My review (as I already wrote in the other thread)
(I edited the personal part a bit here so in this thread, the review will be focusing more on the movie)

SUPERMAN (2025) REVIEW

Where do I start?
I have a lot things to say about this movie on my mind but at the same time I have a hard time collecting and choosing the proper words in English (forgive me as English isnt my first language, hehe) but I try to give the best impression as I can.

Lets start with the movie itself...It was a blast from start to finish! It was a tight and relatively face paced movie with a lot to digest especially at the first hour, with the only breather is a brief Daily Planet scene and a brief Smallville moment during the end of 2nd arc. So, yeah I echoed the sentiment from some of reviewer here that the movie has moved fast from one scene to scene. But overall nothing's confusing and overwhelmed about the plot, once we get the whole picture of what's going on, the movie picks up faster and flows better from there.

Simply put, James Gunn's Superman is an unapologetically comicbook and superhero movie that doesn't afraid to go silly and weird as possible. From the characters, the tone, the atmosphere, the actions, the interactions...it was like Gunn has straight up took the pages from All Star, Birthright, For Tomorrow combined to life.

The highlight performances are of course, David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. I actually want David and Rachel to play this parts for so long that I cannot imagine there is a pair in CBM that more likeable and loveable than these two. Their chemistry is absolutely off the chart it is amazing Gunn manage to find this 2 perfect castings.

I, especially love how Gunn handle the relationship between Clark and Lois...it is very fulfilling that finally someone has portrayed Lois as someone more than just a woman who had a high school puppy crush on Superman.
She confronts him, she questions him, hell even at one point, she wants to break up with him. Imo, those traits are what put Rachel a tier above of the rest of Lois' actresses (I heard a lot of praise for the Superman & Lois' Lois but I havent yet to see that show so I can't compare as of now).

Also like his previous GotG trilogy, James Gunn bursting this movie with a lot of heart, emotions, and also humor,..but rest assured for those who are had concerns about Gunn's humor that none of his dirty jokes that previously feared, appeared here. The closest thing of James Gunn-y humor, I think was just a harem thing and a piss, lol

I also want to talk about Justice Society members (ermm..it is Justice Gang in this movie😆) (it is Justice Society because, except for Guy, Hawkgirl and Mr.Terrific are mostly known as JSA in the comics, not JL).
Nathan Fillion is just as expected, acted as Guy Gardner really act and speak from the comics 😁 (seeing him here makes me even more hyped for "Lanterns", really looking forward seeing him interact with Hal and John).
Hawkgirl is just kind of there but she showed some of memorable power display of her own.
But the memorable one is none other than Mr.Terrific! ...His calm presence, with clever use of tech like his T-spheres, made him feel competent and badass. But despite his calmness, he is not some self-serious character, he's uttered some of memorable and funny one liners actually😅
Oh, and seeing the Hall of Justice in its full of glory is glorious!

Now..the action...there are 2 that sticks with me.
First, the Kaijuu battle...
For someone who grew up watching and loving "tokusatsu show", this kaiju battle is everything!!
Knowing that James Gunn is a fan of tokusatsu made me really happy that he's not afraid nor shame to put the silliness of battling a giant monster (which become part of the charm for a lot of tokusatsu show) in a big screen for the whole world to see.
Seriously, my inner child is screamingggg during this scene!😄

And then...Superman vs Raptors squad battle scene.
Seeing that spinning move, and then the camera shows his S emblem before doing a spinning heat ray...OMG!!!🥹 thats the moment where I said to myself : "This is SUPERMAN!!!"
And I was crying at that moment. Really not lie, as someone who is a Marvel fan at heart, I was crying!!

This is the feeling that i will cherish on for the rest of my life, the moment of joy, happy, and wonders when watching a movie (a comic book movie in this case). I feel I havent felt this way in a long time. The last time I ever had this deep emotion feeling was 2012 watching The Avengers, and 2016 watching Civil War. (Endgame didnt impressed me at first because I was disappointed with fat Thor, though I grew to accept and peace with it as time goes). And then MCU phase 4 onward didn't really had the same magic and wonders like it used to be, and the instant talk of CBM fatigue doesnt help either.

