The big headlines in the kaiju world are mostly from SDCC, but there's a handful of important notes otherwise:
- PACIFIC RIM, Guillermo Del Toro's new "giant" monster movie, generated a lot of buzz at Comic-Con this year. It is decidedly NOT a new Godzilla film, since apparently the average size of the monsters will be 20-30 feet, in other words about King Kong/Transformers scale. That doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be BIGGER monsters in the film, of course
- Speaking of PACIFIC RIM, the cast is slowly being filled out. Charlie Day of ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA is playing robot pilot "Newt," who must find a way to work with Rinko Kikuchi's character, "Mako," in order to combat this monster insurgency. One of the more interesting plot details, the language barrier, is thankfully remaining in-tact.
- Despite news breaking that David "Dark Knight" Goyer is writing the working script for Legendary's GODZILLA...the Big G's presence was sparse at the Con. A brief statement of "something coming soon" by Legendary this weekend served to pad out the studio's panel, but mostly just to remind people that a film may possibly be coming. Again, it could be months before any other news breaks, but here's hoping!
