It's just one of those regional things that someone from elsewhere will find odd but not for any reason that's completely rational.

I mean... Gas stations sell a lot of different ****. Why not knives?

But to North East types it just feels... off.

Like putting mayo on french fries or calling a sub sandwich a "grinder" or a "hoagie".

It just sounds off on multiple levels.

In the South we have to fight for the right to use a pump. We must defend our pump from all would be challengers. The gas stations know that not everyone remembers to bring a weapon with them so the gas stations sell knives. But they're cheap little silly looking knives, because the gas stations are run by passive aggressive sadists.
