Poor Marketing might hurt our beloved Thor.

No I didn't but If I had to choose it'd be the Dr Pepper one. :D

I just saw the Thor "lightning hammer" toy commercial on tv for the second time.

Just saw the BK Kids Meal one a minute ago.

here in brazil the marketing is very poor, only 1 time i saw 1 comercial and only three days before start.

I just saw the Dr. Pepper tv spot during a commercial break on Adult Swim

Just saw advertised on FX that this Sunday will be "Superhero Sunday" and will feature Chris Hemsworth showing behind the scenes footage and interviews from Thor all day long.

It was damn cool to see all the Marvel characters cut together in the promo like one big universe. Even the films that weren't good, it was even cool to see Elektra and Ghost Rider spliced in. Seeing the Hulk scream and then in the very next frame see the Thing duck a flying car HAS to make you smile.

FX does the Superhero sunday every year for the Marvel movies and its awesome every time.

Yep, I will be sure to tune in this year because they're are alot of superhero movies that I've only seen one time.

I'm pretty sure they've assassinated this movie by mostly showing footage of a blonde guy riding around in a truck in the desert. Thor is loaded with amazing fantasy imagery, none of which wound up in the marketing at all. What in God's name were they so afraid of? The same fate as all the other space fantasy superhero movies that have been bombing lately?

Good word of mouth might help cushion the dropoff, but Thor only has two weekends to make its money. This thing is dead as soon as Pirates comes out.

heh These were up at the Theater too

This is like a Wak-a-mole, you hit the dome under the hammer and it spins a light on the back. I got Thor in one hit. :D

Huh? What previews have you been watching, because most of Thor's tv spots show him in his godly form 75% of the time.

Wow. So they killed this movie already?lol
You probably watched different footage and trailers; the one I saw showed a lot o fantastic things.

It's funny to re-read some of the 'doom and gloom' posts in hindsight, isnt it?

''I've looked into my crystal ball and I can see that this movies definately going to fail!!!!!!'' - right before the movie makes more than its budget back even before its been released in the U.S, Japan and China.

You gotta love it.

You know I do :woot:

I think the single best strategy that will end up benefiting this film was opening overseas first. That's not to say that this always works(it worked against IM2) but in this particular instance it will end up having been a master stroke.

The results. It was a gamble but one that seems to have paid off.

Yea, the positive word of mouth from everywhere Thor has already been released will positively effect the US box office.

I predict at least a 70 million opening weekend.

As of this moment, Deadline's calling $65 for the weekend. Not what it needed to be.

There's so much in this film that should have made it into the trailers--sweeping shots of them riding horseback on the rainbow bridge, any shot of Thor flying, the stuff with the monster on the crumbling ice mass at end of the fight at Jotunheim, Odin beaming down on his eight-legged horse.

Whoever put the marketing together obviously had some mandate that the space fantasy elements were to be toned down as much as possible. They tried to sell this to people like it was Iron Man, except it doesn't work like Iron Man, so most didn't understand the ads. How did they end up with a final poster that's just a headshot tinted red instead of, I don't know, your hero flying or hitting something with his huge hammer or calling down a lightning strike? This relatively weak opening isn't the film's fault.

Yea... becuase putting all your money shots in the trailers is a good idea.

No, the best trailer impresses, but holds back. You can't put the big money shots of the movie in the trailers. Because when you get to actually watch the movie, it takes away from them if you've seen then about a hundred times in trailers and tv spots.

According to Box Office Mojo, anything over 60 Mil "should cast it in a positive light"

Yeah, but only because anything less would have been disastrous.

I just don't know if they feel this is enough to be considered a success.

A release date for Thor 2 by the end of the year would be the only real sign they're feeling positive.

People need to understand that the days of 100 million dollar opening weekends are over. They were rare enough in the first place.

60-70 million is good.

^ we certainly haven't seen the last of 100m opening weekends, but Thor should be able to open above 60m. I would actually see anything less than 60m as a slight disappointment given the overseas performance and reviews.

Well, I think Harry Potter and the next Batman flick will get 100 million OW.

But it seems like people these days act like a blockbuster not making 100 mill OW is a disappointment or something.
