Superman Returns Richard, dumbest fiance in the world?

Maybe, but the trend now-a-days seems to be sympathetic villians in comic movies, if they make Richard a villian, I'd bet money he would be a sympathetic one, obsessed with revenge on the man who destroyed his life...and if thats the case, you gotta admit...he has a point.

Oh I see, yes I agree with your point there. The problem is he can't be too sympathetic because then it's entering slasher movie territory, where the killer has a more sympathetic backstory than the victims and you route for them to die.

Exactly, and that seems to be the territory they are entering.

I mean, even if he is not the supervillian, he is still the villian in the sense that he is a rival to Clark/Superman...an antagonist, if you will. But the way they made him, I really can't see how the audience won't root for the guy.

What I don't get is if the kid is Superman's, then she must have hooked up with and had sex with Richard pretty quickly after Superman left, assuming Richard thinks it is his kid. Can anyone explain this?

Well as far as I know it ok in this movie because Superman and Richard "team up" in the end. So Richard is really a compliment to Superman and can also be looked at as a sidekick character to Superman. Obviously the main antagonist is Lex, so Richard is in a gray area.

Gray area is probably a good description of Richard. But they are walking a very thin line.

I agree it could be costly one way or another. I like it better that he is likeable beacuse the unlikeable boyfriend is such a cliche and no challenge for the emotionally starved Superman they are potraying.

No. Not true. Superman's DNA is vastly different, he may not have powers on Krypton but his DNA is different enough to allow him to gain abilities under the red sun.

Hes an alien. His appearance may be similar to earth men (as are alot of aliens on shows like Star Trek) but his internal chemistry is waaaay different.

I think they should be able to have a kid eventually by the end of the franchaise but they shouldnt be able to have one natually (I dont think theyll be able to have one naturally in the comics either) with the Kryptonian and Human DNA being different.... but a doctor or some scientist will find a way to help combine it.

Actually, we do not know what his DNA is exactlky like, but also, if you truely want to get into how they can be compatible, you have to look at the universe as a whole and how creatures came to evolve like they did.

Essentially, aslong as Kryptonians evolved in the same universe as Earthlings, and they are carbon based life forms who evolved into a humanoid form, it is most likely that their planet and it's life started off very much like ours.

Basically, the only true difference is that they simply evolved on a different planet, but would have still probably gone through, and cae from, the same things as our species and planet.

They simply have been around longer and thus evolved further, and also did so on a planet that did have differences that their bodies would also have developed to be adapted to.

Similar to how humans evolved on different continents, thus having never actually been together, yet they were compatible long before humans actually travelled cross water.

It is like taking the same basic organisms that we all evolved from and placing them on an other planet that can sustain life, and if they evolved to include humanoid species they would likely be compatible with us.

That is assuming our species in several thousand years would still be compatible with use now.

Also, a lot of differences can exist as well and they can still be compatible similar to how different species are too.

see i see it like richard is superman "the human's" antagonist and lex is superman"the god-like hero's" antagonist. i think they are going for a superman assimilation story. like he's been on earth for so long that he considers himself to be one of them even though he is not. richard seems really sharp. he deduced superman's true identity pretty quickly in that clip, but like everyone he thought that this dork (clark) could never be superman. he's not dumb. i think richard thinks that she'll leave leave him because superman, this great love in her life, is back. he probably sees that he himself has all those superman qualities, and that is probably why lois was attracted to him. so maybe he questions whether she really loves him or loves the fact that he reminds her of superman. he knows what's going on, but doesn't really want to bring the whole lois superman relationship out in the open. saying he's dumb is dumb.
