Power Rangers 3.0

Is Wildforce any good? I think I watched it when I was a kid. Don't remember much about it.

It was boring to me. Acting could range from tolerable to downright embarrassing. Ricardo Medina(Cole) and Master Org's actor were the worst.

It was also the last Saban show before Disney took control with NS. They had already moved Wild Force to ABC kids half way through.

After finding this thread and having my inner child suddenly hunger for Power Rangers I found myself looking a lot at the Super Sentai originals, mainly because everyone was claiming Power Rangers was nothing in comparison. But I can't really work out the difference, except for maybe some slightly better actors in the Japanese ones.

I recently started watching Skinkenger(Samurai), and damn the stories are delivered much better, acting and production wise. Plus the Japanese deliver a much more adult feel.

Sometimes Sentai can be extremely goofy and sometimes it can bring some awesome moments and serious moments.

From Gokaiger episode 1

All 34 past sentai's of earth gather forces to repel the forces of the zangyack empire.

They sacrifice their powers to stop an assault

The 35th sentai team come to earth because they hear there's an ultimate treasure.

Is Power Rangers still a hit with kids? are the toys selling as well in the beginning? why is the show still on?

Super Sentais are very different from Power Rangers, despite the fact that some PR series chose to copy the plots literally from their sentai counterparts (like what PR Samurai is doing right now). Even in more goofy sentai series like the Go-onger, the Super Sentai franchise by and large have much better actors compared to Power Rangers, and the acting skills do make a difference since their performance won't distract you or take you out of the story. I also feel that Super Sentai have the better story, plot, and structure overall, and thanks to the cultural differences and the looser censorship in Japan, in a sentai series you can find more realistic violence and even death, and more sexual innuendos, than the Power Rangers would under Saban & Disney.

According to the Rangercrew board, the lattest episode "Fish Out of Water" for Power Rangers Samurai scored a 2.9, which is supposedly not that bad a rating. I'm not sure about the toy sales, however.

If you want to start off a sentai series to introduce you to this universe, I think Shinkenger (PR Samurai's counterpart) is an excellent start. Gokaiger is also terrific, because they henshin into past sentai teams and you can take a look at the history of the Super Sentai, and give you some general ideas on what they were all about.

Maybe I should check out one of the Super Sentai originals. Which is the best?

I would recommend Shinkenger, not because it is adapted by PR Samurai, but because this series' theme is samurai and the Japanese culture, you'll find it resonate alot better than what PR Samurai is doing. I think calling American actors Japanese feudal warriors, and put them in a pseudo-Japanese setting and lifestyle just don't make alot of sense. Other series that received high marks included Magiranger, Dekaranger, and Timeranger. Gokaiger (the most recent series) is amazing and you can follow it like rest of us do. If you want really old series, I'd recommend Dairanger, Jetman, and GoGoV.

I've only started on Shinkenger, so I can't give my opinion on other series, but I can say, Shinkenger has blown my balls away.

I'd say PRiS, PRMF, and RPM are vastly different than Megaranger, Magiranger and Go-Onger. iS and RPM only used some of the fight stock footage and the mecha battles, but story-wise -- a whole different ballgame.

Oh thank you! I found some downloads, but I could only find a few episodes dotted around here and there.

Both Overtime and GUIS (Grown Up In Spandex) have fansub of sentai series as well, but imo TV Nihon is the best, and they have more fansub DDL & Torrent than other sites.

I think the main difference between Sentai and Power Rangers is that the former tends to be more willing to swing between the extremes - going all out serious or all out goofy - resulting in the shows being very polarising with people either really liking it or really disliking it; where as Power Rangers seems to keep things on the middle ground (or perhaps slightly more towards the goofy side) with it being neither here nor there.

Come on, Power Rangers has had heaps of badass moments. Remember when when the Quantum Ranger first appeared? Slouched, hauntingly tapping his gun against his arm before leaping into action, one gun blazing? That was so ****ing awesome!

Right of the sentai.

RPM had some great original badass moments though, thank you Dillon.

I'll be looking forward to see them when I marathon the series sometime in the next few days :D

...wow, like the only difference was he said 'bastard'. I knew Power Rangers used footage from the original series, but I had no idea to that extent. Kinda makes me feel weird watching those shows now, knowing they are some spliced...thing.

Time Force is one of the Power Rangers series that stayed fairly faithful to the plot and storyline of Timeranger.

Not all the series are like that, though. But it's producer decisions that greatly affected series like Time Force, Wild Force and Samurai to be more like their Sentai counterpart -- Jonathan Tzachor, for example. Tzachor clashed with writers Judd Lynn and Jackie Merchand on the storylines for TF, where he wanted it to be more like Timeranger. For Samurai, Tzachor brought in new writers and they essentially translated the scripts from Shinkenger verbatim.

Shame. I hoped that with Saban in charge of the franchise, he'd bring back the quality lacking from the pre-RPM Disney seasons. He's just phoning it in.

Guess I'll give that one a miss then. Can I watch those specific episodes without watching the rest of the series or will they make no sense?

You can view them by themselves. You won't get lost and "Reinforcements" nicely wraps some dangling plot threads from TF; "Forever Red" is okay fan wank. It would've worked better as a 2-part episode IMO.

Anyone know any good places to buy Hurricaneger or Ninja Storm products? Tried ebay, but things are a bit too pricey.

So...I just got back from watching the first episode of Gokaiger and I'm still grinning from how awesome it was! The effects still weren't all that great (but they blew PR Samurai out of the water) and I'm not sure if I like the action figure using past Super Sentai power idea, but it was kinda cool to see the original teams costumes (even if they were pretty ******), since I never even knew there was a series before Mighty Morphing (except that weird fish alien thing I never saw) since I was brought up on Power Rangers. But that aside, I have no idea how Power Rangers can feel so american when that episode played out brilliantly like a live action anime. Plus I don't think a team has ever shown such convincing teamwork with the way they were swapping weapons and stuff. But, Captain Marvelous? Lol... and what's up with the Green Ranger in this? And that garbage truck thing?

Try the Marketplace forum on Rangerboard.com for PRNS/Hurricanger toys. Just make sure you read the FAQs, and make sure the person you deal with has a solid dealer/seller history.

If you're looking for more recent Sentai products, like Go-Onger (RPM), Shinkenger (PRS), Goseiger (2012/2013) or Goukaiger (2013/2014)-- CSToysJapan.com is a good online store.
