The Amazing Spider-Man Rhys Ifans Cast as The Lizard

I agree with quite a few other people so far in that my first thought based on the 'warmth and rage' and 'complex relationship' comments was that Ifans was most likely cast as Dr Connors/Lizard, and it can work appearance-wise as well. And I can see where people are coming from for Electro and, even though I personally don't want to see symbiotes, Venom and Carnage as well.

However, while I hope I and a lot of other people are right because I know I've really wanted to see the Lizard in a film for ages and it's about time, upon re-reading the press release and thinking about past casting/character interpretations, I'm not sure if it's that straightforward -- they could, if they wanted, make any villain have warmth and rage even if they don't have those traits (or at least in a defining way) in the comics (eg. Doc Ock being more sympathetic in Spidey 2, Marko's family backstory in 3), and if you read the 'complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker' again, it looks like Webb was referring to the ENTIRE rogues gallery (he says 'Spider-man's villains', not THE villain) in terms of what sets it apart from other comic heroes, so it could apply to anyone.

So yeah, my money is on his being cast as Connors/Lizard and I hope that's the case, but I'm not going to be surprised at all if he's not, or even if it ends up being a choice that feels out of left field, especially if the film interpretation of whomever could be anything.

Rhys is a wonderfully diverse actor and he could literally play any villain in this film.
I reckon he's gonna be Connors, but we've had some suprise casting decisions so far so there's not point assuming anything just yet.

One thought, he might be the Chameleon as a possible shout out to being the first villain of Spidey in the comics (except for Supercharger)

Why do I have the strangest feeling deep down he's gonna play Venom :S

Though personally Connors is the best choice. I can imagine him as a lot of the lesser big time foes too...

You are the Pope?

Serial killers, to be creepy, are often warm and then turn around and are vicious.

He screams Kassidy to me. It is like seeing Molina was cast and I automatically knew he was Ock.

I hate Carnage btw...I would rather it be the Mole Man or some crap but you cannot deny that he would be a pitch perfect Kassidy. Plus a serial killing super powered villain running around New York is something like we have never seen and certainly aids to the new 'darker' tone.
Kassidy is an evil bastard from the word go, he doesn't hide the fact that he likes to kill people by being WARM.

You all need to stop with the HE/SHE screams a certain character, have you learned nothing from the Emma casting, fanboys are a lot more visual in wanting the actors to look exactly like ink drawings.

I'm not a big symbiote fan myself, but I'd kill to see the dynamics of how Spider-Man takes down a serial killer with super-powers, who writes his name on the walls with body parts.

But I will say something that no fan has ever said before, I like Carnage more than Venom. But it's much too soon for any symbiote character after what they did in SM3. :o

I'll laugh my ass off if he turns out to be the Burglar.

I doubt he will be the burglar lol, you don't give good actors like him such minor roles! Be rational guys.;)

Not to mention he's THE freaking villain, so he most likely is a superpowered villain, not some minor villain who appears for a couple of what? minutes? seconds? Especially if Peter will have flashbacks, through which they will tell us the origin.

I'm betting it's Lizard (I really, really hope so) or Electro. They possibly could have changed Electro's origin and character.

It could be either. I still think this movie will cost more than $80 million. I don't know why they have it that low. This movie is pretty much gaurenteed to make over that anyway.

Me thinking he could be Kassidy is just as ill informed as you saying he isn't.

Hypocrisy much?

Ifans is a very good actor. I can't wait to see who he is.

I like a lot of what the reboot is doing. I like it being Peter and Gwen. I think they made a solid choice on her. I am waiting for who Ifans is playing, but good actor. Garfield I am waiting to see on.

I still wish we were getting SM4, but I do like certain things about te reboot already.

I HIGHLY doubt he's playing Venom. I see him as Doc COnnors.

interesting that alot of people have speculated at Green Goblin(agian)... but, there hasn't been any speculation at the possibility of any of the others Goblins... I could almost see him fitting Ned Leeds/Hobgoblin more over Norm/GG

Hobgoblin comes after the Green Goblin. His entire origin revolves around that fact. I know they played around with it in the 90s animated series, but I don't see them doing it here.

I think by appearance, Ifans looks most like Electro. That would be my guess.

But, I am not so sure they're going for looks matching the character in this one.

If we're going by looks, lol, O I think he'd be a good rip of Smythe from TAS. That's not gonna happen... right? lol

I know it isn't. I do.

What's with all these actors with names that are unpronounceable?

It's pronounceable, you just have to know how to say it. It sounds like Jack Jones but with a WTF instead of an OMG.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but the part that jumps out at me, besides "warmth and rage" is the fact that Webb is directing based off of Vanderbilt's script. We know Lizard has always been a studio favorite, and Malkovich as Vulture was scrapped by the suits. Leads me to believe they went back to Vanderbilt's script of Connors/Lizard. Makes sense with Gwen Stacy.

I think he may be Chameleon; however, I can't get that statement out of my head about warmth, which lead me to believe Lizard. At $80 mil, I find it hard to believe he's Lizard; but, easily see him as Chameleon. :O

I'm just asking this as I've been out of the loop regarding the Spidey films for awhile -- this is probably my first time returning to SHH! after having been a regular poster years ago, actually -- but where did the news about the Lizard being a studio favourite come from? I definitely remember things like his being removed from the 'Spider-man 2' video game, implying they wanted to leave the option open for him to be used in a film, and dropped hints in interviews about it -- but I also read a few articles from before the fourth film was canned saying that Sony was reluctant about using a villain 'without a human face', hence why he kept not appearing? Then again, I don't recall what the source was for that either. But if that's still the studio line, then I wonder if that means Ifans being cast as the Lizard proper is out.

I wish a had a credible link to this article, but I remember one of the producers commenting on their collective reverence to the character and villain, and that his inclusion was long overdue. That was back around '08, and it could have been one of Raimi's peeps, not Sony's. I just think that for them, right now, starting this reboot off necessitates a good introductory story as opposed to what aesthetically makes the coolest-looking villain. I think Ifans can pull off the sympathetic, scholarly professor, as well as the tormented individual. Chances are, we won't see Lizard in all of his glory until the climactic battle anyway. I do think that's their choice.
