelling and bruising, it'd be hard to tell the difference.

As for the question of if the former champion would handle the finish differently in hindsight, Tate was noncommittal. However, she made it exceptionally clear that she wouldn't fall for the same trick twice if given the chance.

"I, personally, would love the opportunity to have a rematch," Tate protested. "I think at a high level, it takes one mistake. Anyone can make a mistake at any moment and someone's able to capitalize on that.

"I don't feel that Ronda proved anything other than what she's already (proved) -- that she has one thing that she's great at. Really phenomenal at. But everything else, I could beat her. Give me another shot. I think it was competitive. I think for the most part I was probably winning. And I think at a competitive high level, one day one person could beat the one person, and the other day the other person would beat the other person."

While the bad blood between both women clearly still lingers in the air, Tate did offer a salute of respect to her rival, acknowledging that what Rousey had done in a short amount of time was relatively remarkable. Surprisingly, Tate also picked Rousey to defeat Sarah Kaufman in her upcoming title defense, explaining that Kaufman's style plays right in Rousey's strengths.

Ultimately, however, Tate understands that despite their differences, both she and Rousey are in the same boat, fighting the frustrating uphill battle to gain respect for women's MMA. And in that regard, with reports of 506,000 viewers tuning in to watch the most heavily-hyped women's match since 2009, Tate believes they succeeded.

"I wanted to go out there and I wanted to make a very bold statement," she concluded. "I'm not just a cute girl. I'm not here to be cute for the camera. I wanted to show that women's MMA is legit. We come out there and we fight very, very hard.

"We can definitely carry the main event. We can definitely draw the numbers. We can definitely entertain, and we're also really skilled. And I think that, in the big picture, we accomplished that."
