The problem with Black Pearl is that the concept was really fully developed. It was intended to be a far more serious film until Johnny Depp showed up and almost got fired with his interpretation of Jack Sparrow. Fortunately he did because because the more serious aspects don't work at all. A good example is the absolutely dreadful scene between Elizabeth and Will in the hold of the Interceptor after the first escape from Isla De Muerta. That is the worst scene, but there are plenty of others scattered throughout the film.

For the sequels, they knew what they were getting going in and they are more polished as a result.

Can anyone with the Blu-Rays of the first three movies tell me if the trailers for all three movies are on there ? I am tying to find the trailers in good quality & they are not on the DVDs

Wow, I think I am the only person in the world that loves to death the first trilogy, and I mean love like one of my favorite series of all time!

And I definitely am the only person in the world whose favorites from the trilogy go in this order;

1. Dead Man's Chest
2. At World's End
3. Curse of the Black Pearl.

Yeah that's right, despite me loving the first film, it is actually in last place for my favorites, as I loved 2 and 3!

I think the reason a lot of people didn't like those movies wasn't because they weren't well made (they were), it's just that they didn't like how they turned out.

Now for someone like me, who loves confusing, long, fantasy movies, they were perfect for me!

Now, about the fourth. It wasn't needed at all, we all know that. However, I have no reason how it has such bad reviews.

It had good action, laughs, a story that most people wanted, (straightforward and simple) and had good acting all around.

So despite it being my least favorite, I still though it was really good, and I hope it succeeds. The only reason it's my least favorite is because I preferred the kind of story 2 and had.

Going to add to my post.

Honestly, I hope they stop at 4. It seems now that they wouldn't really know what to do; epic or small, as both genres got pretty bad reviews.

Now on a completely different note, why was 2 and 3 trashed so much? 3 I can sort of understand, being almost 3 hours long, but other than the length, I couldn't really find anything majorly wrong with it. Yeah, the gathering of the Pirates was kinda lame, as they didn't actually end up fighting, but still!

And 2! When I saw 2, I was half expecting it to be one of those movies that everyone loved over the sequel, similar to T2.

It had much better characters and character time, a lot better action, and well, we all know how good the special effects were.

And the story was awesome. Most people seemed to hate the characters continually backstabbing each other, (this also happens in ) but come on! These are pirates! If you want good, trustworthy heroes, watch Harry Potter.

Me too, my favourite was Dead man's chest as it had some of my favourite moments including Jack as a more prominent character, it was in my opinion the darkest one, the Kraken, some of Davy Jones best scennes and Cutler Becket as a Palpatine tipe of character.

That whole sequence with the water wheel and the kraken battle at the end were some of my favorite scenes out of the four films.

I also loved the down-and-out Norrington in DMC, but they pretty much waited him in AWE.

The
end where Jack abruptly leaves Angelica on the island could be a reference to the end of DMC where Elizabeth screws jack over. Because the last time a woman tried to kiss him, look what happened. And he knew Angelica. So I'm just glad Jack was smart.

Regarding the after credits scene where she is left there on the island and you see her looking into the sea at something was i the only person going 'Pleeease be Sea Turtles'

I actually thought the same thing. If that had happened it could have been good or bad. I think I've had enough of the sea turtle jokes though. Because that line was references so many times in the other films. Alot of the jokes were recycled.

The only line from the other films that carried over into this was, "You seem familiar. Have I threatened you before?"

Which was fine. It's one of Jack's better lines and Jack was being more of an ass to King George.

actually i was hoping the Flying Dutchman would come out of the water

Finally got around to seeing it today.

I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't blown away by it. I'd rank it as slightly better than 2 and 3, but it dragged on at times. It definitely felt longer than 2 hours and 20 minutes. The best parts for me were the London opening scenes and the mermaid attack.

It was nice to see Jack front and center after he was practically buried in all the commotion in At World's End. He didn't have as many memorable lines as in the previous films, but Depp gave an enjoyable performance as always. He seemed to have toned it down a little compared to the last two (Dead Man's Chest especially. Jack was like a cartoon in that one), which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Geoffrey Rush stood out to me among the cast, just as he did in At World's End. I hope he gets a bigger role in the sequel. I'm sure he will. He's the Daffy Duck to Jack Sparrow's Bugs Bunny.

Blackbeard was sort of underwhelming. His introduction was badass (burning the cook in the boat with the flamethrower), but he never really reached full potential as a villain to me. His beard was only lit for one scene too. :csad: If anything was memorable about him,[BLACKOUT] it was his death scene. Quite gory for a Disney film.[/BLACKOUT]

As for the other new characters, Penelope Cruz did a good job in the role of Angelica. I'm sure her role in these movies is far from over. I didn't care too much for the missionary and the mermaid storyline, as gorgeous as she was. It didn't really go anywhere.

Surprisingly, I didn't really miss anyone from the first three. Maybe I would have preferred Pintel and Ragetti to the new crew, but whatever...[BLACKOUT]it's just chilling to think that the old Black Pearl crew is all dead thanks to Blackbeard. Save for the undead Jack the monkey, of course. [/BLACKOUT]Speaking of which, was it just me or did Blackbeard's ship look an awful lot like the Black Pearl?

I guess my only major complaint is that I would have much rather have had it as a stand-alone story but they still have loose ends to tie up [BLACKOUT](the Pearl being trapped in the bottle, Angelica marooned on the island with Jack's voodoo doll) [/BLACKOUT]. I'm down for more, but I don't think the franchise should go on longer than six or seven films. I feel like they need to find new ways to keep it fresh. I'm open to the idea of casting Russell Brand as Jack Sparrow's brother. Not everyone may be open to that, but it could make the overall story a bit more interesting. I'd also be interested if they wait 15 or so years and focus on an older Jack Sparrow.