So, I am really grateful for this movie, Superman, and James Gunn for reigniting the wonders and the magic that I thought were long gone from this genre. (if anything, i want to believe that this genre has still a lot more to give to us fans)...(sorry for being a little emotional here, haha🥹)

And to wrap this review, I feel it won't be complete if I didn't talk about the man himself, Superman!
Getting personally to know the character especially for the past 4 or 5 years, I can surely and confidently say that Superman is not just a man with powers but a symbol of hope and compassion, and despite his godly powers, he is just as much as human as the rest of us, he has flaws, doubts, worries, fears...but despite all of that, he is not afraid to do the right thing, and standing for something greater.

David Corenswet's Superman is a perfect epitome of that..more so than Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh, (I havent seen Superman and Lois so I can't judge that version but I will surely plan to binge-watching it soon :), oh..and I've never watched Smallville) and dare I say...embodied his traits better than even Christopher Reeves (especially Corenswet's Clark clears the floor against Reeves' Clark ,who was just a caricature and I remember the quote from Kill Bill that Reeves' Clark seems acted that he is mocking humanity).

Put simply...Corenswet radiates charm, earnest, energy, optimism, hope, and most importantly, humanity in 1 movie than any previous Superman/Clark actors combined in all their appearances (well except maybe for Christopher Reeves)

Overall: 10/10

Can't wait to watch it again!

Only 3 showings?

Somebody is slacking. ;) 😁
I'm seeing it again today at 17:00, then tomorrow at 13:30 and 18:00, then Monday at 19:00pm. Then also have plans for next Friday in my home town, and next Saturday in a liemax about 40 mins train ride away where a friend lives.

I'm also personally responsible for 15 people seeing this movie in total.

Does that make up for it? 😂

lol. I read comics every day of my life. And I read Superman probably more than any other character. I consider myself pretty well read on the guy.
My wardrobe consists of no less than 7 Superman shirts.

I always considered myself a pretty huge fan until I meet you guys. Y’all are amazingly next-level. I’m so impressed. And a bit envious. :)

FYI, it made 55 million Friday. Now tracking at 115 to 120 for the 3 day.
EDIT. It's an estimate only, not actuals.

The SnyderCut guy was right!!!!11!! :o

I think there was good and bad in this, I get the desire in tonal shift from the dark and brooding Supes to a more bright, hopeful Superman and in that aspect they nailed it mostly as Corenswet is pitch perfect as both Supes and Clarke (even though we didnt get much of that) and Brosnahan seems a solid Lois and the chemistry really works between them, I just wish we got a lot more of that and just those two and we might have gotten closer to Donners Superman, instead of the Justice League stuff and, yeesh, the Jimmy Olsen stuff which was just plain bad.

I think the overstuffed nature undercut what was otherwise great potential, so perhaps the sequel we will no doubt get will grab me better and the over reliance on comedy in most scenes it did make it feel a little weightless at times, but this is a Gunn film so to be expected and I felt it worked slightly better in the Guardians films.

The action was decent, if a little sparse but I have never seen Superman lose so many fights but at least he was heroic and always wanted to do the right thing even if at times he couldnt seem too. Krypto was obviously a good idea and will win over a lot of fans no doubt and for mostly CGI dog didnt appear too bad.

Overall though I think this was good enough of a new start just not quite the home run I expected it be perhaps this time. The foundations are in place and it seems to be going over well enough and will make the money it needs to carry on with this iteration at least and I can see this being a favourite for those that didnt like MOS style, those fans might not enjoy this tonal shift quite as much, I guess time will tell. 7/10

I've seen it three times.

I had expectations, read some of the leaks, hoped for a lot while knowing having to start a brand + reinvent superman was not an easy task. But I trusted James Gunn.

1st viewing 6.5 / 10 : Liked it, the weaks points were mainly expectations of where I wanted the story to go
and some directing choice.

2nd viewing 7.5 / 10 : Had so much fun, really went fully in, laughed a lot more, took the ride as it was.

3rd viewing 8 / 10 : A blast, pure satire from Gunn, some soft body horror, all characters are full stereotypes with a twist in them. Still some weakness with the script and editing but it didn't matter anymore. It's just bold and takes risk, which is something I appreciate.

