Outlaw King (Chris Pine, Ben Foster)

Wallace was
Captured and executed in 1305, whereas Bruce's rebellion didn't really fully start until 1306. So I'm not sure that we'll see him. However we will see Edward I "Longshanks." He didn't die until 1307 and Stephen Dillane (aka Stannis Baratheon) has been cast to play him here.

To clarify the timeline for anyone who doesn't know, The Scottish Wars for Independence, depending on how you want to look at it, was either two wars, or one big war separate by a brief interlude.

-The first phase, or the "William Wallace" part (as shown in Braveheart) was roughly 1297-1305.

-The second phase, or the "Robert the Bruce" part (which this movie is covering) was between 1306-1328.

One of Netflix's first feature films, it reteams the Hell and High Water team as they take on Robert the Bruce, aka the king from Braveheart fighting to take Scotland back from England.

Im just looking forward to it as I think a lot of people who aren't from Scotland only know Robert The Bruce as just the ******** who betrayed William Wallace at the end of Braveheart lol which never happened.

The very name, Braveheart, was actually taken from a name that one of Robert the Bruce’s men, Sir James Douglas to describe King Robert the Bruce, not William Wallace.

Also there's no evidence that Bruce ever betrayed Wallace, and he was FAR away from Falkirk at the time that the battle was happening.

It does seem that this movie might at least be trying to be a bit more historical accurate than Braveheart was.

Very glad this is coming out in cinemas in Scotland, particularly since I don't have netflix

It's kind of amusing that the big thing that some people want to talk about with this film is that you apparently get to see Chris's "Little Pine."

I really tried to get into this but it was a slog. The Braveheart comparisons are inevitable even if it’s a different historical figure. But that movie had a compelling cast and sense of urgency. The first half hour of this wandered aimlessly. The battle scenes are ok but weren’t memorable. Pine was fine but sometimes he had an accent and other times not.

I enjoyed this, but I wouldn't call it a great film or a classic. It's well acted, directed and I loved the brutal insanity of the final battle, but something was definitely missing with this movie. I don't know, but I think it could have been way more epic and I honestly wasn't a big fan of how the British were portrayed. Outside of Stephen Dillane as King Edward the rest of them felt so cartoony to me, especially the idiot of a son who was just a poor excuse of a villain and not menacing in the slightest. Chris Pine does a solid job acting wise here too, but his Scottish accent sounded inconsistent at times and I didn't really care much for his love interest either.

My favorite parts of this movie were easily the scenes with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I thought he was great.

7/10

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was Douglas ? I didn't even recognized him :)
Anyways, I liked the movie, good sets, good costumes, acting was fine but even my French ears noticed the accent slip from C.Pine.
It might not have been 100% historically accurate but which movie of the kind is ?

It’s ok. No memorable moments really. If you like Braveheart and historical epics you might be interested but nothing else would pull you in if you don’t.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I was shocked to find out Aaron Taylor-Johnson was playing the Black Douglas, he had no trouble with the accent.
I didn't notice any problems with Pine's accent either, being a scot myself I was ready to be quite critical, but I know folk who speak the way he did.
I'll agree it could have been longer, but they could never have done the entire war in a single film.

So I watched this and yeah.

I am actually curious now to see the longer cut. If the first trailer is anything to go by, there were whole battles that were cut out (where's my sweet shot of the horses riding out on the water?) But from what I understand the longer cut just plods along, so apparently nothing it does makes the dramatic aspects work much better. This shorter cut definitely did not feel plodding... but, it's kind of just like a chronological collection of okay scenes with some loose emotional connection but nothing ever really developed to where you can really feel it, like Robert's relationship with his brothers, or his wife, or the kid who cares for the crown, etc. We just sort of move through the story, watch Aaron Taylor-Johnson scream a lot, and then it's done.

In terms of the direction, I think MacKenzie is clearly suited to something smaller and more focused like Hell or High Water. With him trying to do the historic epic I don't know that any of it is playing to his strengths. There's a few okay actor moments (Pugh is quite good in a pretty thankless role and Pine's solid enough) and I suppose the fight scenes have a little extra panache, but overall you wouldn't think this was a director of any special merit from watching this--even though he does have a few pointless moments of showing off, like the opening long tracking shot which, I mean, I have no idea why that was the scene to be a long tracking shot, other than Mackenzie trying to announce at the beginning of the movie, "See? I'm talented." But the storytelling overall just doesn't have enough focus, momentum, and bite to it.

A very 2.5 out of 5 movie.

Should have been a 3 - 6 part miniseries.

Finally got around to watching this. Really enjoyed it. The most surprising thing I think is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I didnt expect that much intensity from him. He was brutal in that church slaughter.

He really surprised me, I had no idea it was him until someone told me afterwards.
