I was wondering the same thing. I hope some sort of explanation like yours is given, otherwise Ethan is just a big ol' hypocrite.

Anyone else think for a second that Vanessa would die and she would become the bride? Caliban would've had his hands full with her.

Ethan teaching Victor how to shoot was so sweet! Then he had to turn around and insult the priest. Oh, Victor, never change. :funny:
I was just thinking "you better not kill off the best god damn part of the show." :o :oldrazz:
My guess is something turned him off from being a priest/exorcist (or whatever it is) and he really didn't want to do it but at that point, it seemed to him that it's the only option?

Victor should've just invited Caliban in and locked him with Possessed!Vanessa . You want a hot bride?! Here you go! :hehe:

That's a risky game though by Ethan though as sure enough, the priest they got in was out of his depth. Possessed Vanessa nearly had them for breakfast as well.

I do have a theory that Ethan was somehow marked or cursed. One that would make him inhuman in a way (would explain his non chalance over sleeping with a sick Bronagh). The full effects of the curse won't take effect though until he literally gives his life for another. He saved Vanessa, but by saving her he has left himself open to the more monstrous aspects of his curse.

Damn, Eva is giving master class performances in acting for this show. She's magnificent. So wtf is actually going on here, who's the big bad? Are we dealing with both Satan and Dracula or is it just one of them we're dealing with? I think it's safe to say that Ethan isn't a werewolf.
This show is grim and creepy and keeps getting better and better.

Malcom said "We may be dealing with a pantheon of devils." And venessa asked the black eyed devil "Do I have to name you again? Are you the devil or maybe this time you are lucifer the fallen angel?" I am inclined to believe that Amon Ra is the thing that inspired the other culture's mythology's devils. Amon Ra is probably Lucifer, Satan, the christian devil and all the other devils from all the other mythologies on earth going back to the oldest mythologies of man. He's old and he's gotten around.

This show is epic. Eva Green giving a Masterclass in acting. Just shows what she is capable of given great material. I cannot recall a better performance by any actress on a tv show. Time for her to get proper roles in Hollywood. She is the real deal.

I couldn't agree more...I've been a long time fan of Eva Green since I saw her in Casino Royale...:hrt: I hope she is given better roles in the future that she can sink her teeth into. She is a great actress and thank god for giving us Eva Green.

I am enjoying the individual parts of this show but I don't think it has all quite gelled together as a whole narrative. All the focus on Vanessa, while good, has dominated the pacing to the point that several of the other elements feel short-changed. The creature and Dorian Gray especially have felt pretty superfluous to the plot even though I have liked both (especially the creature, which might be my favorite character). They've been more like diversions away from the real story thread.

Another great episode in terms of adding depth but I'm not sure how to take the ending. I mean why didn't Ethan just do that sooner instead of faffing about? The only thing I can think of is that what he performed is more complicated than an exorcism, and must have consequences on his self. That's why he hesitated for so long; he may of had to sacrifice himself in some way?

Ethan has lost his faith. He did not want to revisit it until he absolutely had to.

I will agree on Dorian Gray. He hasn't really done anything in seven episodes besides slept around. But the Creature has been great and is definitely one of the most intriguing plot threads on the show.

However, at the end of the day, Eva Green is the star. And with episodes like this and Closer Than Sisters, you see why. She knocks it out of the park every week.

Vanessa is one of the least interesting part of the show for me. I'm more interested in the Frankenstein & Caliban plot line, Malcolm's hunt for Mina and the mysterious Ethan Chandler.

IIRC the captions said Latin. Unless it was referring to what Ives was saying. I'll have to watch it again.

Not sure of the language. Sounded like Latin but it could have been Spanish/Galacian? (don't think it was Italian).

Ethan has lost his faith. He did not want to revisit it until he absolutely had to.

Not sure on this one. I don't think what he said was a exorcist chant as such, but more of a basic prayer to St Jude, the patron saint of lost causes (that was who Brona's medal was dedicated to). Seemed like a 'Hail Mary' play from Ethan that paid off rather than him really knowing how to exorcise a demon.

Will be very interested in how they explain it one way or another. Also think he is a 'skinwalker'/werewolf.

