Rank Every Theatrical Bat Film from Best to Worst

1. Batman Begins 10/10
2. Batman Returns 9/10
3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 9/10
4. The Dark Knight Rises 9/10
5. The Dark Knight 8/10
6. Batman 89 6/10
7. Batman 66 6/10 (I like this film, it's just a little too long for me and it gets old fast. It's tone is much better suited for TV)
8. Batman Forever 5/10
9. Batman and Robin 3/10

It seems that most people either prefer Batman 89 or The Dark Knight (2008) as their favorite films.

And most people put the 'campier' Batman films last. Interesting, since the more colourful Batman films are much closer to the comic book origins than the more serious films.

I'm not sure I see how the more colorful films are closer to the comics origin. Explain????

The comics have been everything from gothic detective mysteries, to crazy sci-fi adventures, to grim urban noir, to generic superhero action.

1. The Dark Knight (2008) - A truly great film, a landmark and an instant classic.
2. Batman (1989) - A tour de force, a mesmerising arthouse blockbuster.
3. Batman Returns (1992) - Wonderful Kafka-esque nightmare with unforgettable performances.
4. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - A true modern epic, a worthy conclusion to the trilogy.
5. Batman Begins (2005) - A stunning, back-to-basics origin story.
6. Batman Forever (1995) - Pop art meets pop psychology, hugely entertaining.
7. Batman the Movie (1966) - A (too) long episode of the TV show, but the performances and visuals are wonderful.
8. Batman & Robin (1997) - Great sets, costumes and cinematography - shame it has little else to offer.

I'm talking about the comics from the 1940s. They could get pretty campy.

This, for example, from DC Comics #122 (1947):

Something like that would be right at home in either Batman 1960s tv show (actually, it was) or a Schumacher Batman movie.

but that's not comic book origins. The origin only happened in 1939 and was expanded upon through the decades.

Yeah, but look at the very first Batman story, The Case of the Chemical Syndicate - some of that made it into the 1989 Batman movie.

Or maybe the first Joker story, where the Joker announces who he's going to kill beforehand, ala The Dark Knight.

Also, those comics from the 40s you mention are not campy. They are simply bright and colourful stories for children. Campy means doing something over-the-top but with a straight face.

That's because children read comic books. And those children of the 30s and 40s grew up and demanded more adult stuff. Hence, the 70s onwards we get darker and grittier material. Adults can still enjoy it because of the camp factor. A man who dresses up as a bat and fights crime isn't meant to be realistic, and played straight you can see how silly it is. Same thing with a criminal who looks like a clown.
