Rumor alert:

Videogaming247 has it on good authority that the upcoming PS3 Firmware 2.4 will include in-game XMB and Trophy support.

We’re told that the added XMB feature allows users to play their own music in-game.

Programming tools to support the update have apparently now gone out to developers.

We’re unaware that a release date for the software has been set. Sony has already said that in-game XMB wil be added to PS3’s functionality this summer.

This is unconfirmed. Just remember where you heard it first.

We've finally received word that the long awaited, and much rumored, PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 2.40 is indeed the real deal and is said to be coming relatively soon. Many of the most requested features, such as a universal friends list and in-game messaging will be included, in addition to a few rather nice surprises (*cough*soundtracks*cough*). We definitely can't divulge all of the details, but trust us, it's coming.
We aren't yet 100% sure of the actual release date, but all signs point to sometime in June. We're guesing that Sony will probably detail 2.40 in the coming weeks.

Ya, I JUST read something very similar a minute ago and was just about to make a thread when I saw this. So glad I saw this first lol, especially if it really doesn't come out in June like this article says.

Man I hope this is true, I've been pretty eager about in game XMB coming out, the trophies sound nice too. However this sounds like their lining it up to release around the time MGS4 comes out like the article says. Which makes sense since a lot of ppl seemed to have been holding off on the PS3 (atleast they said they have on forums) for MGS4, so making sure it's out for a new influx of owners is a good idea.

So apparently their working on the PS3 being able to skip using a computer and screen capture card and just straight out capture video footage in game, and then give the option of saving it or uploading it to Youtube.

Apparently their working on it for the updated webbrowser. IMO this will be an amazing feature, and take out a lot of the hassle with capture video game footage. It will also probably cause an in flux of random meaningless crap on Youtube, but it's worth it .

That is awesome. I can't tell you how many times I played, say Warhawk for example, and wished I could save that round to show my friends. Especially when I take Guardian out with a well timed grenade.

I have very little experience with Live so I couldn't tell you. However I believe that not all games will support it right away, Sony has given developers the tools to add full XMB support but it's apparently up to the developers to patch their games to support it.

However I guess we can put it like this -

Xbox 360 and PS3 both will now have in game access to music, and friends list.

360 achievements = PS3 trophies

PS3 online has become much more stable and gives little problems anymore.

So atm I'm not seeing much difference, I'd say they were on par. I'm not sure about the difference in what their respective stores carry, but when Home and PS3 youtube support and video capture comes out I'd put the PS3 online above Xbox Live personally.

I think the trophies for past games will be up to the developers, much like rumble. I doubt all games will support it but the ones from here on out will. I believe the 18th is the date that seems to be popping up more

I dont get why games didnt have achievements. They already coded them for the 360 version. Why take them out on the PS3? I think DMC4 is the only multiplatform game that kept them in for both versions, but I think all multiplatform developers should have done so. Sure the coding would have been different but it wouldnt have hurted

You're right Havok, achievements should have stayed in those games, but they were all fairly weak efforts at multiplatform titles anyway, especially F.E.A.R.

I'd like all PS3 games to get trophies so I culd show off to my friends and have reason to go back and play older games, but end of the day, I'm just satisfied its finally happening.

OK I HAVE 2 THEORIES ON UPDATE V2.40, HERE GOES!!!


1) I THINK IT COULD BE RELEASED ON THE TWELFTH AND HERE'S WHY, MGS4 COMES OUT THAT DAY, SECONDLY THE PSN STORE IS UPDATED ON THAT SAME DAY(JUNE 12 IS A THURSDAY), IT CAN'T POSSIBLY BE A COINCIDENCE THAT ALL OF THIS WOULD HAPPEN ON THE SAME DAY, WHICH IS WHY I THINK SONY'S PLANING TO RELEASE THE UPDATE THAT DAY ALONG WITH MAYBE SOME OTHER GOODIES, MY GUESS IS THEY HAD THIS PLANED!!!

2) MAYBE THEY RELEASE THE UPDATE 2 OR 3 DAYS BEFORE MGS4 ARGUABLY THE PS3'S BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR TO AMP THINGS UP EVEN MORE, IN MY OPINION IT WOULD BE A SMART MOVE!!!up:
