The Amazing Spider-Man Rhys Ifans Cast as The Lizard

I will believe the 80 million "Total" Budget for this film when I see it. I think that was merely an estimate for making the movie, and a low one at that, and did not include advertising, distribution, etc... and was mainly based on savings on what they had to pay the actors/producers/etc.

A guideline, and one that like most others, will probably come in "over".

Sony would be a fool to NOT put the right resources behind the CGI/action scenes for this franchise/movie. They can save money on the human resources (actors/directors) compared to Raimi's.... but put some of that savings into Wowing with the CGI/Action.

If they're planning on not using as much CG for the Spidey scenes, maybe. But for something like this, and especially if the villain is pretty fx heavy, a minimum of 100 million bones is needed.

Liking the choice for the new villain. Like everyone's said, this guy could be anybody, so my guess is just as good as anyone's. From what I've read though, and just by the way he looks, I could see Rhys as either Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Electro, Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard, or to my surprise nobody has mentioned, the actual Burglar that kills Uncle Ben. I know he's not a serious villain, but I mean he's the reason why Peter even became Spiderman, so he's just as good as any other villain.

I reread the article for the budget and it never said 80mil as a whole but it said in the 80 mill RANGE, which could easily range from 80 mill to 150 mill but it could easily end up being bigger since it's not often that the reported budget is the final budget.

Like I posted earlier, I do not buy this 80 million budget (total) til I see it, but an interesting thought, they could do the Lizard and stretch the transformation out so they could use less CGI, saving the CGI for the say final battle with Lizard. Not sure that would be smart, but it could be one way to "stretch your CGI dollars" if needed.

Again, not going to believe that til I see it. And again, IT WOULD be a mistake by Sony to NOT give this reboot and director the resources he needs to deliver the quality we expect, and the franchise deserves.

It would be a BIGGGGG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ mistake in the long run... for a stupid short term gain.

It's odd seeing as how they're casting mostly unknowns for the roles me thinks maybe Sony wants for Andrew Garfield to be the definitive version of Spider-Man just as Christopher Reeve was for Superman.

Or maybe they'll be blowing all that cash in hiring well known actors on some major SFX action sequences.

I wouldn't call Ifans an unknown. In fact, I'd say he's more "known" than Thomas Hayden Church and Alfred Molina - and that's pre-Harry Potter.

I think it's pretty evident that Rhys Ifans is going to play the part of Dr. Connors/The Lizard (too bad Dylan Baker never got the chance to "transform" into Dr. Connors's villainous alter-ego if that's the case) for the following reasons:

1. Dr. Connors/The Lizard fits the "warmth and rage" description of the role Webb talks about.

2. The Lizard, as a character, fits with the rumor that the reboot film will take on a "darker" tone that the previous movies.

3. The Lizard, realistically, is the only other Spider-Man villain aside from the big ones we've previously seen (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom) that has a storyline that can carry for a full movie. Villains like Electro, Chameleon, Mysterio, heck even Kraven the Hunter just wouldn't be big enough to carry a movie on their own. Sam Raimi found this out the hard way when he tried to make Sandman and the Vulture the original villains for Spider-Man 3, and tried to make the Vulture the main villain for Spider-Man 4.

4. Even though Ifans has a lot of film credits to his name, he is, with all due respect, primarily cast in supporting roles and is not a big enough name. Unless he's playing the part of Dr. Connors/Lizard--which means he'll take up just the right amount of actual screen time as "Dr. Connors" while the filmmakers can then use the Lizard as a full CGI character, motion capture, along with a possible voice-over, for 2/3 of the character's screen time.

Never heard of him, but I'm sure he'll do just fine. I wonder who he'll be playing, and I wonder why they didn't tell us straight up. I guess they want fans to speculate.

I remember him from The Replacements and Formula 51..he's a good U.K/British actor; but then again, there are very few bad U.K/British actors imo. Un-like America where any moron who's gotten some publicity ends up being cast in a movie, most British actors are stage trained, or have natural talent i.e Jason Statham.

Will Spider-Man fight reality-show villain Kraven in new film?

Sony announced Monday that the art-house veteran of “The Shipping News,” “Vanity Fair” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” will play the as-yet-unnamed villain and all we can do is speculate. He’s a bit young to play the Vulture and, really, will Sony sign off on using the Green Goblin again after so much on-screen time in the original version of the franchise? They just might, though, considering the announcement of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Anyone who knows the publishing history of that character knows that the Goblin is forever linked to her fate and fame.

I’m betting on Kraven, only because the Brian Michael Bendis version of the imperious character — as an Aussie, gun-toting version of Simon Cowell who travels to New York to hunt the hero — just feels right for a franchise reboot that wants to be very much of the moment culturally and also trying to separate itself from the super-science bad guys of the Sam Raimi trilogy which, at its heart, remained deeply devoted to the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s comics despite the CG budget. With “The Social Network” seizing the imagination of moviegoers and antiheroes in ”Kick-Ass“ and “Wanted” co-opting the lovable-loser origins of Peter Parker, why not throw in a dash of TV’s “Survivor” or the bookshelf’s ”The Hunger Games” to freshen up a title character that, after all, dates back to the Kennedy administration?

That said: Gee, when I look at that photo of Ifan in sunglasses, he’d make a great Mysterio …

Webb’s only offered insight into the casting: “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.” Hmm. Ifans, by the way, will also be seen soon in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One“ in the role of Xenophilius Lovegood.

I pretty much agree with everything said here. I would really dig it if he's doc conners.
