Speaking of which, it seems that some of you are finally coming around to what Quesada and Straczynski are trying to do. We as fans should be satisfied if a character is written out of context for the sake of convenience of plot (well said!!) Why continue to demand that characters we grew up with be written to a certain standard continually? C'mon!! That's just too hard!! These writers have lives too! I say damn the original interpretation of the character (intelligent, charismatic "everyman" with which we all can empathize with) and reduce him to the second-string whiny B-Lister. Whatever it takes to get the story out! Well Done!!!

Finally! A champion for lazy writing, cardboard characters, and plot contrivances! :D

Seriously, just because Spider-Man is considered by other heroes in his world to a B-lister, least of a pain in the ass at best and a menace and worst, doesn't necessarily mean he should be treated like one by the company that, ironically, promotes him as an A-lister.

Well, it would be shorter if it were written well in general. As for the convenience thing- character should ALWAYS supercede plot. Characters as well developed and established as those of Marvel's classic heroes can write themselves at this point. Yet Marvel's editorial staff continue to attempt to shoehorn them into these stories. That's where Marvel has gone wrong over the years, and why they must continue to produce these "events" to inspire sells. Once the event is over, the sales slip. And eventually poeple will tire of these events as well. Were they simply using character development as the inspiration for their stories, this wouldn't happen.

I'm not saying that if they made correct characterization, Civil War wouldn't have happened. But alot of the events would be different.

And speaking of Spidey specifically, such an event would and should challenge him. But challenge him at his best- don't make him an idiot just to further the story along.

As always Dragon, Bravo.

I Love Cap, but he would be squashed by the Juggernaut rather quickly and he wouldn't last an hour with Firelord.

What a Joke.

Like Mr.T says: I Pity Da Foo'... Don't do Drugs! Drink your milk... Stay in Schoo'!!! No way Hannibal, I ain't flyin'! Don't give me no jibba' jabba'! Shut up foo'!

I want spidey to be a god Z-Lister!!! Yay! stupidiy!

Spidey-Fans, you have got to admit, these two have been on quite a role. They took a hyped up, way too powerful for his own good A-lister and return him to the foolish, amateur ability, B-lister we all know he truly is. I mean for the most part, you hear about all the bad these two have done to the character. They supposedly took an every-man character and disenfranchised him from most of his comic book base. Then you hear how they ignored decades of continuity and basically sold out to the countless number of new fans who aren't familiar with the character except for his movie persona. Peter Parker's intelligence has been extremely played down and that Spidey is the whipping boy of the Marvel Universe. My response is "who cares?!!!" He's still one of the most recognizable comic book characters in the world with two successful hit movies. Maybe all that Quesada and Straczynski have done is transformed the character to what he was always meant to be.....a spastic, overly emotional, idiotic dolt of a twenty-something with the ability to receive a beat-down from a girl scout troop on any given day. Everyone knows that Spidey is the “Chandler Bing” of the comic world (we’re talking early “Friends”, before Chandler became cook). My feeling is, if it ain't broke, why fix it? With the sales numbers the comic is receiving nowadays, it's obvious that this is the direction that fans truly want. I mean, not since the days of Doc Samson in the late seventies/early eighties have I seen a character get his butt handed to him on so many occasions. Obviously the recent transformations that Spidey has undergone were actually meant to weaken the character, not make him more powerful (As demonstrated by the butt-kicking he received from Cap in ASM #534). Let's face it folks, possibly Class 20-25 strength, reflexes that are anywhere from 15 to 40 times faster than a normal man (possibly even faster since "The Other"), an enhanced precognitive spider-sense, a costume that provides protection against small arms fire, and ten plus years of fighting experience doesn't mean beans against the pinnacle of human perfection who is a Master of multiple forms of hand-to-hand combat (I wonder who Cap's Sensei was?)

I for one think that these two have finally put Spider-man in the right direction. Well done fellas......Spidey, stay in the B-list crowd where you belong.

Hi there, dumbass.

Sorry. I tried to go without name-calling as long as I could, but your inpeptitude and lack or common sense really leaves me with no other name to call you besides "dumbass". The fact that you seem ot only have 10 posts means that you probably joined this message board just to start some s***. I guess one could also call you a "troll" for that.

Look, you're clearly enjoying the new direection,a nd you feel that everythign Marvel produces is golden....good for you.

However, 3/4 of us who have actually read the classic Spidey stories and know a little more about the character can tell "cheap gimmicks" when we see them. Having every storyline end with a "life-changing moment" isn't "good storytelling". When's the last issue of ASM that had Peter NOT having to deal with some "Shocking Event"? I can't remember. It's been so damn long.

I'm not saying things should be dull, but look at Spidey today, and look at Spidey 4 years ago. They're two totally different people...and the same guy was sriting them both!!!!

You wanna praise people for boosting sale and making htem some money, fine...me, I'd like some quality for a change. We haven't had that inat least 2 years.

Idiot.

I hate it when people ignore the ovious and pretend Joe Q did a good job with Spider-Man.Common sence..

Guys We've gotten way out of hand... We should all stop lying... we all know that Joe Quesada and Joseph Michael Straczynski are making a wonderful job on Spidey... and that we want to make sweet love to them every night... we all love that Peter Parker's Gifted intelligence (4 on Marvel's power rating chart) has decreased to Slow/Impaired (1 on Marvel's power rating chart). We all love the fact that he's now a killer who eats heads and has spikes that come out of his arms to kill... We have to get our heads out of our asses and accept the fact that we are ENVIOUS of Gwen Stacy for Sleeping with Norman Osborn, because we cannot resist his magnetism... That we love that Spider-man has become The Annoying Spider-Dumbass-Tool-god! with Stingers... Peter deserves to get the crap beaten out of him by girl scouts and infants... He should be de-aged to the age of 4... well his mind already is... that way Baby May can beat the crap out of him... because we love a z-lister FLAGSHIP CHARACTER... VuMania is wrong Spidey isn't Chandler from Friends... He's more like Screech from Saved by the Bell... now stop spreading lies about quesada and JMS sucking... and Kevin Smith ALWAYS delivers his comics on time...
Money is more important than a pop culture icon...

Well (and eloquently) said Doc_OCK_4MUGEN. You clearly understand the underlying message to this thread. Innovative dynamic story telling, dedication to the Spider-Man mythos and adherence to Spider-man's mental and physical prowess are things that a true Spider-Man fan isn't interested in. Quesada and Straczynski clearly understand that. In their infinitesimal wisdom they've taken a character that stood as one of the elites in the Marvel Universe, and reduced him to one with the appeal of Howard the Duck. I just want to insure that these two are recognized for the work they have done.

Of course I can't end this reply without giving respect to a fellow member of the message board. Shinlyle was more than intelligent enough to read through every single post in this thread and give a well thought out answer. I mean any moronic cretin (dumbass) could have read the first post, attached it to their reply, and type up a knee jerk response without understanding the overall theme; but not you Shinlyle. You clearly have the mental capacity to recognize true sincerity in a post and reply in kind. Of course I shouldn't expect anything less from someone with 9,924 posts. You are a true example of how true intellect and knowledge of a character can be directly linked to the number of posts an individual has on a message board.

Idiot.

pwned

Shinlyle's gonna feel like an ass when it settles in.

Quesada can be blamed for many mistakes he's made during his time at Marvel, he has done a few good things too. But it wouldn't bother me if Quesada stepped down from EIC at Marvel.

As for JMS run on ASM, I'm still into reading ASM. And really, I think ASM went downhill a little after McFarlane's run on the book. And the 90's weren't very kind to Spidey, of course some would say the same thing is happening to Spidey now.
