Warning: This thread is about religious.

Ok.... I'm Christian who believes in Jesus. There is one thing that bothers me a lot.

"Why the World doesn't need a savior": That bothers me A LOT. Why did Bryan Singer put some religious in Superman Returns?

Really, IMO... Superman is not Jesus Christ. I'm really disgusted with this. No offense. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE, HUGE fan of Superman but he is not Jesus Christ.

The other day, I saw a recent issue of ocmic book,it has Superman with RED ANGELS up in the sky. That pisses me off. I'm sorry, but that pisses me off and bothers me a lot. "SUPERMAN IS GOD! HE IS A JESUS CHRIST OF SAVIOR!" Geez.

Seriously, why did the creators made Superman into Jesus Christ Wanna-be? Honestly, I think it's pathetic and stupid. I ONLY believe in Jesus as always. Superman is not God and Jesus Christ.

It's not that I hate Superman Returns. I REALLY LOVED this movie a lot. A LOT.

^ You think that's bad? Just imagine if Caviezel had been cast....

;) :p :D

Just more proof that there is such a thing as too much freedom in film making... just because you can do something like force religous symbolism etc. into a story doesn't mean you have to.

This trend of too much freedom has been displayed in all the star wars prequels, the matrix sequels, king kong, and now of course the pirates and spidey sequels we've gotten. Someone somewhere has to jump in and say enough's enough when they make these movies these days.

May I ask what are you actually saying and what is actually your complaint?

I'm inclined to agree with you.

Singer was continuing the allegory Richard Donner began in '78. if you've got a problem with Superman Returns then you must have the same problem with the original film.

Hmm, *makes note of this thread*

If you are offended by the religious overtones that is not the film's problem. The general public didn't get that. The religous overtones are actually miniscule. Singer sprinkled a little bit, but it wasn't apparant unless you were looking for it. People are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

How about just focusing on the terrible acting, rediculously boring story, plot holes to drive a semi through, Spacey looking bored the entire movie, a super kid, no action, no fights, a retread of Superman: The movie... I could go on but you get the point.

My complaint centeres around the trend to add everything and the kitchen sink into movies these days...

especially the sequels but so far I've noticed too many movies that decide to just go for broke and do too much stuff and make a movie bloated.

What happened to the days of star wars, spielberg, then james cameron with their carefully crafted movies that flow smoothly? What happened to less is more? we didn't see much of the shark in jaws because the thing wasn't working well and they went the cheap route with it? You know what? Best damn accidental decision ever made. Imagine if jaws were made today. We'd see the shark fight another shark and then do flips in the air in cgi... ****.

Yeah, Superman's been having religious allegories for decades now. It's pretty much part of his character now. No reason, in my opinion, to really b***h about it at this point. It's like complaining that Batman doesn't kill anymore.

Oh, as for the comic Wolzard mentioned--if I remember correctly, the comic isn't actually saying that Superman was an angel, it was about this crazy old lady who started to believe that Superman was an angel.

I'll just quickly point out you say religious, not specifically which religion or which messiah...

That's because it was painted broadly. singer used a fine pencil when drawing his comparisons.

the term "saviour" does not automatically mean Jesus Christ.
though it can refer to Jesus, the definition is "one that saves from danger or destruction." therefore, Superman is a saviour.

Well, what happened to those 70's movies days? In SR case, they are being kept. That's why you don't have Superman punching giant CGI robots.

And the Christ references are taken from STM, so again the 70's way to do Superman is still with us.

Now if you release today a movie about a killer shark and there's no CGI shark all over, pleople would be going berserk crying out 'lack of action,' 'why aren't we having lots of shark if the movie is about a shark.' etc. What happened to SR tbecause of caring more about the characters and relationships than the amount of spinning cameras and CGI.

I agree many movies (specially superhero movies and such) are taking the way of saturating the movie with stuff. SR was not the case (much to the grieve of the teen audience); that's one of the main fans' complaint.

We're not supposed to think of superman as jesus, we're supposed to see how he could be concieved as a saviour to the people of FILM'S world.

Also the "does the world need a saviour" etc etc, is a direct refference to increasing levels of secularisation in the world, not to mention issues of mass concern sweeping the globe.

I love threads like this. I always laugh when people see Jesus in Superman when he was created by two jews.

Superman was stolen by the christians

*grabs popcorn. waits for fireworks*

...I was going to say what Man-E-toys said...so no use in repeating...

But MJD inspired me to think...wasn't Jesus Jewish?

((runs away and ducks for cover))

Heh

Man-E-Toys is correct. Superman ≠ Jesus. However, making a few allusions to Christ helps to sell the idea that this is a man that many, many people look up to for salvation. He inspires and gives hope, but he's a freakin' SUPERHERO, not the alleged Son of God.

Nobody is saying Superman is Christ. Obviously not, he's from Krypton for a start. Singer and the others are saying he is LIKE Christ.

You know Thor was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, but I'm pretty sure they're both Jewish as well. Surely they couldn't have based him on Norse mythology? ;)
