Maybe it's modern special effects, but the alien ship looks a lot less ancient here. Will we see a living space jockey?

So you define a masterpiece as a piece of artwork that offers something NEW and ORIGINAL to a genre? I consider a masterpiece a piece of artwork that is masterfully and skillfully done and is enjoyable to behold. I don't need something NEW for it to be a masterpiece, it just needs to be extremely well done.

Hey, for my favorite book I need more then a little singing and shots of people standing about. Even if one of those persons is Cate Blanchett.

I admit that the Hobbit trailer isn't all that and a bag of chips (still loved what I saw though) and while I thought TDKR trailer was cool I didn't think it was gripping, but the trailer for THIS movie has got me very excited for Prometheus.

^ i agree more i look at TDKR trailer it is'nt all that exciting

follow up to TDK is what is exciting not the trailer
 
This movie's about the events that happened on the planet that the Nostromo visits years later right?

The trailer was pretty badass. I really liked the blaring horns and then the alien shrieks at the end.

The effects look so good. How much of it is practical? A lot of them looked like real set pieces.
 
No it takes place 30 years prior to Alien. Hence a prequel. And apparently Scott used a lot of practical, as much as he could, which is not surprising, and a great thing.
 
I saw nothing that suggested a xenomorph presence from the Alien franchise other than the derelict craft set pieces shown in Alien and Aliens.
 
Which is a good thing.

And this looks creepy as **** without them anyway.
 
That and this movie is going to be kept pretty secret, I hope for a surprise (maybe not on a chestburster level) but something really unique in Prometheus. I have a feeling regardless we may not see a full grown Alien in this film, but we may see the egg/facehugger and possibly a chestburster popping out of the Space Jockey at the very end. Possible, but who knows. They are keeping a lot of this in the dark intentionally and I'm fine with that.

So the planet those explorers go to isnt the one that Nostromo follows the beacon to years later?

Yeah, they looked damn good. I was asking because right before watching the trailer I watched the red letter media 90 min. review of Attack of the Clones and the closing statement was, When you suck out the humanity of a film and replace it with the ease of digital filmmaking, it just sucks.

It's been a long time since something seriously unexpected occurred in a theater experience for me.

Hope it stays in the dark if there is indeed something beyond the surface.

Is that the freak'n Space Jockey head they have in the lab?!

I'm pretty stoked for this already. Between this and TDKR, with Avengers and Spider-man as the icing on top, next year is going to be the best year at the cinema in since....ever.

I think part of the hype is Scott has a proven knack for this genre and the cast is killer. Plus, people have been waiting to have the Jockey explored for over 30 years. As well as the franchise needs an entry worthy of the original films.
Now I'm not crazy enough to think this will be an immortal classic like Alien. Aside from Star Wars and the original King Kong I can't think of a more inspired film than Alien. Between Scott re-defining the future, to Gigers designs, the classic Goldsmith score, a great cast, the whole insanely creative concept of the creature,..on and on.....Alien is one of those times when all of the stars perfectly aligned to create a classic. That is a too high a standard for any film to follow and near impossible to come by. But....Prometheus does have the proper ingredients. Plus...strong, well executed sci-fi has been gone since the first Matrix (I may give a nod to Rise of Planet of the Apes).
Based on that teaser and everything above, this feels like it's bringing back that great feeling that you have seeing a terrific piece of sci-fi. Consider me pumped.

Saw the trailer and I am 100% on board! :up:

I just don't understand why they were so cagey about whether this is a prequel to Alien. It pretty obviously is. And I'm all for it!
 
I think they started writing it as a prequel, but they realized as they went on that calling it like that would make people feel it had a lot to do with the Alien movies. And is not the case, it evolved into a more stand alone feature, but with some obvious hints and elements from the Alien movies.
I like it better this way, to be honest.
 
I was underwhelmed, probably because I was hoping for something as iconic as Alien's teaser. Now I've seen the Pilot outside his suit. And I'm hype again.

The amphoras and living (rather than dead) Pilot seem like clues, to me, that Scott is going to explore some of what was cut out of the first. Particularly, the egg morph scene and the Alien that popped out of the Pilot. So maybe he's not telling the whole truth about an Alien cameo?

I think a "masterpiece" of a film shouldn't be able to be defined by any genre. It needs to be special, transcendent. You can't simply call Goodfellas a gangster flick, Raging Bull a sports film, Blade Runner simply sci-fi, or The Incredibles a Superhero movie. Perfect storm of director, cast, script and many other things that provide and unique energy and freshness. Gladiator is missing the script imo. Cliched and lacking inspiration and wit.

They have all got me excited, but Prometheus hasn't shown me anything I wasn't expecting. If you told me it was remake of Alien, I would believe you.
