I don't know in what direction he can evolve. He certainly can't become the smooth, respectable businessman who privately tries to destroy Superman.
The "smooth, respectable businessman" Luthor is generally evolving into something else anyway. That's sort of the point of that version of the character, especially in the more modern comics. The smooth businessman thing is a mask for his true purpose and in many cases, his true personality.
Eisenberg's Luthor can certainly be smoother moving forward. That's just a matter of how the character presents and portrays himself.
If Luthor can be considered remotely respectable by many in the DCU after some of the things he's done in the comics, I don't see why the things he did in BVS are all that different. His credibility is going to take a hit, but that's also the point of the historical Luthor/Superman dynamic.
