LOL!!! Oh, no no no no.

Take it from a hardcore fan of the GLC, no Lantern has name recognition to GenPop except Jordan. Since the JLA 'toon ended (where John's role was unfortunately diminished during the final 2 seasons), John has been invisble outside the comics, as has Kyle. Guy made 2 appearances on the GL 'toon, but that's it for him as well. The GA sheeple probably know more about Kilowog and Sinestro than John, Kyle, or Guy.

There was a trade off for Geoff Johns bringing back the GLC and expanding the Lanternverse. The other titular Lanterns were reduced to Hal Jordan's supporting cast. Since then, the non-print world has gotten Hal, Hal, Hal, Hal, and more Hal.

I have mixed feelings about that as a Kyle fanboy, but I'm also a realist. In the collective mind of DC, Green Lantern = Hal Jordan. To the general population, Green Lantern = Hal Jordan. Come 2014, Jordan will be in yet another heavily-promoted DVD, while the other 3 remain non-entities outside of the comics. Unless WB's decides to do something like introduce one of them on Arrow or Flash (although the rumors suggest Jordan yet again), the concept of the Green Lantern Corps will remain "Hal Jordan and his buddies" to the GA sheeple.

lol Not surprising that one who thinks Hal is a pop culture icon would think like that. Although we agree that they'll probably use Hal again(& they'll pay for that mistake again too), we are far off from JL happening and WB may smarten up in time. JLU still comes on tv in America (unlike Hal's canceled show) on Saturdays and JL & JLU are both always in the most popular category on Netflix. That's staying power. It wouldn't be a surprise that those shows have been seen by more people than Hal's animated movies &Hal gets very little screentime in the animated JL flix. Hal being used in the film isn't set in stone yet. We'll see what happens in a few years

Hulk was there because the non-comic reading audience had a greater sense of recognition with him because of his awful TV series. Moreover, all we've ever seen are variations on the Savage Hulk because that's how GA sheeple know him. The Professor Hulk would have made more sense as an Avenger, but that would have been a risk with so much of the public unaware that Banner has different incarnations of the Hulk inside him.

The same goes for JLA. Kyle and Guy only have a couple of animated guest appearances. John has JL/JLU to his credit, but that's it. People who grew up in the Super Friends era only know Hal. The modern generation has little or no knowledge of John because he hasn't been included in any of the Green Lantern or Justice League DVD releases, has no live-action movie, isn't part of a nationwide marketing campaign, and only had his name mentioned on the recent GL 'toon.

While characters like Wally West, Kyle, and John had moments of brilliance in their respective eras, they have only a fraction of the history and name recognition of Hal and Barry. WB is going to want the biggest guns for the box office melee, which means the Big 5.

John Stewart

In other media

John Stewart is one of the founding members of the Justice League, as seen in the animated series of the same name and its subsequent Justice League Unlimited. He was voiced by Phil LaMarr. His characterization initially differed from the comics version by being a former United States Marine and having not been explicitly revealed to have studied architecture. Since then the comic book version has been updated to reflect these changes. In a development not seen in any other version of the Green Lantern mythos, Stewart's eyes glow green as a side effect of his fifteen years of exposure to the power ring's radiation; the glow fades when the ring runs out energy or if he is physically separated from the ring. Bruce Timm said this was done to give Stewart's face a more visually interesting look, as they decided to stick with the comic book tradition of depicting John Stewart without a mask. By many accounts, the ring is also effective against yellow, contradicting an age-old weakness of the Lantern Corps. This is in continuity with the earlier appearance of Kyle Rayner on Superman: The Animated Series. There have been a few instances in the show of something yellow somehow counteracting the Lantern energy, but he is never explicitly shown to have the same weakness from the comics. Having two main characters with similar names (John and J'onn) can lead to minor confusion (Flash sometimes collectively refers to them as the two Johns); the closed captioning of some episodes misspell John's name as J'onn and vice versa.

In the JL continuity, Stewart begins to develop an intimate relationship with Shayera Hall, and their feelings for each other persist even after the events of the JL triple episode "Starcrossed", and are slowly being rebuilt in the course of the Justice League Unlimited series (even though Stewart has at that time entered a relationship with Vixen), the result of which is their son, the future superhero Warhawk. Stewart maintains much of a soldier's attitude in his personal life, being stern and no-nonsense, which is somewhat offset by his relationship with the Flash, with whom he is very close despite their radically differing personalities. He is also a close friend of former U.S.M.C. comrade Rex Mason. As a humorous facet, Stewart is also revealed to be a strong fan of the classic children's film Old Yeller.

