The Amazing Spider-Man Rhys Ifans Cast as The Lizard

^If its Kraven Im boycotting. Not really but I wont be happy at ALL.
I'd love to see Connors or Mysterio, even Electro.

I agree with this sentiment, ESPCIALLY after reading the "gun carrying Simon Cowell" WTF!?!?!?!?

And he looks nothing like the Kraven I know. My money is on Max Dillon/Electro or Dr. Connors/Lizard still.

he's venom. betcha.
I remember when sergent brought a script to sony that apparantly blow sony away, it was a two part movie which was essentially peter in high school and ultimate venom ('cancer suit'). sony passed on doing the story right away but you can tell they were hooked by the idea of venom and thus tried to shoehorn him into SM3.

rhys looks like the ultimate venom, it also makes sense that the female lead is gwen as gwen is more prominantely featured in the USM venom storyline than MJ.

There's no way that Ifan's will be playing Craven - absolutely no way. He's too skinny, too "white" and - if you've ever seen him in a movie - you know he hasn't got the most masculine air about him. He's certainly no action star, and certainly doesn't fit the mould of a villain like Craven. I, personally, think he'll be playing Electro. I have a hard time imagining him being chosen for anyone else. I'm picking Electro, with him played somewhat schizophrenically as both a bad-ass and a kind of campy villain.

I know, he's an actor/has range etc. But be completely honest, can you see this man as Kraven?

Except Brock is suppose to be around Peter's age in the Ultimate line. So nope. Try again. :p

Big names aren't everything, Ninja.

True, but it's kind of impossible to picture this guy as any villain. All I remember of his career is "Notting Hill" and "The Replacements." That's it.

I could maybe see him as the old Electro (not the Ultimate one) and Mysterio it's possible to display 'rage' and 'warmth' with that guy. He is able to produce fire and taunt Spidey with his own brand of warmth and theatricality.

I just find this reboot has been going up and down for me a little bit. I like Garfield (didn't before but "Social Network" changed that), I'm happy Emma Stone is in the cast, not happy about the $80 million-budget, and I wish they got a big-name for the villain. I'm sure this guy will do fine, but when you have actors in mind for roles and then they pick someone else--- it's a little hard to say, "Oh yeah... he definitely could play him!"

Oh well... here's hoping Helen Mirren and Albert Finney will be Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Jon Voight, James Garner, or Ed Asner wouldn't be too bad as Uncle Ben either.

I seriously doubt there would be 2 Venom movies in a row.

I reread the article for the budget and it never said 80mil as a whole but it said in the 80 mill RANGE, which could easily range from 80 mill to 150 mill but it could easily end up being bigger since it's not often that the reported budget is the final budget.

I'm not really sure how '$80m range' can translate into 'going up to $150m', but it'll certainly be more than $80m. You simply don't release a summer tentpole for that kind of money.

This has Lizard all over it.

My thoughts exactly. When I googled a picture of him, like a lot of you, I couldn't narrow it down to one character in particular, but once I read the mention of "capacity for warmth and rage" and the connection between Peter Parker and several of Spidey's villains, I was convinced that it would be the Lizard.

I can't recall any performances I've seen from this guy, but reading about his awards and accolades puts my mind at ease, and I appreciate that they're picking guys that are accomplished actors, not just household names. Reminds me of the casting of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, which was a great choice.

Gotta be Connors/Lizard. I've always thought Ifans had enough of a Euro vibe that he had a bit of darker mystery in him, I think that would play well with the obsession with the regeneration and whatnot as a scientist. I always liked the original story that he had lost his arm in war...maybe this could play into his psyche as well. Spectacular Spider-man series had a good run with the Lizard I thought, this could be the same type deal.

If they do do the Lizard I will be so angry that they didn't do the Lizard in Raimi's franchise.

He was the obvious choice villian for SM4 yet we were bombarded with tons of excuses why they can't use the Lizard like

1. He's too scary
2. You can't have a villian who doesn't show his face
3. Too much CGI

Those were just some of the excuses we got so Sam was forced to try and do the Vulture who is an awful villian for a whole film.

Anyway I hope we are getting the Lizard and Electro but as I said I will be pissed for the reason that they could have easily done the Lizard in SM4 and then ended the whole franchise there.

That's your problem, you all keep casting a movie that's not your own. And when they cast someone else you start peeing on yourself like an infant. Stop casting the damn movie, and you'll be alright. Needing the right hair color, eye color, eye brows, feet, arms, legs, boobs, ass and cheekbones seem to be the norm around here. Just once, I'd like for someone to want a great script and wonder what direction the new director has for this film.

Unless they plan on making a Spider-Man movie where the villain has no powers, and Spidey is taking a cab everywhere he goes, it's impossible for the film to have budget of 80M dollars. The director would have to be a directing genius to even try to attempt it (I don't think James Cameron, Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott could do it for 80M). Then again, Raimi had 140M, 200M and 258M and the films still looked mediocre as hell compare to Lord of the Rings (especially SM3, which cost 258M).

I'd actually be more content with a much lower budget, because Sony doesn't know what the hell to do with a huge budget to save their life (minus the one train scene in SM2). We need creativity (knowing when not to use CGI) with practical and stunning visual effects, a great script and great performances over a bunch of cheap looking and expensive CGI by Sony Imageworks.

Sony and 3D doesn't mix. WETA and 3D would give great hope to the new franchise.
