Edward Nigma hated the waiting more than anything else. While he was in the holding cell, awaiting the trial scheduled for the following Monday he was not permitted any personal effects. No books, no visitations except by his idiotic lawyer, and worst of all, no reprieve from the incessant babbling of his cell-mate: Killer Croc.
"So yah really did, eh. Popped a cop. Good for you. Always hated that slimy little twerp."
Popped a cop. Yes. He supposed he had. Nothing elegant in his actions. Nothing witty. Simply applying a bit of pressure to a lever. Like the Croc, he had made himself into a
common criminal.
"Thank you, Croc. As Cary Grant once said, 'Probably no greater honor can come to any man than the respect of his colleagues.'" He looked down at his shoes. Gray tennis shoes in a gray cell. Then he looked at the large gray man-beast in the next bunk.
"No greater honor."
"Grant the actor?" Croc smiled.
"No kiddin.'"
"No kidding, indeed."
"I got here for knocking over a little jewelry shop. And I mean I knocked it over. Heh. 'Course Bats knocked me over..."
Nigma looked again at Croc and, smiling a little smile, said
"Ah Croc, whose simple appetite, untaught to stray, His brains, renewed by night, consumes by day. He thinks, admitted to an equal sty, A graceful hog would bear his company."
"Huh?"
"Oh nothing. You will go on about your upsetting experience, won't you?"
Of course he did. Edward Nigma took the time to consider his future. At least once he was a regular inmate in Arkham he would have access to the library. Presumably as a murderer -
the murderer of one of Gothams finest- he would be moved into the solitary ward. Solitary confinement and access to books. It almost seemed more than he deserved. He looked again at Croc still demonstrating how he had ripped the wall off of the small shop. This, on the other hand, seemed decidedly worse...