* Phil LaMarr reprised his role of John Stewart in the Static Shock episode "A League of Their Own." He and the Justice League call in Static and Gear in order to help fight Brainiac. In "Fallen Hero," John Stewart ends up attacking Dakota. It turns out that Sinestro orchestrated an event that resulted in Sinestro stealing John Stewart's battery source. Once this was found out, Static helped John Stewart defeat Sinestro and reclaim his battery source.

Note- In a League of thier own, that was a two part episode.

* John Stewart appears in the Young Justice animated series voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson. He appears as a member of the Justice League. In the one-hour pilot episode, "Independence Day", John is shown working with Hal to contain Blockbuster after he has been defeated by Aqualad, Superboy, Robin and Kid Flash as well as carrying the non-flying mentors Aquaman, Batman, and Black Canary. In episode "Alpha Male", John is shown helping to rebuild the Mount Justice after it is attacked by Red Torpedo and Red Inferno. In episode "Failsafe", a mind-training exercise conducted by Martian Manhunter, an illusory John and Hal are apparently vaporized by invading aliens. In episode "Agendas", John and Hal were convenes recruitment for the new Justice League members; he and Hal immediately dismiss the idea of adding Guy Gardner to the League. John is among the Leaguers brainwashed by Vandal Savage in "Usual Suspects" and "Auld Acquaintance". In "Alienated", as a result of his actions, he and several other members of the Justice League are forced to leave Earth and stand trial for hostile actions against alien planets that they committed while under Savage's control.

Film
* In the 2011 live action Green Lantern film, Nick Jones was rumored to have made a cameo appearance as John; however, the movie does not mention Stewart at any point.

Video games

* John Stewart is a featured character in the video game Justice League Heroes, voiced by Michael Jai White.

* Stewart is also featured in Justice League: Injustice for All and Justice League: Chronicles.

* John Stewart appears in DC Universe Online, first voiced by Ken Thomas and now by George Washington III as a non-playable character. In the Hero character storyline he is in Metropolis, investigating a rare phenomenon that has caused both the Green Lantern rings and the Sinestro Corps rings to malfunction. The player will join John in a fight against Sinestro if the player has chosen a Hero, or join Sinestro to defeat John if the player has chosen a Villain. He can, however, be used in the Legends PVP Matches, where players get to use a hero or villain for short 2x2, 4x4, 5x5 or 8x8 matches. While using John, the player uses a Rifle to fight, and uses powers based on hard light constructs, like creating a huge baseball bat to hit enemy players, a green light sphere to protect him from damage, or guns to rain fire on enemy players.

* John Stewart will appear as a downloadable alternate skin for Hal Jordan in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Phil LaMarr reprises his role.

Other appearances

# John Stewart was portrayed by Tim Meadows, wearing his Green Lantern: Mosaic costume, in a Saturday Night Live sketch inspired by the then-recent The Death of Superman comic storyline.

# John Stewart appears (alongside the Green Lantern Corps) in a non-spoken cameo role in the Duck Dodgers episode, "The Green Loontern".

Miscellaneous

* John Stewart has appeared in the Justice League Unlimited spin-off comic book.

Reception

IGN ranked John Stewart as the 55th greatest comic book hero of all time describing him as one of the first dominant African-American heroes in the pages of DC Comics; IGN also stated that John Stewart has gone from "semi-obscurity in the mainstream to absolute recognition" thanks to his starring role in the acclaimed Justice League cartoons.

So it seems john stewart has been shown and even mention outside of just JL/JLU.
He was even at great adventures.

That's hardly putting him into the public consciousness. I didn't mind Razer, but I would have traded him for Kyle, John, or more Guy in a heartbeat.

.

Yet another instance where every Lantern except Hal got the shaft. The movie could have easily shown John as a consultant for Carol or Kyle doing some graphic art work for Ferris Air, but they were pushed aside yet again.

So it seems john stewart has been shown and even mention outside of just JL/JLU.
He was even at great adventures.

The other titular Lanterns have each had minimal exposure to the public. I often compare them to the other versions of the Hulk. For non-comic readers, they might have some concept of "Smart" or "Gray" Hulk, but they would stare at you blankly if you asked them to describe Joe Fixit, The Professor, or the Gravage Hulk. They only know the smashing brute, just like they only know the pilot who got his ring from the alien.

Even the JL cartoon barely touched on John's life outside of the Corps or the comic origins of him getting the ring. I liked the show, but he wasn't developed particularly well. When Kyle appeared on Superman:TAS, they lifted his origin directly from Hal.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying I approve of any of this. I'm glad Hal is everywhere, but I wish there was a little more equality with the other earth Lanterns. I'd love for there to be an animated PG-13 movie with John, Kyle, and Guy, but Hal's getting another round instead.

