Comics Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man Returns!

Zdarsky has mentioned how much he enjoys MJ's character and being able to write her with Peter. I'm willing to bet we'll continue to see her pop up in the Spectacular series. Though I am also going to bet that she'll continue to be just a friend.

Well yeah, but I'm wondering how much he'll actually be able to use her though. Everything we've heard has indicated that this'll pretty much be a glorified team-up book and Zdarsky will still have to cater to what Slott wants since he's still writing the main title (unfortunately). And I can't imagine Slott would want her to become a constant presence in Peter's life again.

Plus, there's also the matter that MJ is basically an Iron Man character now, so Zdarsky might also have to get Bendis' approval as well. And I can't imagine that he'd want to give her up considering how much of a fan he is of her (despite the fact that he isn't having her do much right now).

I'm also wondering how this Rebecca London thing is going to turn out?

Question. I'm debating reading some if Slott's run, specifically the superior spider-man, because I'm somewhat intrigued by it. What do people think? I see a lot of hate and a then sone who love it...which means I'll probably be somewhere in the middle. But I'm curious about it. Ive read up on some of the ideas behind the guys' run and to an extent I give him kudos for trying to do some things different from the same old same old...but some I'm just going...nahh.

So curious as to what people think.

I liked the concept behind Superior Spider-Man but the execution was really, really poor.

Especially where at a point in the book, Slott purposely makes Ock come off as a better person than Peter Parker. I've never seen a writer so enamored with a character then Slott is with Doc Ock.

Not only that, but it wasn't even properly resovled. There are a lot of major questions left hanging that are ignored for a quick finish.

I was hoping I was wrong, but it sounds like MJ won't be appearing in the first issue after all. The 2nd one is a possibility however due to Ironheart's involvement, but I'm not getting my hopes upon that either. Although there does appear to be one development which will no doubt end up being quite controversial.

Beware of Spoilers!:

Ok! Awesome! I was wondering when they would touch upon that again!
Definately getting this now!

It's worth reading...if you enjoy fan-fic.

The story premise is interesting--however, it has been done before and executed much better. Superior is basically the poor man's version of Kraven's Last Hunt.

I would recommend it. It was an interesting concept, and I enjoyed it. It may have gone on a little too long and the resolution was rushed (trying restore Peter to tie in with the ASM2 movie), but it was fun while it lasted.

I mean, it's still pretty different thant KLH in terms of general concept. Kraven metaphorically became Spider-man. Otto literally became Spider-man/Peter Parker.

I was watching the comics explained guy on youtube break it down, and I can see what people are saying. Certain elements are definitely fascinating, others I'm not as big into. It definitely feels more like a "What if?" story than something that would have happened in the main line...but I give him credit for trying such different take.

Superior Spider-Man is fantastic. Definitely check it out. I think you'll love it.

The Ock stuff is why I'm interested mostly. It seems like a very nuanced take on Ock, and it really is an interesting idea.

I'll be intrigued to see if they bring back Ock as a straight villain when he eventually returns, or if he'll continue to be a kind of anti-hero.

The worst part about it that everything that happened to Otto was negated in the last issue.

He's already back. He recently teamed with Hydra.

Superior was a really, really fun ride. The first ~9 issues are a thrill ride. After that it bogs down a bit but it was never really a chore to read (unlike say, portions of Venom vol. 2 which I just finished on Marvel Unlimited). Definitely read the lead-in "Dying Wish" arc from ASM in 700 and the couple preceding issues as well, really makes the first issue of Superior work better IMO.

The premise is exactly the same. A villain defeats spider-man and then takes his place to prove that he is more worthy. The difference lies in the execution. While I did enjoy certain aspects of Superior, KLH is without a doubt the better of the two. And it's not even close. Superior's biggest problem is how much it puts down Peter in an effort to prop up Octavious. Also how convenient everything is for Ock. KLH on the other hand is widely considered the best spider-man story ever. A title it deserves. Imo, Superior doesn't crack the top 25.

Superior is worth reading though. And if you like Otto you'll definitely enjoy it. I know Joker is a big Otto fan and he's raved about it so, there you go.

The whole point of the series is that Otto is not, in fact, Superior, and that's what brings his time in Peter's body to a close. Sure, the series points out certain inefficiencies in Peter's methods, but a lot of the time Otto's "improvements" come at the cost of humanity, morality, or safety to others.

That's why he's not truly Superior.

Yeah....no. KLH is a story about obsession as a hubris. Leaven defeats Spider-man and takes his place because he is driven by his obsession to be the best hunter, to be the best. That's it.

Superior is started from the simple act of survival, and then the main driving theme of the story seems to be and out learning from a foe you were jealous of, and felt inferior to.

The basic themes are completely different.

What brought the superior series to a close was the release of the ASM movie that summer. It was timed to coincide with the movie and thus the return of Peter. I don't think Otto would have stayed in there permanently of course but I also believe Slott would have liked that series to continue indefinitely. Just my opinion. And I don't care for a story that puts down the main character as well as other main supporting characters like MJ and Felicia. Again, just my opinion. I think the story could have been written much better.

Slott has actually said he only planned a little more than 6 issues of Superior initially. It was nothing but an "extended arc" in his own words. (Personally, I think the ending of Superior #9 was easily reversible to be the end of that original plan). Sales were so strong that Marvel asked him to string it along and so we got however many more issues.

I've seen Slott say that and I agree with you about issue 9 however with Slott, I just can't take him for his word. I'm just going by my own opinion on the matter. That said, how the series ended seemed rushed and left such a mess I'm inclined to believe it was done so because of the movie release. Imo that makes sense. Although Slott does have a tendency to come up with these story ideas that seem interesting but end up falling flat cause he's not a good writer. That probably won't sit well with some folks but I'm not a fan of his work aside from a few things here and there.

Oh, it absolutely ended because of TASM2's release (convenient how an Electro-centric story happened to come out that next month, right?) but I just wanted to put out there that it was never really planned to still be going near the TASM2 release date.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they or aren't they bringing back Superior in some form?