###king awesome show btw. My jaw dropped when Ethan did his thing there (as it has many times with this show).

It was pretty magical stuff after Ethan performed the exorcism that he just walked out of the house and into the snow by his lonesome.

Also the scene where Ethan tells Victor of the pacification of the Native Americans is probably the best acting I've ever seen from Hartnett.

Just watched it again and I think Ethan is chanting this: "Santa judes apostle gloriose servir fidel es se sume che ora por ela."

No precise translation but the closest is Galician (an older form of Spanish which he could have picked up in New Mexico for example) which is roughly: "St. Jude, the Apostle Glorious, serve the faithful, help us, and pray for her."

I don't speak the language and translation engines aint great at sorting out grammatical nuances (the actual offering from Google translate was somewhat different), but I think that is the gist of what he was saying.

It may have been the St. Jude prayer, but Ethan knew it too well and spoke Latin with too much conviction to not have a history in it. He is not just a simple gunslinger who picked up a dead language on a lark. There is a story to this.

I don't think it was Latin. I've looked and the words he used don't match Latin well at all, but they do match Galician, and that is still spoken in Spain and Latin America.

Yeah, it was the "por ela" which made me think Italian because it sounded more like Spanish to me than latin. I can buy the Galician. :) It was also the accent that got me, like it was someone else's voice coming out of his mouth. It wasn't like he was just spitting out words he had read somewhere, he was repeating something he had heard for himself. Either that or somehow, after kissing the medallion, tasting it whatever, he was able to psychically tap into something the medal itself had experienced before, the way some sensitives do from things they touch. He seemed so wary of taking it when Brona gave it to him in the first place.

It was Arabic ... oh wait...I think that scene where Vanessa was shouting was Arabic...nvm...

Damn did this show meet the deadline for Submitting Eva Green for a Emmy because if it didn't she so deserves one for this show. She has been epic in every episode

Unfortunately no....Penny Dreadful missed the deadline for the Emmy's...but yes I think they should give her all the awards lol....

Oh, I agree. He's probably my favorite character. But he hasn't had much to do with the driving plot of the season. The most he's ever interfered was in killing Van Helsing, who himself was an indirect participant. It just feels to me like the narrative is imbalanced; as though they didn't have enough time in eight episodes to develop all of the story threads properly so it has become all about Eva Green's character. That isn't a bad thing necessarily, just lopsided.

I would imagine Caliban and others like Gray and the history of Ethan, Victor & Malcolm etc. will be expanded on in the next series. This one has set a great foundation for them to build on (they aint gonna wrap everything up in the finale).

I would think Brona is gonna be the bride (may seem obvious, but I'm sure they will add a twist to it), showing some of what Malcolm got up to Africa (maybe explain why the 'devil' was drawn to his family and Vanessa while he was there), then there's Ethan's history they will go into as well.

Dorian Gray..well we know his story, but I'd like to see how they explain the portraits workings (deal with the devil presumably) and show us it as well :cwink:.

I would hope they don't kill off Eva though. Let others shine in the next series, but she should still be part of the 'team'.

Oh well I guess there's always next year she should be nominated and most likely win a Golden Globe though.

Hello all I am new at this forum, wanted to share my thoughts about Penny Dreadful.

What initially drew my attention to the show, was that Eva Green was going to be in it.
I am fond of her ever since the James Bond movie and I think her acting is superb!

I have to admit that I do find the show kind of BORING to a certain extent, however I keep watching it because there are certain things about it that keeps me intrigued .
One of them is Ethan, I want to know what's up with him. Obviously he has skeletons in his closet (literately). At first I thought he was Jack the Reaper, but the scene were he wakes ups in the middle of somewhere and seems to be incoherent with how he got there, led me to believe he might be the werewolf. There was also the scene at the zoo were he seemed to " Understand" these wolves and remained calm, but then the episode were he did the exorcism kept me thinking WTF ?? I agree with the other poster who mentioned he may have been a priest or something and was cursed... Interesting. Secondly, Of course Ms Ives who seems to be somewhat of a clairvoyant/psychic/medium. With that being said, IMO the show is just OK,. I feel the writers could do a better job, in creating more of a suspense..