They didn't really touch on Flash's origin either. They didn't really need to for the show to work. People had been exposed to Hal before then on various shows, but Hal never made a fraction of the impact that John did. Hal was always just some guy. Nothing about him ever set him apart. Excluding him was easy because they knew he wouldn't be missed by many.

WB/DC has lost a LOT of money promoting a GL who simply was never a big hit w/the GA. Hal being everywhere simply isn't paying off. Hal's been around for a looong time & he still ain't that guy. If he was meant to be that guy, he would be by now. It's time to give up, WB

Cool to see John used, but lil' green mask & white gloves is not a good look.

I couldn't disagree more. There was no talk about will or why John was specifically suited to the ring. His life as a solider and an architect were only mentioned in passing. Don't even get me started on the constructs. John was designed in the comics to be an intellectual tactician, yet he could only create things like bubbles and shield on the show? WEAK.

If there is ever another JL 'toon (which would be very useful at this point), I hope the writers understand the abilities of the ring much better, regardless of which Lantern that is used.

Guy Gardner

Television
* Guy Gardner has only been portrayed once in live-action TV. In 1997, Matthew Settle played him in a Keith Giffen-inspired pilot for a proposed TV series Justice League of America with veteran actor David Ogden Stiers (M*A*S*H, The Dead Zone) as J'onn J'onzz. The personification of the character is very much an amalgam of Earth's various Lanterns. His uniform is based on the "sleeveless vest" comics version of Guy Gardner, though he wears a mask and insignia that resemble those of Kyle Rayner's first costume. Further, his appearance and personality more accurately mirror those of Hal Jordan.

* Guy Gardner appears (alongside the Green Lantern Corps) in a non-spoken cameo role in the Duck Dodgers episode, "The Green Loontern".

* Guy Gardner appeared in the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold in the opening of "Day of the Dark Knight!" and was voiced by James Arnold Taylor. His antics caused a prisoner to go on a path of destructive rage, but Batman, already at Corps headquarters, recaptures the prisoner. He reappears in "The Eyes of Despero!" to help Batman overthrow dictator Despero. He, Sinestro, and G'nort create Bat-armor for the job when Batman insists on accompanying the Lanterns. When he sees Sinestro attempting to blow up a rogue Mogo; they do battle, and Guy wins. Guy imprisons Sinestro in his ring at the end of the episode. This episode also pays homage to the iconic scene in the comics, when Batman knocks Gardner out with one punch after an argument. In "Revenge of the Reach!", he initially clashes with Jaime Reyes, believing that he is evil because of the Reach-created suit he wears. After Jaime saves Oa from the attack of other Reach agents, Guy's attitude towards him improves; he even sticks up for him when the Guardians attempt to confiscate his armor. Guy appears in "Death Race to Oblivion!" as one of many heroes and villains racing to save the Earth from destruction at the hands of Mongul. In the teaser for "The Siege of Starro! Part One", Guy is shown fighting off heroes who have fallen under Starro's control, though he is soon put in the same position. In "Darkseid Descending!", Guy Gardner joins the Justice League International. He seems to have a crush on team member Ice, as seen in Time out of Vengeance when they travel back in time to the pre-historic cave man era.

* Guy Gardner makes a cameo appearance in Young Justice. Unlike the other Green Lanterns shown, his costume is quite different from the one he wears in the comics. In "Revelation", he is shown helping Black Canary, Green Arrow and Red Arrow rescue children from the Injustice League's plant creature. In "Agendas", the Flash mentions that Guy Gardner could be a full-time Justice League member. However, John Stewart and Hal Jordan (both full-time League members) immediately dismiss the idea. In season 2, it was mentioned that he is a member of the League and is on a mission.

* Guy Gardner appears in Green Lantern: The Animated Series voiced by Diedrich Bader. He appears as Hal Jordan's replacement while he was away. When Hal returns to his city, Guy helps him save a runaway crane. When Hal is about to talk to the news lady, Guy pushes him out of the way and takes the credit. Guy later finds out Hal was the Lantern before him and invites him to grab a bite. The two eat hot wings on a roof while Hal contacts the Guardians to ask them about Guy. The Guardians inform Hal that Guy is the new Lantern of Earth. When the Guardians see Guy, they invite him to attend a party with them. Guy accepts forcing Hal to hang up. Hal gets furious and the two engage in battle. Their battle starts at Central City and ends in the desert. They stop when they come to a temple full of Manhunters. Hal and Guy fight them off and end up destroying them. Hal contacts Salaak to ask about the Manhunters. Salaak decides to look into it and when he spots Guy, he asks, "Is that Guy Gardner?" But Hal hangs up before he could answer. Then Hal's girlfriend Carol Ferris calls and breaks up with him. Guy comforts him and relates to his situation. The two shake hands and become friends. Then Guy asks if he can ask Carol out which ends up with Hal punching him in the face. Then the Guardians summon Hal to Oa and Guy asks Hal to put in a good word for him. In "Ranx", Guy meets Hal again when he reveals he has been appointed to Honor Guard (his place having been taken by John Stewart) and is led a brigade of Green Lanterns to stop the Manhunters from destroying the planet Ranx, which is containing the still-living head of the Anti-Monitor. In "Dark Matter", he also gets on Kilowog's bad side and helps try to defeat the Aya-Monitor once and for all.

