I don't know what to think of this. I'm excited that he's (possibly) scoring this but at the same time worried b/c he has a very very bad habit ripping off of himself. It's rare these days for him to come up with something I haven't heard from his previous scores. Hopefully Webb pushes him to write something fresh. Something that fits the character and Webb's take on it. I'm willing to give Horner the benefit of the doubt,. Another plus on the score is that it won't be Trent Reznor and the like or some MV/RC composer. Thank the lord.

Yeah, that seems to be the major complaint against him: That he recycles his own stuff ad-nauseum. Funny, 'cause that's what people on this board constantly accuse Elfman of. Should be interesting how this turns out.

I'm pretty much on the same wave length. I'm excited because I've liked much of Horner's work in the past, but want something fresh and inspired. Do you think Webb's background and musical influence will make him more hands-on with the direction of the score? I have a sense that this would be the case.

Nice. Look forward to hearing what he comes up with.

James Horner? I can live with that. I haven't heard a score of his that I didn't like. Doesn't he get accused of stealing from himself more than Elfman?

Most of the ripping he does is the four-note villain motif. I did notice some Casper and Something Wicked This Way Comes reused in his latter film, The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Just wanted to add. It's good that we're finally getting news on a composer for this.

James Horner is a major coup. I hated elfman's score with a passion

Troy and avatar sound very similar but sound totally different to aliens and star trek 2, the latter two movies being among my favorite scores of all time.

I'm interested to see how Horner approaches this. I get the feeling the score won't be balls-to-the-wall big orchestra, the tone of the film feels darker and more scaled down than that. How his music will compliment the "still just a kid" feel of the movie. Either way, it's interesting that they got a huge name composer for this. I was expecting someone smaller like Rob Simonsen and Mychael Danna.

I definately want '80's' Horner rather than '2000's' Horner

Honestly, if you close your eyes...you actually can imagine that in TASM.

lol

KAW will be thrilled...

I can't wait for his reaction comments on this. Since he puts Elfman and Horner in the same ballpark as composers who recycle their own music.

Of course you believe that since you hate Elfman's Spider-man scores "with a passion". This is a neither a step up or down. Just in the middle. There's a few composers (who are just as capable as Horner and more)TPTB could've went with that would deliver a "top notch" score for this. Don't get me wrong that's good they got a respected composer like Horner, who's been writing decent scores for some years now. But "average" scores by Horner tends to be a lot better than the "top notch" scores (which aren't that many of from them) by most of the MV/RC composers.

Dream on.

web may ask horner to step out of his comfort zone. also unless I'm much mistaken this is horner's first venture into the superhero genre, kickass score may open the flood gates for him

I want Horner to succeed but I just got this feeling that he'll deliver an "average" score b/c (imo) his best days seems to be far behind him. Hopefully TPTB let's him be creative. And allow Horner to push himself like he's never done before. As well as let him write an inspiring score for this. Unlikely, but I can dream.

I still think horner has 'got it' I really enjoyed the troy score and the music for the hector vs achilles fight was simple but epic. put it this way, I certainly rate horner higher than elfman.

Has anyone seen this? The background music while Marc Webb talks, sounds like a new track? Or maybe it was in the original trilogy and I just never noticed :(

I asked the same in an other thread a couple of days ago. :oldrazz: It's from The Incredible Hulk.
But I would definitely like something like that in TASM.

Edit: Here is the full track;

Like I said before I'm willing to give Horner the benefit of the doubt. The way the film looks and what people have been describing ASM. There's an opportunity for Horner to write a very mature and inspiring score. Not just a typical superhero score. I hope he (Horner) and TPTB pushes himself in the right direction out and of his comfort zone.

listened to the star trek 2 score today and it is simple incredible. I think that 5 is possibly in my top 5.

Yes it is incredible . The score really elevates that movie to another level. And makes it more epic than it already is. Eventhough it doesn't bother me that much but he used some of the same motifs from STII in his Aliens score (another brilliant score by Horner, of course). Keep in mind that was almost 30 years ago. His approach to scoring has changed. Eventhough Avatar was like a hybrid of 80s and 00s Horner. But I don't know if the score for ASM will call for something like STII and Aliens those are heavily sci-fi. Though this does have Lizard in it. This will probably be more "serious" and less "over the top" than Raimi's (going by the trailer and photos of ASM). I'm trying not to use the words "realistic". It'll be interesting to see how Horner will approach this. Especially in comparison to Elfman's two Spider-man scores.

well I certainly hope horner finally gives spidey a 'theme' as elfman's score was about as generic as you can get.