Basically, it's a movie that grows I think. It has weakness in terms of some pacing and writing, but it's a great piece of entertainment. I still laugh at that fight in the background while Clark and Lois are talking, it's so weird and new it really establish this universe. Also everyone panicking at the daily bugle while Perry, Lois and Jimmy are working trying to publish their story. All those subtle moments that feels like Gunn's humour is something I really cherish and find quite unique.

And I like that Supergirl is introduce in the movie instead of the PostCredits scenes, it's part of the film with Krypto, even if it was just a cameo it made sense with the story.

It has that Raimi Spider-man vibe. Cheesy, fun with a big heart.

Let's go DC!

just got back, there are lots of positives , there are negatives. Overall though its a fun entertaining movie. And I think that's all it needed to be! So its a win thank god. I give it a 7. Its certainly no ten ! The 2nd hour is better than the first as some have already said. Superman 1978 is still the best superman movie in my opinion. However I think Corenswet is great as superman. I thought Brosnahan stole the show as Lois . Still think Reeve got Superman A bit better . And at that time was having to play 2 different characters. The actors since haven't really have to do that to that extent. So I still think hes the one to look up to so to speak. However just so happy to have a superman movie out there. And a good one!

Back from my second viewing, this time in 3D, and I was able to catch some story and narrative details that I'd missed the first time so it felt more cohesive. I definitely see why the exposition style would turn folks off, but I don't have an issue with most of it. I also see why people think the editing and transitions are jarring, but again...doesn't bother me much.

I enjoyed it more thoroughly this time, some things hit differently, one thing hit me that didn't before. Also, the 3D really enhanced a lot of scenes and I kinda don't want to see it in 2D anymore while it's in theaters.

Most movies I'm good after seeing it twice in theaters. I think the last movie I saw more than twice in theaters was The Force Awakens. I'm gonna watch this movie at least 3 more times. Gosh it feels great to have an awesome Superman movie!!!

I'll see it atleast 4 times overall. After reading this, I think 3-D is the next play :legacy: 🔥

tbh I'm a bit of a sucker for 3D, especially when it's done well like Avatar and Gravity, but I try to save it for rare occasions. Most movies I just watch in 2D. I do think the 3D really enhanced the experience tho, especially in the action sequences and at the Fortress.

I usually hate 3D but I agree it enhances this movie a LOT!

2nd viewing last night was more enjoyable. Even though I feel the first half is a bit sluggish. Even my buddy who went wasn't vibing with the movie at first, came around during the second half. He said he liked it by the time the credits rolled.

I thought it was a good & enjoyable film, it's not a genre redefining film nor do I think this is now the definitive Superman film, but it's a solid platform of which to get the ball rolling for the character in this new DCU.

There's quite a lot happens, quite a lot of characters introduced in what seems like a very short timespan, film feels like it's moving a million miles per hour. Which makes the film quite messy at times if I'm honest, there's that many characters & not enough time to fully flesh them all out to get the audience to really care about any of them.
Which is a shame because the majority of the characters Gunn actually focused on & wanted to make you interested in or care about, you actually do which was something the previous iterations both failed to do well.

The general plot of the film is relatively straight forward & in many ways a sort of classic Superman vs Lex Luthor story. Not that it's a direct copy word for word of anything but it's the sort of story that's been done on the small screen in differing ways on the likes of Smallville & S&L in relatively recent years as well as going further back with L&C & various other animated shows. I'm personally fine with a fairly simplistic story & plot, sometimes writers/directors get lost in themselves trying to make everything unique & different which usually ends up making a hash of the whole thing. I'd almost rather the story was a little undercooked than burnt.

The CGI & action was mostly great, few odd looking shots here & there but nothing crazy. There actually was a flight shot from the trailers which I thought looked appalling, it's not really a spoiler but I'll tag it anyway, it's when he's rushing back to the fortress after the Kaiju battle, anyway that looked a lot better on the big screen than it does sort of out of context in the trailer.

That's pretty much all I can say about the film to keep it spoiler free. It's a good film IMO, there definitely were a lot of positives, but there was a lot of negatives. I'll probably see the film again in the cinema at some point during it's run but my initial feeling was despite any negatives, I did like & enjoy the film overall.

8/10