Film

* In the early script for the Green Lantern live-action film, Gardner was set to make a cameo as a football player who was about to be chosen by the ring, before it went to Hal Jordan. The scene was written out in the final draft.

Video games

# Guy Gardner appears as a playable character in Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Videogame voiced by James Arnold Taylor.

# Guy Gardner appears as a boss in DC Universe Online voiced by Joey Hood.

Toys
* Guy Gardner has had several figures in DC's own DC Direct line including three figures of him as a Green Lantern and one as a Red Lantern.

* Guy Gardner was included in the first wave of Mattel's DC Universe Infinite Heroes action figures, as well as in a Green Lantern-based six-pack. A second version, recolored in his non-Green Lantern uniform, appeared in a multi-figure pack based on the Doomsday storyline.

* Guy Gardner was one of five Green Lanterns presented in a DC Universe Classics set that was exclusive to Walmart. The set also included Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Tomar-Re, and Sinestro.

* Guy Gardner has been added to Mattel's DC Retro-Action Super-Heroes line-up that will also include Sinestro, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner, all sold separately.

Miscellaneous
* Guy Gardner appeared in Justice League Unlimited #32.

kyle rayner

150px-Gl2.gif

Kyle Rayner appears in the Superman: The Animated Series episode "In Brightest Day." He was initially voiced by Michael P. Greco. This Kyle Rayner includes character elements of Hal Jordan. Rayner was a newspaper commercial artist for the Daily Planet (and an aspiring comic book artist; in the beginning of the episode he shows Jimmy Olsen a rejection letter from DC Comics as in-joke) when he was chosen by the Lantern ring. The ring had come from Abin Sur, who sent it off with his dying breath (having been shot down to Earth by Sinestro). Mere moments after receiving the ring, Rayner had to fight for his life against Sinestro. With Superman's help, the new Green Lantern defeated Sinestro and took his place amongst the Lantern Corps.

John Stewart was established in Justice League as having been a Lantern for 10–15 years, later explained that Stewart's time as a Lantern before the actual timeframe of Justice League was spent in a different sector than 2814, and that he had very recently returned to Earth. Rayner is first mentioned in the episode "Hearts and Minds" by Katma Tui to John Stewart as she scolds him during his frustration when trying to relearn his Lantern training; saying: "You're as bad as that Rayner kid you sent me to train." Rayner is seen amongst the mourners at Superman's funeral in "Hereafter", and finally returns with a speaking part in the Justice League Unlimited episode "The Return", voiced by Will Friedle. Stewart is still stationed in 2814, and Rayner on Oa, with other Green Lanterns posted there. Additionally, an indirect reference to Kyle is made in the episode "Kid Stuff" in which Superman, Wonder Woman, John Stewart and Batman are transformed into children by Mordred. Using the power of the Green Lanterns, John generates a mask for himself- having required glasses as a child, he creates the mask to compensate for his renewed need for them-, which is identical in design to the one worn by Rayner in the comics.

Film
An alternate version of Kyle Rayner from a parallel Earth appears briefly in the animated film Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, among the underlings of the Crime Syndicate, known as the Made Men. Additionally, instead of being a Green Lantern, he wears a yellow uniform, similar to those worn by the members of the Sinestro Corps.

Comics
Kyle Rayner also made a guest appearance in Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Hitman series, during the "Local Hero" (issues #9 to #12) arc. Kyle arrives at Gotham City to apprehend killer-for-hire Tommy Monaghan, later finding himself involved, along Monaghan, in a struggle against a clandestine government agency dedicated to kill and control metahumans. Although Kyle displays heroic prowess during the events of the arc, he is portrayed mostly in a humorous fashion and he is often humiliated and ridiculed for comic relief.

