BAFTA 2007 thread

Devil's backbone, cronos, c'mon they are amazing, and hellboy is easily one of the best(if not the) comic book films.

You have very bad taste. What was so amazing in Hellboy?

It was copy of Pitch Black for me, bad-ass quotes and big quantity of action scenes.

Another cheap blockbuster.

For me, Batman Begins turned the quality level of comic book movies up.

It had everything: great cast, very good script, awesome cinematography, excellent editing, main characters' development and etc.

The only problem was fighting scenes. But if you re-watch car chase and train sequences, you will find that they were made well.

Eek, well hellboy had the most intriguing of characters, and had subtlety of humour that most films lack. Had a great cast also, ron perlman, JOHN HURT(greatest actor alive).

As for BB, I disagree on pretty much every point you made, predictable plot and writing, we can tell what each character is about to say, Bale just puts on a pedo voice that really comes as weak to me, development? we see angry wayne, then batman wayne, with a quick moment of remorse. And cinematography, not bad, but by no means upto the standards of Navvaro

out of curiosity, what was your opinion of 21 grams? Personalyl I hated it, was good direction around a poor story, and felt very much like a shoddy style and basis remake of his debut film, but for a different and simpler audience.

I remember enjoying it but I don't even remember anything about it, so I guess it wasn't that good since it didn't leave an impression on me at all.

Cinemaman, chill out, we're just having a discussion.

Hellboy is good but has TERRIBLE script structure, it feels like a mess watching it since it bobbels all over the place and doesnt' properly set up it's climaxes and also it has a weak boss fight :(

Not the BB argument, it's been done to death... So let's just end it there :trans:

so are you a fan of Amorros Perros? Innaritu really excelled himself ther,e one of the greatest pieces of modern cinema, gotta love those mexicans!

Also, why has sergi lopez not got a nomination:(

I'm unfamiliar with his work saddly :(

well Babel is his third film i believe, (yet to see it yet as I'm in UK), but amorros perros comes as one of the highest recommended films from me, I'll try to dig up my review of it in a sec...

AMORES PERROS

Amores Perros(Details here), took film festivals across the world by storm upon it's release, and is claimed to have been a major part of the Latin filmmaking explosion that has taken place across the globe.

Following the stories of three people living in Mexico, who's lives are interwoven together in brief moments throughout the film. Each story focuses on love in one of it's guises, and presents the audience with very different lives that are somewhat linked and show the emotion of life.

The most striking part of this film as a whole, is the narrative structure, which shows each story separately, however it gives us insights into the other character's lives at times also. This generates a fantastic level of enigma through the first half of the film. The narrative is hugely impressive and instantly sucks the audience in, however the middle story is rather weak, and pale in comparison to the others, the first being the best.

Acting is remarkable, transcending the language barrier, the cast give intense performances that convince and touch us. The characters themselves are highly three dimensional, not being narrowed into the usual categories of stereotypes, but being well constructed and made real.

Cinematography is of utter importance here, filmed without the aide of steady shot rigs, it gives the film a great deal of energy that puts the audience into the heart of the movie, making us part of the events. Within the first narrative, the movement is much more energetic, which matches the content perfectly, as does the slow movement of the camera within the second narrative.

This movie does feel like nothing else before it, generating a vast selection of emotions, with three different stories, any member of the audience would find a personal quality within one of them. However, this is also a downside, as whilst we becomes intensely attached to one character, or even two character's narratives, due to the broader spectrum, we find ourselves detached from a character and wanting the other characters to return instead. It does feel a bit like the director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, is trying to please too large an audience.

Without a doubt, Amores Perros is an impressive piece of filmmaking, deservedly sweeping up many awards. Whilst the audience will not enjoy each narrative to the same extent, there is enough in all of them to keep the viewer happy, and completely mesmerised when it comes to at least one of them. The pace of editing and cinematography are perfect for the narrative and it's structure, and is a supreme asset to anyone involved. Whether or not the Latin explosion can be attributed to Amores Perros does not matter, as this film is simply a masterpiece and an indubitably must see film.

What? The most intriguing of characters? I think Hellboy was made only for money, because it felt so. Universal just wanted to get money after so big flop as Hulk. Del Toro didn't get the main idea right. John Hurt is great actor, that's true. But I didn't see anything new in his acting in Hellboy.

How was it predictable? It was the first movie, which showed what character really feels. It gave unlimited explanation of Bruce's sctory. I haven't seen any movie, which would have the same breath yet.

Bale=weak? You must be joking. Bale gave Batman what others could even think about. He looked very closely at his character and did everything to make Bruce as real man as it can be.

Angry Wayne? Dude, have you seen BB really? Or you just try to make yourself not like this movie because of common opinion?

Cinematography was great, I doubt I would ever meet person, who didn't like cinematography in BB. Even vissual style and atmosphere of the movie looked amazing. Nolan was right to go with Blade Runner as example of how he wanted Gotham to look like.

Let's keep this away from a BB discussion, I've made my opinion clear and given sufficient evidence too many times now, anbd it loked more like chicago....

Have you seen Babel yet? I'm really into it, but it's not released over here yet:(

Not so big, I have seen only one his movie, it's Amores Perros.

Yep, Aronofsky is really a great director. His Requiem for a Dream is in my TOP15 of favorite films.

I think Pi is his greatest work, absolutely amazing, and amorros perros, what a damn good film! Truly a masterpiece, shame about that 21 grams farce but i'll stop going on about that, lol. I've yet to see the last king of scotland, but I'm really hyped about it, not usually a subject that interests me much, but this looks wonderful

Don't put your expectations too high up, you might be disappointed.

Maybe, but it's gotta be better than most of the stuff I've seen in the cinema for a while, and the concept alone is enchanting enough, but less than a week to go, so soon I'll let you know :)

The Fountain? I hope I will love it, but my most expecting movie is The Prestige, which opens here in next week.

eek, not sure what to say on that one, try to lower your hopes a bit, just enjoy the great script and forget about the rest:yay:

^^^

I found that we have very different cinematic tastes, so I have no worries.

I would have liked to have seen some nominations for The Prestige and Thank You for Smoking, but I figured that wouldn't be the case. It's cool that Casino Royale got some.
