Is there a particular reason why Rebecca Romijn could do the full make-up session for the greater part of 7 years (three films) and Jennifer Lawrence can't?

Probably because Lawrence has a lot more bargaining (and star) power than Romijn. If she doesn't want to sit for 7 hours in makeup (which honestly is ridiculous no matter who plays Mystique), she doesn't have to.

It's not like Romijn was over the moon about it either - she also said it was terrible.

It's been said that Jennifer was having skin/allergic reactions from the paint. But it also seemed like they didn't know WTF they were doing in that film when it came to make-up. Also See: Beast.

I think I recall that the Mystique process was really bad during X1 and the paint made Rebecca really sick as well. They improved it a lot for her for X2 (different paint, faster application). With Jennifer, it's probably just better technology for cleanup in post that allowed for her to use a suit. That and a more demanding shooting schedule.

Creases or no, it still looks better than the atrocious makeup in First Class.

it is so not the creases or bodysuit that is the problem. Its a significantly more cartoonish artificial blue than what was used in past films. Also the detail and placement of the scales on the face has been simplified (in a bad way) which combined with the too blue color makes it look tacky.
Plus the wig looks less well made than past ones (the front rooting).

The whole makeup job looks inferior as if it were done many years ago, while the old makeup looks better and advanced. Such a shame. No turning back now though eeeek

True. The violently blue color is pretty garish, and the front lace on that wig is subpar.
But with a cast this big, money had to be cut somewhere.

I just realized on one of the pics that you can see where the scales were ****ing sown in....
I. Can't. And. I. Won't.

It's bad enough the trailer proved this was WOLVERINE (and the x-men) 5... But I still feel cautiously hopeful that it will turn out ok. First Class and The Wolverine turned out pretty good.

I really think the internet (social media in particular) is killing films. people want to know so much detail and it is making people look far more into little things that they would otherwise not notice.

There's still so much work that needs to be done and it's Jennifer Lawrence who's playing a main character. I'm sure they'll make her look phenomenal and not cheap or tacky.

People did find the make-up job from FC pretty bad. Even the same people that are agreeing with your post that I'm quoting. So I don't get the complaint of the complaint.
