Golden Opportunity
Pros, cons, and photos. From Apocalypto to Pirates of the Caribbean II, the accomplished and varied make-ups in these six films deserve to be considered for an Academy Award. But each has something that could hold it back from nomination. “Golden Opportunity” is filled with witty, informative interviews. .

whew! you scared me there for a minute, Retch. :D

lol Retch, what a flattering nickname :p Doubtful, the make-up in X3 wasn't anything spectacular. Beast still just looked like a guy painted blue, and with the exception of the guy who breathed ash, none of the Brotherhood was top-notch.

All the hype surrounding that film, and the best it can come up with is an award for make up?

Yeah, with all the superhero movies getting oscars to best movie, this is really a shame...

Seriously, I think it would be wonderful to get a nomination. I personally think this movie really stands a chance in make up, or fx

hmm not really. Make-up isn't only how strange this person looks. I rather choose more subtle make-up than one full of creatures. If one of these movies should get a make-up nomination, it would be POTC2

it may be nominated for special effects- espaecially the phoenix destruction that was spectacular

X3 has some pretty corny effects :p but the bridge is flawless and so is DP destruction. Superman Returns and POTC are way better though.

I'm thinking more on the de-age stuff. That kind of thing is what get movies nominated... But, in the end, was that FX or make up? (I remember someone saying it was none of that)

mix of both. But, really, everyone I've watched the movie with didn't even notice it. I thought it would be something spetacular, but it's not really that great. Too subtle, any make-up could do that wihout a special software.

I liked better on Xavier, but I agree that for the regular joe it wasn't that great. But when giving oscar nominations I think they value more the breaktrough in technology than the end result (I may be wrong). So maybe they get nominated for that new method even if they could get the same with regular make up procedures.

XTLS will get drowned out by other competition like SR(superman flying was so cool...) or Pirates(which has brilliant designs....Davy Jones!!!!!)....Jeans wire work at the end is so obvious.....the Bridge sequence about the only great thing

some of the xavier de- aged shots looked fake but magneto was flawless. im no expert so i don't know what is possible in the realm of special effects

I forgot about the de-aged scene myself. I guess I could see that being nominated, because thankfully it certainly isn't getting one for screenplay! :cwink:

mmmh, I heard a lot of people complaining about Supes flying, especially Routh staring weird when taking off or landing...
Juggernaut "muscles" count as make up or costume?

when he was on the football feild with the plane and there was a long shot it looked so unrealitic it took me out of the moment. showing the space between his feet and the ground is hard to pull off. torso shots and the background moving works more for me

WHOA! OSCAR?! any acting awards? and why u so sarcastic??? theere are big time oscar potentials...ever here of Pat Stewert, halle berry? :p

The GG bridge, Phoenix destruction, Iceman Pyro battle, Storm were fantastic. The deaging effects are probably the most groundbreaking though.

An effects Oscar could be on the cards as well.

but its a summer superhero movie there is no chance. coupled with a dodgy overall movie and even talents like patrick and ian will get overlooked

lol I think if Famke got a nomination for best actress I would laugh so much. She did give the best performance of a woman in a comic book movie so far though, IMO. But...an Oscar...lol. It would be great. The first Oscar for an actress that spends half of the movie shut. :p Although, if Im not mistaken, wasn't Anna Paquin's character in The Piano mute? :p Impossible, athough I love Famke...

Spider-Man 2 and Superman won Oscars for best visual effects, Batman 89 for production design so superheros can win oscars just not in acting.Even with names like McKellen.

I think though that this year the visual effects will probably go to Pirates.(Yes, Davy Jones is CGI!)

Pan's Labyrinth will likely end up with the make-up gong, thats just my guess.

X3 did have its beautiful moments but I agree, I think Pirates 2 will take the Oscar...that movie's CGI and makeup was just beautiful and so was the movie.