I think Angelica finding the voodoo doll on the beach is just a playful thing. I doubt it will go anywhere. I would prefer for a different love interest in each film.

And in the next film, he can have the Pearl. We don't need to see them get it out of the bottle. Jack just can escape from some place and Gibbs can have the sails go up.

And I'd say go in the opposite direction for Jack's brother. Go with someone like Hugh Jackman. They should be complete opposites. A well respected conventional society type. Someone who Jack cannot stand. It would make no goddamn sense to use Brand. Yes, they share similar mannerisms, but Jack became like he is now because of bein trapped on that island. He was never like that beforehand. So for Brand to be like him is stupid.

I'm not saying there was anything spectacularly original for the Pirates 4 theme, but I was stating that I just love the Pirates theme and scores overall. It's great IMO.

The witty pirate banter and humor is great and it is what makes these movies for me, along with Depp as Sparrow of course.

I love the Pirates music, IMO its Hans Zimmer's best work. TDK's score isn't THAT great IMO.

I love the sense of adventure these films have. The new Indiana Jones style movies! :D

Anyone who doesn't think Pirates 4 was better than the mess that was Pirates 3, must have been living in some weird dimension.

Pirates 4 was just a better paced and far less annoying film than Pirates 3 IMO.

I loved Pirates 3. :( But I'm going to have to watch them all at once to see which one I like over the other.

Dead Man's Chest is still my favorite Pirates movie :)

Me too!

How were the Spanish painted badly? They were on a quest from God and given authority by their King and Queen. They were very serious and intent and they didn't backstab or betray anyone.

If anything, England was painted in the bad light in every movie of this franchise. They lampooned the British royal autocracy in the first 10 minutes.

I thought it was really neat to find out that the Spanish weren't after the Fountain for personal gain but to destroy it.

I loved how we finally got more than the British as a power in the Pirate films. We got a small glimpse of other nationalities in AWE but I really liked how strongly we saw the Spanish....empire? I don't know if it was considered a empire.

No, you're not alone! I love the first three films. Pirates of the Caribbean is definitely one of my favorite franchises of all time. I have alot of favorite franchises. :D

actually i was hoping the Flying Dutchman would come out of the water

That would of been so awesome!

I'm just glad they made an effort to distance themselves from the past films. I liked that there was no Pearl or that old crew. They were great, but it was better without them. I just loved seeing Jack and Barbossa on their own and not being tied down to Will and Elizabeth's stories. It was so nice.

It was.

I'd like to see some more of the French Empire in a sequel. It tends to get overlooked in this period. Tortuga was in three films and it was officially French (albeit basically a pirate haven), but there was no sign of the French themselves.

Agreed! I loved seeing new characters and new environments. I thought it was nice to have no Pearl for a change. Jack and Barbossa are the best!

Just keep to them and you're golden. They've always been the most interesting characters anyhow.

How can you say POTC is Zimmer's best?

Also, I didnt mind being different...but it never felt like a pirate movie. It felt like some random Indy rip off movie....I dont know...

I need to see it again...everytime I think about it, I hate it more.

It would be funny if Jack starts to not let woman kiss him in the next one when he finds out about what Angelica has. Kissing women seems to be fatal for Jack

I was to busy wondering how on earth the [BLACKOUT]voodoo doll[/BLACKOUT] traveled such a long distance all by itself (Jack definitely didn't have it, right?).

Definitely, every Pirate film needs to have at least Barbossa or Jack Sparrow to be good. I think there could be a good Pirates film that is about only Barbossa instead of Jack. Of course Jack Sparrow is largely the life of this series though.

I just find Zimmer's scores for DMC and AWE to some of his best work, or at least my favorites of his. There is alot I haven't heard of his but I definitely don't think BB, TDK, or Inception is his best work. Still good though but not my favorite.

The Lion King will forever be my favorite Zimmer score, but his score for At World's End is definitely one of my favorites of his. That score was much better than the movie deserved, imo. DMC is right up there, too.

I don't really think that. To be honest, in the last two films, it was fatal for everyone who kissed Elizabeth.

Jack - After kissing her, he was swallowed by the Kraken
Sao Feng - After kissing her, he was impaled by a piece of his ship from cannon fire
Norrington - After kissing her, he was killed by Bootstrap Bill
Will - After kissing her when they were married, he was stabbed by Davy Jones

Nothing particularly bad happened to Jack after he kissed Angelica in the beginning of OST except for being kidnapped and forced onto Blackbeard's ship.

Just saw it earlier,Was pretty cool and although I don't think it was all that great,I don't think it was bad at all!!!

I really liked Jack in this one the best since the first one,I thought they made Barbarossa into a P** and no longer a bad a*and thus a shelf of his former self until half way of the movie with him interacting more with Jack and so he was back to his former glory!!(especially the end).....Black Beard was awesome,Penelope Cruz's was pretty good,Gibs was decent in this one and the rest of the new characters were alright!!!

Disappointed there were no references to Will/Elizabeth&Davy Jones,Action&Story was great But some pretty big plot holes!!!!

Saw this today, and ended up liking it more than I thought I would.

The mermaid attack scene is probably my favorite scene of the entire franchise right after all the Kraken scenes from DMC and the maelstrom scene in AWE.

Well, I watched select scenes of the 3D version to compare with the 2D. The last 10 minutes doesn't look any darker than the 2D IMO.

Say what you think, I don't care.
It's not what I think. 3D is always darker than 2D.
