The Dark Knight Oldman thinking about retirement

Hands down the best choice for Jimbo!
Hope he makes at least 2 Bat movies more before he retires. Great actor.

this is a sensationalist thread. sounds like something the british media would do.

come and work for the mirror/sun/star. you'll fit right in.

Technically, Michael Caine is "retired" too. He only comes out for films he REALLY can't say no to: The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Children of Men...other than that he's not really working, not like he used to. Will Oldman do this? Or full on retirement like Sean Connery? No one knows.

I hope he is Gordon as long as we can have him.

Have him finish up as Gordon and Sirius Black than he can retire. The guy just needs some vacation time and a little R&R.

He's signed for three films.

Can he nullify that contract?

He'd have to pay some form of compensation - a penalty, if you will - to get out of it.

Or he could fake his own death and move to Panama.

...and the huge sh1tstorm they wrathed upon Cooper once he said he thought the script didn't meet his standards. :o

I didn't hear the big deal about this at the time. Using the word standards was incredibly un-PC but having now seen the movie I would agree with him. Not a movie for him. Not liking a script is the basic reason for every sought after actor that turns down a role. They either don't comment about it or lie to be polite.

Cooper is a ridiculously good actor. Ever since reaching "that" point in his career, I'd say after American Beauty broke, he has had an amazing record of choosing roles that have allowed him to continually step up his critical success. The guy knows what hes doing. From the roles he has chosen, I would say his motivation is to be as absolutely truthful to life as possible. I imagine he has always had very high minded artistic ideals. I just doubt he ever could have gotten inside a comic book character, no matter the quality of the script. In fact if I were to hear today that he would be playing Jim tomorrow I'd probably be having thoughts of "selling out" itching at the back of my mind. Maybe not the exact term I'd be thinking but I'm making a point.

Oh, and the hilarious thing about the SW Prequels is, all of the actors are actually good when they're not in SW. :o

Lucas weaves a tremendous story with Star Wars but he is notoriously bad with dialogue. Have you ever seen the guy talk to real humans in interviews? Its no wonder his on screen portrayals of human interaction look off to the rest of us. Also IMO the box office of his movies doesn't match the quality of his directing. I think his shoddy directing has a lot to do with why fans cite Empire, one he didn't direct, as the best of the series.

That being said, Hayden Christansen does need some acting classes.

I hate actors who say this. its not as if he works 9-5 5 days a week in a backbreaking job he has the luxury of sitting back in his mansion with his pick of scripts he can act whenever an interesting film comes along actors never really "retire".

Moving from job to job, no real career stability, spending extended periods of time away from home and family, working very irregular hours...it's very cushy indeed. It's not ditchdigging, but it can still be very hard on a person.

Hold the phone. Let this single tear run down my cheek. :woot:

Acting in films doesn't even begin to approach "work". Work, real work, like the kind most of society has to do, involves blood sweat and tears. What real work certainly does not include is paid first class travel, paid first class lodgings, and 6, 7, or 8 figure paychecks. Absolutely stupid money makes every other... "inconvenience" is the only word soft enough that I can think of, acceptable. Limitless education opportunities for you and your kids, no more health care concerns, or orthodonture bills, or broken down cars, or worrying about affording the holidays, etc etc. The things people who actually "work" have to worry about. If I had to spend a grand total of say 5 years aways from my family to provide that for them I'd do it in a heartbeat. Thats more like hitting the lottery than working.

I think Oldman will fulfill the needs of the franchise characters he has started. He wont take a ton of difficult projects for awhile. His kids will grow up. He gets bored 10 years down the road and comes roaring back with some grizzled old villain role that makes everyone go, "Wow! I remember he was great in this and that and the other... Has this guy ever won an Oscar? No? How did we miss that? Time for a makeup Oscar!"

And I think its complete bull**** when any actor acts as if they don't care about the Oscars. The Oscars are the highest acknowledgment from the most important market of a worldwide obsession.

Guess you're not familiar with any of Hayden Christensen's other films...

What do you mean? I thought he was excellent in Life as a House and in Shattered Glass.

Gary "well he moonlights as a low-level enforcer" Oldman CANNOT retire and that is that.

Well, I always agreed with something that Christopher Lee had said in a webisode of "SW: Episode 3 making of". He said that when you are an actor and love it, there should be no such thing as retirement. You die on stage or on set. In his own words "It's for life. For life".
If Oldman is tired of his profession, what can I say... I wish him well.

Well, it's a sad day indeed. It seems that the movie gods are calling time on my all-time favourite actor, Gary Oldman's career (can't you guys take Lindsay Lohan instead?) after he hinted that he is pretty close to quitting acting, because his love of the craft has 'withered'.

This isn't an official announcement, but it stills sends a real chill down my spine.

Oldman said "I've had a great career and I'm very lucky to do what I do. But I've been doing it a long time and you can get tired. You might say I want to change careers or to do something else."

What do you guys think this means for Gordon? I hope we get Oldman for at least the trilogy. Anybody know how many he's signed for?

Oldman is signed on for Nolan's 3 Batman movies.

very sad news. first it was Spacey, now Oldman :(

first fans panicing about spacey now oldman?

of course he will finish the 2 movies. he respects nolan.

it just isnt that DB. Spacey and Oldman are one of the best actors of their generation. its a big loss of talent in Hollywood if they are considering retiring from films, specially neither of them are anywhere near retirement age.

Technically, Michael Caine is "retired" too. well Spacey mentioned that when he retires from films he wants to concentrate on theater. Oldman seems to be echoing the same sentiments. either this is a creative way of looking for a raise or the resurgence in British theaters is drawing the top talent out of Hollywood.

indeed.

if I never saw spacey on screen again, i'd be a happy man. he's an overbaked dork on screen
Any man with Seven, The Usual Suspects, American Beauty and Superman Returns on his CV is AOK with me.
Married to Uma Thurman? The sly dog, never knew that
Yeah, she was about 18.

he can be repalced
just like any one else
remember katie holmes
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!!!!!!!!

who the hell wanted her back for TDK?:whatever:
Wesyeed. He loves her.

word is he's signed for 3 bat-pics. i've yet to see someone cite it and I'm still waiting :cwink:

Thanks for bringing this up SS. I hear quite a lot of people on here mention how Oldman is signed for 3 films. Can someone point me to an article where this is confirmed? I've read that Bale and Caine are signed for 3 films but heck, the 3rd film for those two could end up being a JLA film for all we know.

I wouldn't worry about this so much, as I doubt Oldman disrespects Nolan ;)

What's up dude? Not too sure where they have been, I think Miranda has been hanging out in the BOF boards. I'm probably gonna start limiting my visits to this forum as I really don't want too many things spoiled.

i would if I could but I'm addicted to spoilers. I convince myself by saying "we've waited long enough for this rebooted franchise so i should help myself to any and all info before the release"
