Q: Why does EVERY major Marvel villain want to rule the world?

Yeah, and they're not beyond reason, which makes them more dynamic than a hardline, megalomaniacal ego-tripper like the majority of the crazies who want to either rule or destroy the world.

Well, yeah, but no parent's ever perfect. ;) Loki doesn't really seem to have much of a relationship with his own children anyway, and we just saw in Thor #12 that he absolutely despised his own father.

Well, he probably would have had more of a relationship with them if they hadn't been banished into the nether realms and grew up to be two mindless killing machines and one single minded sadistic ***** who's really not much of a people person in general.

But Magneto has a great ego. I loved Wolverine's line in the first movie.

"If you were so righteous, it'd be you in that thing."

Yeah, I thought that line summed up how Movie Magneto was basically a ridiculous, cowardly old man with more power than he knew what to do with.

Any decent version Maggles would have got right up on that machine with one of his lackies being like 'no Magneto, it will kill you!' and Mags being like 'Fools! I am the Mighty Master of Magnetism! No mere machine may menace my might!"

I may have asked this question before but it's still a valid question. Why does EVERY major league Marvel villain( Dr.Doom, The Mandarin, The Red Skull, Dr Octopus, Magneto) want to rule the world( Granted, some villains such as Magneto wish to do so for basically altruistic reasons, such as making it a safe place for mutants, and others just want to kill off the entire human population such Annihilus or Ultron)? Ruling a single polity is troublesome enough( just as Gordon Brown or Barack Obama!!!), even as a dictator(which simplifies things somewhat) would most likely send the average super-villain( even a Dr.Doom or Magneto) round the bend in a week. Personally I wouldn't wish the role of world ruler on even my worst enemy!!!

Anybody think as I do?

Terry

The reason why, is because Marvel supervillains can rule the world better than all the world leaders.

Up to and including Mephisto, who would really be just a glorified divorce attorney and would probably break up marriages everywhere as his first official act if he ever rose to power.

Really? Loki? You think so? ;)

His kids weren't from his early life, though. His early life was the result of Laufey, Odin, and now his future self.

I said earlier. The guy's 3,000 years old. He was probably well under 1,000 when his kids were born and banished, and I'm pretty sure that was still before his full on descent into evil.

The best villains and most interesting ones...Are the one who think that what they are doing is the right thing...Ruling the world is kind of a cop out now...

Well, if we're talking his mythical history, he brought most of his own hard luck on himself. He may not have been evil during the millennia that the myths cover before the Marvel history kicks in, but he was already a total dick.

Oh, yes. But mainly in the annoying geek who's venting his geek-anger by being a smart ass prankster con artist kind of way. He didn't get full on evil until after the banishment of his kids.

Did you guys ever read Thor: Son of Asgard? It was basically like the Thor equivalent to Smallville and it was pretty cool.

It showed Loki's decent into evil and focused on his jealousy and stuff. It kinda goes along with what The Question is talking about.

Zadkiel takes it a little further.

I loved that series. Although, seeing how closely Balder and Sif were tied to Thor's childhood reminded me of how neglected they've been in the main comics for a long, long time.

We need more Balder. Especially more Balder not being Loki's *****. I mean, did he forget the fact that Loki murdered him?

If I were a villain, I'd settle for a continent. Moonstone had the right idea when she was bargaining w/ the Skrulls

Why stop at a fraction, when you can have the whole thing? It would seem the wiser idea to take the everything, when you'll probably go to war with the countries you didn't invade.

But look guys this is pretty simple, do I really need to remind you of the timeless wisdom of Tears for Fears? Villains want to rule the world because everyone does because hey, it's the world, with all these jerk people running around it that it would be totally great to be in charge of.

The only difference between guys like Doomsie and Maggles and like, Bullseye or the Wrecking Crew is the former just happen to have a better-than-average chance of making that happen. Bullseye would love to crown himself King of Everything with a bullet-shaped crown and royal robe made out of guns and just spend the rest of his days launching nuclear missiles until he's shot the entire world to death. But there's no real practical way for him to go about that, so he spends his time shooting human beings and occasionally getting paid for it. In the case of Doctor Doom it's actually a plausibly realistic goal, so that's what he shoots for.

A story, the likes of which I can't remember ever seeing in mainstream comics, at least not either of the big two, that I would like to see is Doom attempting to conquer the world, not through some clever mad scientist/bond villain style scheme, but kicking it old school and raising a Latverian military force to start cycles of conquest and create a Latverian Empire. It might be nice to see a proper war story in the MU that isn't a WWII flashback.

Why risk hurting his fellow country men, he could easily use robots, that is his specialty. In some stories anyway.

That's sort of an exceedingly dumb way for Doom to attempt to conquer the world, though, isn't it?

Although, he did come to rule North America on the Heroes Reborn Earth by basically killing everyone who got in his way single-handed, until he met this chick with either electric or heat powers (can't remember), who becomes his right-hand woman.
