Huh the pretty girl is Spanish and French. Guess I wasn't that far off with the whole Mediterranean ancestry.

So seeing as Penelope Cruz is playing Blackbeards daughter are they going to retcon Blackbeard as a Spaniard?

Last I checked in Wikipedia he was a Brit.

Her character probably has a Spanish mother

Lol. A mermaid kiss-drag a man down the water countless times in the trailer

The third movie really tainted my excitement for this series, but that trailer looks to steer it back to what made the original so great. Love the inclusion of zombies and mermaids, it really sets itself apart as one of the few big mainstream movies that are all about fantasy-adventures.

I'd really like to see more of the mermaids, though. Aside from them looking gorgeous, it was interesting to see them grab men underwater. It looks to play on the seductress angle with a touch of the Siren mythology.

EDIT: Went to look up more info, turns out there's a detailed interview with Rob Marshall that was just released.

GB: The mermaids are pretty fascinating on, uh, several levels. Coming into the project, what was the vision as far what they could be and should be?
RM: They’re two things in a way, which is interesting. We found that they are incredibly beautiful women — incredibly seductive women — that lure men to their deaths, like the sirens. They are women but they are also animal. With our mermaids, the water line defines where they’re women and where they’re creatures. Under the water, they are creatures. They feed on pirates, the men, and that’s how they see men, as something that sustains them. In the story, a mermaid is captured because they need, specifically, a mermaid’s tear. That’s one of the things needed to make the Fountain of Youth work. There’s a series of things. It’s not easy for them, believe me, we’re making it tough.
That explains the short glimpse of strange looking creatures underwater. Cool twist on the mythology.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to...... my new obsession;

I'm sensing [BLACKOUT]another [/BLACKOUT] restraining order here......

I like the first Pirates movie, and I abhor the other two. Honestly, if there's one franchise that needs a bit of dumbing-down, it's this one. The plotlines introduced in 2 and 3 were just too much (and too pointless).

Now, with that said, I enjoyed the new trailer. Hopefully this movie will be as fun as it promises. All I want is an action-adventure "popcorn" flick, not an epic narrative. :P

To be honest the narrative wasn't that epic or confusing in the second and third films, they still felt pretty ''action adventure popcorn flick" to me.

It was confusing solely because the amount of plotlines made me not care about what was going on. The latter two movies lost themselves in an overly bloated story that, I think, tried waaaaay too hard to be epic.

Not confusing at all. Just bloated and needless. They could have probably squeezed everything into one movie if they tried.

^Not to mention, and this is coming from someone who liked them, a lot of the scene's and plot points were totally unneeded in both.

First, I'm a fan of the entire franchise, including 2 & 3, but they obviously had some story issues because of how rushed they were. Second, I like the trailer, because it was more grounded in reality, and less special effects. For me, the greatest thing about Pirates, is it doesn't take itself seriously... so that's why I can forgive the obvious flaws.

To Be honest I have liked all the movies including 2 and 3. True 2 and 3 did have its flaws but I still liked them. This new one looks a lot of fun and I can't wait to see it.

How was the Kraken needed if they easily wrote it off, off screen in the 3rd movie? Technically they could have wrote around it in the 2nd movie, having Davy Jones just take Jack himself. Sloppy script.

And how exactly was the Pirate Army "needed", considering they focused the whole 3rd movie about gathering them together, only to have them sit on the outskirts during the climax?

Yeah I agree with SuperBatman as well. 2 and 3 were just entertaining films to me. I wasn't looking for Oscar worthy films when I watched them. I wanted a movie about Pirates and thats what I got

maybe not needed, but enjoyed. The way they wrote off the Kraken was one of the flaws of 3 tho.

That final battle could have been like the Battle of Hoth or the Battle of Minas Tirith instead it's only 2 ships. Seriously, that's just lazy storytelling.

Agreed completley. Make Davy Jones the fearful entity that comes after you, not the Kraken. While Jones looked cool, I would have preferred a Jaws approach with him. Keep him hidden in the shadows and off screen most of the time, until he finally comes to get you, and then it's more frightening.

Jones was about the only great thing about DMC. That CG is still incredible. If only they just got rid of Will and Elizabeth in the second and kept the Jones after Sparrow story. Hell, keep Beckett as well possibly or put him in the third one. The Asian element in the third one was what they could have kept as well, just create a plot inside it.

I think Norrington as a disgraced drunk who becomes a pirate and Sparrow's unwilling subordinate (who then tries to kill him later) was pretty hilarious. I thought the three-way sword fight on the wheel was great. I thought the Kraken was cool (but they used him too much and his attacks were too long, considering we see him attack three ships, one of them in twice). Plus Bill Nigh (make that Bill Nigh with a squid face) always improves a film.

DMC had potential. AWE had nothing redeeming about it other than pretty visuals. Even Depp's Jack Sparrow got grating by the midway point in that movie.