Books
Kyle Rayner is also featured in the Justice League of America book series by Dennis O'Neil called Hero's Quest, published by Pocket Star Books in 2005. The story takes place outside of both the JLA book series and the mainstream DCU storyline. It retells how Rayner came across the ring, changing the events surrounding it, and the origins of superheroes on Earth. Rather than Hal destroying the Corps, it was instead the Guardians abandoning the Corps to remake the Universe, and Rayner is chosen by Ganthet to be the one to stop them as the new Green Lantern.

Games
Kyle Rayner makes an appearance in Justice League Heroes as an unlockable character.

Kyle Rayner appears in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game DC Universe Online.

The "Emerald Twilight" storyline was to be adapted into a video game for the Super Nintendo by developer Ocean Software. The game would have allowed players to assume the role of Kyle Rayner and take on Hal Jordan. The game was cancelled.

May not have worked as well as you wanted it to, but it worked. People liked it. Would have been awesome if they explored that stuff tho.

I'm a John Stewart fan so I say yes but it probably won't happen but still.

You guys have to remember something, this universe won't be like the comics 100%. One thing I don't like about fans is how they complain about source material. Yea I agree in some terms with source material but in some other forms you need to be creative. You can use source for inspiration by at the same time you should do something new and creative that has yet to be done really.

Not saying replace John with Hal completely but maybe to start off with. Maybe have Hal off in space and John protecting Earth. The DCCU should be influenced by comics but at the same time, do it's own thing and tell it's own new stories and take.

You guys get what I mean?

The DCCU has to establish itself as viable first. The first movie should really draw on some successful comic arcs. They can take chances later.

However, on that note, it seems that DC is willing to tweak things from page-to-screen. Here is a new shot of the GL costume in the upcoming War movie. Maybe the costume for the live-action movie won't be the classic or New 52 after all?

Wanting John Stewart for JL is more than reasonable. But a solo John Stewart film would have to be a completely original story, his stories in the comics suck, Hal and Kyle got all the best stories, obviously those should be the ones who should star in a solo film.

John Stewart should appear in a Green Lantern solo film but he's not a good enough character to carry his own film unless the writers added a LOT to the character.

I think the GL movies should have John and Hal with equal screen time ala Kirk and Spock, or the ensemble cast in Pacific Rim.

That was a hilarious bit. I don't remember it word-for-word, but Flash said something like, "Earth has a third Green Lantern: Guy Gardner."

John and Hal in unison, "No."

Flash, "But we could use.."

John and Hal in unison again, "NO!"

:lmao:

I think the GL movies should have John and Hal with equal screen time ala Kirk and Spock, or the ensemble cast in Pacific Rim.

That would be wonderful, but the only way I see WB using more than 1 GL is if the franchise really takes off. It would be really cool to see a storyline where Jordan loses his mind ala Emerald Twilight and ends up a villain while John or Kyle replace him in the JL.

I have read some good john stewart stories in the past, and what was wrong with his origin story in the comics? It deals with racism etc...

John stewart stories are good,or the ones i read so far in comics, and john is a great character for solo films.

I Thought his origin story was good by the way,but may have to be tweak just like most superhero origins stories for a movie or even a tv series.

I have really no problem with this either.

It could be like sisko and kirk as well if they lived in the same time period.

Anytime you release a film, you're taking a chance. Putting Hal in live action again after his colossal failure IS taking a HUGE chance. Thus far, Hal's proven to be the exact opposite of viable in live action.

Ditto. You sound like a reasonable person

If an original story is best, make an original story. I'd say John's easily good enough. Most of the not so good stories likely came before the post-JLU tweaks made to the character. I haven't heard of any unbiased big names that focused on putting out great stories for John in the comics. Seems more like the company failed to deliver good material for the character. Many of these "good" stories I've heard of for Hal & Kyle seem like the kind the GA wouldn't care about. We've got to remember that what comic book fans like can be vastly different from what the GA likes & WB should be most concerned about putting GA asses in the seats. John's look is simply better for live action than Hal's or Kyle's. The GL concept doesn't seem to be the GA's cup of tea. I think you need a character who can be interesting enough to reel the GA in long enough to get them to care about the GL stuff. A character who doesn't look so goofy & off-putting in costume may help w/that. The things they could focus on w/the marine aspect would make John interesting even without the GL aspect. I don't see anything interesting about Hal or Kyle that screams interesting to the GA.

Great post. Respect the source material when it's best for GA consumption, but never be shackled by it when it's not

The source material should only be changed when it's absolutely necessary. The movies that have strayed from their pulpy origins are the ones that have failed the most. Angering the core fans (comic book reader/SH fans) can destroy a movie before it even has a chance. When adapting something that is already successful in another medium, any changes should be done with the utmost care.
